Scottish here, got our results a bit over a week ago. So Highers (Or could have been Advanced Highers if I'd done any...) Last year I got an A in English, B in History and B in Computing (Fucked up the exam itself, full marks coursework... Oops) plus a couple of Intermediate 2's which are so worthless it's incredible, unless I'd been going to college I suppose. This year, two fails and a D. Not even worth mentioning what in. I just suck that badly at maths related things. Fortunately still got in to do an MSci in Computer Science at Edinburgh Napier (Heh.) despite them asking for one additional C. Apparently D + F + F = C. I'm a lucky fucker.
Hey, a degree is still a degree if you get it.
Hey, a degree is still a degree if you get it.
Except it's not really anymore. Recently anyone can get a degree in dog handling or McDonalds management.
Got my grades a few months ago so I'm sorted too. iPad sounds nice but atleast I can just fall out of bed and I'll be in the Uni.
Aye, a 5 minute tube journey is a hell of a lot better than last years hour drive through city traffic each way. Have you got any welcome packs or reading lists yet?
Except it's not really anymore. It doesn't really matter what the degree is or if anyone can do it, its about the path you take to get the career you want.
Examinations are utterly pointless metrics of knowledge.
I've developed a skill over the past year of not speculating or thinking about things like this until the last minute so I'm not very worried yet. The big concern for me is whether I got a C in Maths or not. I need it for A-level Physics and Comp Sci later on. To be honest they might let me do physics anyway but it would fuck me off having to retake it for the Comp Sci

People should do what is right for them and obviously that's not necessarily a degree, but I was returning the point of "a degree is a degree" it's not the case. A few decades ago a degree was a ticket into pretty much any job, simply because few people did them and they were seena s a mark of prestige or whatever (I'm not saying this is the right view either) but now it's a case that simply having a degree isn't enough to get a job unfortunately, because a lot of people have them and you need to have other skills/experience to make yourself employable. Even with degrees like engineering that are supposedly "undersubscribed" and how we're lacking in young engineers, the competition for postgrad jobs is still fierce. Also it depedns on what you get, a 3rd class degree isn't going to be of much use to anyone.
Untrue, town planning is an essential part of modern culture.
All I want is my 5 A-C's so I can get into Sixth Form. To be honest, I already have 2 English (Language and Literature) thanks to my coursework (I'm kinda boss at English), I know I have a Science at least, I know I have German, Food, Business and History. Not sure about Maths though, Module 5 was a fucking killer. But I should be good.
It's horrible, I'm in higher maths though it's on the a little too hard for me level, while the foundation class is an insult to intelligence. However my maths teacher has informed a few of us that the linear exam we're having in November is much easier compared to modular and we should be able to get a C easily (I think I only need 32% for a C).
Also it depedns on what you get, a 3rd class degree isn't going to be of much use to anyone.
That depends on who you want to work for. I seriously fucked up my degree, but my current boss didn't seem to mind. I did very well on the C test that he gave me at the interview and he was much more interested in my placement than my exams. If I'd wanted to go and work for Texas Instruments or Boeing I'd probably be screwed. But I prefer the small company way of life at the moment anyway.
Glad I took a BTEC National Diploma, exams suck. Got DDD anyway. (That's equivelant to 3 A grade A levels). Also got my uni course placement confirmation letter today.
anybody else taking Graphics for A levels without taking it for GCSEs? [editline]17th August 2011[/editline] also I got an A* in chemistry after getting Ds in every single chemistry topic test
Aye, a 5 minute tube journey is a hell of a lot better than last years hour drive through city traffic each way. So have you done a course like this before or will this be new for you?
I'm really apprehensive, and the fact my girlfriend is just as apprehensive makes it twice as bad... I need 320 UCAS Tariff points to do Computer Science at City University, London. Anyone else doing something similar? Good luck to everyone!
Lots of people getting worried about AS results and I'm still not. I think I don't want to understand how important it is.
Lots of people getting worried about AS results and I'm still not. I think I don't want to understand how important it is.
That's because it's not that important in the grand scheme of things. Though I suppose that depends on what you are going to university for. If you're going to discover and think, than it doesn't matter. If you're going as the means to an end, to get a degree to get a job in a field, then it matters a great deal more.
Why did I take it upon myself to learn Dwarf Fortress and browse TVTropes whilst doing my AS levels?

The course I dropped out of last year was called Creative Multimedia and it was a foundation. It sounds similar but there's a very heavy web design focus and you don't get the choice of modules. I don't enjoy web design so I thought I'd stop before I ended up going down a path I would ultimately regret. Good thing about CMP and this is reinforced by a graduate I've spoke to is the choice you have in what you want to do! I don't actually have any media or art qualifications, just my own interests and hobbies that I followed and displayed in the interview. What course were you doing at college?
Why did I take it upon myself to learn Dwarf Fortress and browse TVTropes whilst doing my AS levels?
Because awesome things always appear in the most inoppurtune times.
Same reason why I choose to do this course, there was a great sense of freedom coming from it which is why I choose it over Film production.
What course were you doing at college?
Media Practice course, did stuff from animation to radio so pretty similar to the one we're going to do I guess. I look forward to meeting you and working together, should be good fun.
Northern Irish here, don't think it's really hit me yet, though it will in a few hours I imagine. I doubt I'll be sleeping much tonight somehow. Still, I'm reasonably confident, so that's something.
I go in to get my GCSE results on the 25th at 10am, I enroll at the college 3 hours later on the other side of town. Bloody hell that's some bad timing, gonna be a day of rushing around. :v:
Exactly the same as what I'm doing, still haven't planned out what I'm going to do if I don't achieve 5 B's [editline]17th August 2011[/editline]
anybody else taking Graphics for A levels without taking it for GCSEs?
Yeah, they're letting me get away with it as I'm predicted a A* in RM which is sort of simliar
Will you know midnight on UCAS??
No, Ucas start updating at 8 am on Thursday. I've registered with edexcel as all my exams where on them. so i get my results at 6 am. But i cant do anything until ucas start updating stuff.
Yeah, don't bother staying up till midnight, just get a good night's sleep and wake up at 8ish tomorrow to check.
Best of luck to you all, I hope you get what you deserve :)

I only decided what job I want to do when I'm older halfway through the first year of AS so although my subjects are quite beneficial they aren't the first thing that the courses are looking for.
Need A*AA, definitely didn't get the a-star, going to ring Manchester on Thursday to beg.
I need A*AA for manchester too, what course are you going for?
Good luck for tomorrow everyone, I'm shitting it...
If you are a person who comes across well in interview, or have done work experience in or similar to a position that you apply for then that will make it easier to get a job. A levels are just part of a bigger picture.
Good luck everyone, going to try and sleep. Knowing me this will be nigh on impossible. Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit drinking/smoking/sniffing glue/amphetamines.
