From now on I am gonna call progressive metal intelligent metal, it solves the whole is it progressive or not deal. You know when something is intelligent or not. Still exactly two weeks until Periphery, I don't like waiting.
Drive your car into a tree Controlled coma ftw Warning results may vary from person to person

I go by this rule: My view is the only view if something is subjective until something better comes along.

The continuation of being able to try to understand ourself/others is what makes life worth living" v:v:v Back on topic though. [editline]29th January 2011[/editline] Just listened to a God Is An Astronaut song. Definately getting more.
As much as I hate to admit it, it's well put together and as long as it's not LOL UR WRONG it's quite interesting to read. Again as much as I hate to admit it, it appears most of the time he knows what he's talking about/has a valid point

guys I just had an idea We should create a new kind of music called Spacecore It should be about rockets and shit, and planets. There should be Djent and sweeping in it too, and long post rock like passages before breaking into the next song
that would be amazing like fucking genuinely would o man
Spacecore sounds like a way to describe Gigantic Brain, although that would be closer to Spacegrind :v:
Why has nobody thought of this [editline]30th January 2011[/editline]
Spacecore sounds like a way to describe Gigantic Brain, although that would be closer to Spacegrind :v:
Holy fuck I gotta get some of this [editline]30th January 2011[/editline] wow seriously, I don't know how I thought of that sober, but the more I think about it, the more awesome I think it'd be Spacecore is playing in my head right now, and it's pretty awesome [editline]30th January 2011[/editline] oh and there is power metal riffs and ballads occasionally
Gigantic Brain has calm, spacey synths and then some awesome as fuck grindcore, it's pretty amazing. It's kind of like Genghis Tron, except it's heavier AND more chill.
Seems cool, I'll need to give it a go
It would be like.. Starting off with something like this. Avant garde trippy stuff like this. With some of this stuff mixed in Breaking into this kinda stuff with some of this And things like this Definitely this kind of sounds too NEEDS this If done well this would prooobably be like the best music ever
Simply amazing
I can pretty much +1 on your opinion of prog, that to me is a good example of it, since something like that isn't technicaly doing anything "new" per se, it's looking outwith itself to find elements it can borrow, which to me is just as important anyway. But, I'm talking shit. What do you mean by the part I've left quoted? I can see how power metal would be viewed as progressive in terms of content by someone who doesn't listen to it, but the elements which make it so; technical skill, orchestral elements, high tempos and rather operatic vocals are trademarks of the genre so it's hardly fair to deem them progressive and not countless Dream Theater hacks. That being said prog/power metal is pretty common.
the technical skill, that's pretty much all. the whole point of (standard or "pure") modern power metal (as opposed to early speed/power like manilla road) is to play as fast and as technically as possible, etc. They're always pushing themselves. [editline]29th January 2011[/editline]
From now on I am gonna call progressive metal intelligent metal, it solves the whole is it progressive or not deal. You know when something is intelligent or not. Still exactly two weeks until Periphery, I don't like waiting.
the label "technical" is being used a lot more frequently in place of "prog." I think it fits see: tech death, tech thrash, etc [editline]29th January 2011[/editline]
yeah vedicardi definitely knows his shit. he just doesn't always agree with the popular idea :v:
I do what I can :) thanks guys [editline]29th January 2011[/editline]
His ranting is funny though. Yeah I agree with technical being a better word than prog for the most part. I mean just because you can play in weird time signatures and play really complex things doesn't make you progressive. It just means you're good :v:
No I mean bands that should be properly labeled as prog should be labeled technical, the shitty DT wannabes can keep the prog label, at least in the realm of metal [editline]29th January 2011[/editline] I mean you already saw that happening in 1991 with death metal. For example, atheist, which incorporates many, many, many, prog elements, is "technical death metal" as opposed to "progressive"
first thrash band [editline]29th January 2011[/editline] all female thrash yeeee
But all prog isn't technical, like Devin Townsend, it is definitely prog but not more technical than any other metal really
Better than Black metal imo [editline]29th January 2011[/editline] Did not notice next page :v: And yeah Devin isn't really technical. He is a good example of a real prog musician imo. He encompasses so many genres and draws influence from even more, constantly having a new sound each album, never know what toe expect. He is God. and I'm gonna see him live in March. Maybe some of his omniscience will pass on to me
all female thrash yeeee
You just got me into a new band.
Aren't some of Meanstreak's members married to Dream Theater members :v:
Aren't some of Meanstreak's members married to Dream Theater members :v:
John Petrucci's wife Rena, according to Wikipedia. ...Which actually means they count as a "local" band for me. Hell they play at a bar a couple of towns over from me, and occasionally John joins in when he's not in the studio or on tour. So, looks like I'm going to go see Meanstreak EVERY TIME THEY PLAY after I turn 21, just in the hopes of meeting John Petrucci.
hnng
btw listened to Skinny fists like you suggested was legit as fuck

Avantasia thread went nowhere, surely someone else here likes them.
