Yeah the scene has expanded and I really doubt bands like Behemoth or Cradle of Filth wear corpse paint to take back Norway from Christians

Be that as it may, for as long as guys like En G see black metal as a bunch of guys in corpsepaint it'll be synonymous with the genre, and as it stands today none of the symbolic merit of it has been retained. That doesn't make it bad, but you'd be crazy to think it still carries the same weight and importance as it did 10 years ago. It's purely an image now.

It could just as easily have been a representation of druidism battling against modern England. I'm not saying that's true in the slightest but overall an artist's intention can remain entirely ambiguous.
it doesn't carry the same weight but you can't just make a blanket statement that says "corpsepaint is all about theatrics." It's comparable to saying "all thrash metal uses tunings lower than E"

Not that many thrash metal bands tune lower than E, but that's beside the point. I've simply yet to see any evidence that modern black metal bands who use corpsepaint are doing it because of their beliefs any more.
I've already accepted that it never began as an element of theatricality and if I never carried that over then my bad, but it applies to modern bands.

The only problem I have is with the way you are phrasing your statement. I know modern bands aren't doing it for their beliefs, no shit, but the way you say it makes it seem like it never was.
And pretty much all modern thrash bands tune to at least Eb. Even metallica tunes to D now.

You seem adamant that all original bands did it to begin with and I never challenged that, I was merely saying that you don't know for certain what any of the bands we're discussing actually intended with their image, but it doesn't really matter since I'm playing devil's advocate anyway, I'm just curious as to your sources

Yeah, I haven't really been that into metal in about two or three years (More into Hip Hop and Dubstep these days) but Jagged Visions of My Eternal Destiny is a fucking incredible song.
I've also been listening to S&M by Metallica. That breathes some new life into their old stuff.

i mean I'm just talking about direct quotes that are in the book from the interviews, nothing else. these are verbatim statements made by the guys in the scene, not just the author's analysis

It's a pretty good movie, particularly the part where some of the old guys talk about how they are kind of into techno stuff now hahaha
but it doesn't go too in depth about the church burnings and murders like the book does
There's more than one book, isn't there? And I think there's another documentary about this stuff but apparently it's shit and inaccurate
