Well Rush is fucking amazing and so are some other prog rock bands, but what passes for modern day prog metal is shit.
But yeah, I'd call it wussy, weak, boring, uninspired, generic, over produced, and mediocre as a whole.
[editline]28th January 2011[/editline]
it's just "bullshit" in song form IMO

Hey, what happened to that band logo you were making? :v:

Yep, seems that way

You're right, but you need to get over it and go and find the good stuff. Many of the musicians pushing the boundries are in extreme metal. Anaal Nathrakh for one.
I think you can call anaal nathrakh progressive. They're pushing the boundaries of black metal, death metal, and grindcore more and more each album. They've even went to incorporate symphonic elements in their last couple albums. And during that time they've actually shifted more to a grindcore sound (even if their main style is definitely black metal)
Mick Henney's a genius musician if you ask me, criminally underrated. His ability to keep one of the most aggressive sounding bands around layered with great melody and rhythm and not having it sounding at all messy takes some fucking skill. And he plays both guitars, the bass and programmes the drums and industrial shit. Dave just does vocals.
Well I say 'just'. He DEFINITELY has one of the most diverse and most recognisable voices in extreme metal.
I never actually understood what the hell extreme metal was, what is it
Mathcore, grindcore, deathcore, often fused with other genres like jazz, synth, electronic and stuff, like for example iwrestledabearonce, Genghis Tron, PsyOpus...
I think most -core genres count as extreme metal, seeing as extreme metal is mostly used to describe very aggressive and fast paced metal
Yeah it's an umbrella term not a genre

"find good stuff"
I love extreme metal
I hate progressive metal
I download new music every day
I'm all set, thanks.

anything good from what you've been downloading? I'm always in need of new music, long as it's not repetitive

Then stop complaining :v:
Core is a Metal dubbed suffix, English translation is "talentless noise"

There are always good bands in each 'shitty' genre.
On the subject of prog, what's Vedicardi's opinion of Nevermore?

It certainly doesn't seem like they play one boring uninspired riff over and over again. 2:30 in and I've heard at least five riffs already. :v:
I also don't see lots of long solos or any 5-minute acoustic sections. In fact, the song is barely even 5 minutes.
Nevermore are going to Bloodstock this year :smug:
One more year of school then I can go travelling to metal festivals. Can't wait.
I'm planning to travel to Hovefestivalen with my friend this summer.
There is usually some good metal there. Last time I went there, The Black Dahlia Murder played, for example.
So far the only metal band that's been confirmed is Kylesa, though. Not really my thing, I think, but maybe they're good live. v:v:v
Fucking Linkin Park is coming too. :argh:
http://www.hovefestivalen.no/english/
Linkin Park should go back to their original style. It's better than their current style.
Then stop complaining :v:
lol I see where you're going but no

that's REALLY not saying much
Their first 2 albums were pretty good

I downloaded a bunch of their stuff but haven't really gotten around to listening to it all.
Vocalist is really good. I really like them already simple from the fact they have two members from Sanctuary.
listening...
Yeah this a lot better than most prog metal, though the choruses are kinda bland. I like it. Gotta listen to the rest of their stuff. You can tell these guys were originally into thrash.
Yeah they seem to have a sort of power-groove-thrash thing going on, cool stuff.
Yeah
the musicians are talented, but they don't understand they're just treading such boring water. They all need to listen to Atheist.
I don't even think there NEEDS to be aggression at all, just some fucking energy. I'd call those vocals just "phoning it in." There's obviously no honest intent behind them other than "sounding good." Wussy is a good way to "describe" it while at the same time not getting the point across at all to anyone that might disagree.
[editline]28th January 2011[/editline]
this is what prog metal should sound like

most prog metal bands just play one riff in 5/4 and somehow that's considered "progressive" It's just boring and done simply to do it, rather than with any musical intent or message or meaning.
I wholeheartedly disagree. Like I've said before progressive music as a genre should be considered an opposition to the mainstream. For truly "bizarre/out-there" music that's more the realm of avant-garde. However, on the discussion of aggression, I think it's wholly unfair to say there's no conviction in any progressive singer's clean vocals. You're clearly expecting prog-thrash mentality to vocals from bands which aren't so, so of course you're going to be disappointed. Sometimes a more relaxed and acerbic approach better suit the songs, but even in terms of fast paced and aggressive sounding prog metal, I genuinely can't think of any (good) bands where that is the case
Bands like Tool and shit which are built around the whole fanbase of worship and intense reflection on Maynard's "deep" lyrics are a huge turn off for me. DT are on the very edge of this, but they're got songs like The Root Of All Evil which are just fucking badass, and like I said I respect them because they're extremely talented.
You can hate on Tool fans all you want, but there most definitely is a truth to what they say. I don't agree with seeing them as prog messiahs for the new age, but the important thing is, they are a truly album oriented prog metal band, with a very strong grasp on the music they produce, they have a lot of interesting ideas, and in a way they brought progressive metal back to the mainstage of modern metal

lol missing the point. I don't have a problem with Tool, or their music and I sure as FUCK don't want another lecture on how ground breaking they are, I've heard it too many times to give a shit anymore.
I just find their easily impressed fans who spout their pseudo psychological bullshit 24/7 a bit wearing. They act like just because they've listened to Lateralus a bunch of times they're at peace with the universe and that they understand the human condition better than a fucking psychiatrist. My best friend is one of them and oh god when he went through his Tool phase I didn't like being around him much.
Don't me wrong, they're not a bad band. I'm just sick of hearing about how amazing they are.
anything good from what you've been downloading? I'm always in need of new music, long as it's not repetitive
My recent downloads have been primarily punk-ish stuff (and a good chunk of anime songs), but...
Amebix - Arise! (A crust punk/thrash fusiony sort of band from '79-'87, very cool)

Aerosmith - Jailbait (From Aerosmith's 1982 album, has some cool rockin' tracks on it. their early career stuff is great)

Acid Bath - What Color Is Death (I think Kyle showed these guys to me. Cool sludge metal)

Laughin' Nose - Get the Glory (One of the most famous japanese punk songs next to linda linda)

Cobra (One of Laughin' Nose's brothers in arms. you gotta be good to name a song "Worst Song")

Hayaino Daisuki - Iri-Kirei (I dunno what to call this. I think it's thrashcore sorta? Female vocals yee)

Fingernails - Crazy For Blowjobs (Funny stuff, classic thrash sounds from italy circa 87)

Morbid Saint - Assassain (I've been listening to them for a while, but the more I listen the better they get)

Riff at 1:12 is the best thing ever
Razor - White Noise (Super-pure thrash. Took me a long time to really get into this stuff)

Agent Steel - Awaken the Swarm (they put out one good record post breakup, here it is)

Gang Green (Crossover Thrash, started as pure hardcore and went this way. Very fun!)

Other stuff I've been sorta listening to:
-The new K-On!! singles (lol anime)
-Creepin' Death - Errare humanum est... (good luck finding this crazy-rare gem)
-The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, other ska punk (about time I got around to it)
-Decide (Still working through their discography)
-Jerry's Kids, Adolescents, other various hardcore bands
-Aion (Japanese thrash)
-Kyuss
is Decide meant to be Deicide
Sweet ass band.
Also Acid Bath own, first sludge metal band iirc

How are melodic vocals pushing any boundaries? Or the bland musicianship in most of their bands? It's not progressive, it's boring. It's fucking mainstream

I wish I had a dollar for everytime I saw the word mainstream posted in the music sub forum
I'd be like Bill Gates, but richer!
