pixies is mid 80s
but yeah check out the jam. to me they are kinda like a better version of the clash

idk what the nirvana demos sound like but i imagine they are just early melvins ripoffs?

"sonic youth" is way too broad and again they were around since 82 so???
[editline]23rd January 2013[/editline]
sonic youth and pixies were very ahead of their time so really there's nothing that sounds like them from earlier regardless tbh
hey guys
i'm into late 80s / early 90s rock kind of stuff. specifically sonic youth, nirvana (especially nirvana demos) and the pixies.
but now i'm kind of moving into a early-mid 80s punk kinda thing, and i'm kind of wondering if anyone knows any groups that merge those styles
so yeah, if anyone's got any ideas, shoot, i'd like to get into some new music
You might like bands like Dinosaur Jr, Husker Du, Buzzcocks, Descendents, Meat Puppets, also Japandroids released a pretty good album in that vein only last year. Try out some Wire too. Generally though I think a safe bet for you would be to look up the early SST records catalogue
Anything like this, anything with slap-bass

Not like the one you posted, but still the best slap-bass song.
Anyone reccomend me any music similar to these songs?
Det Haster! by Casiokids: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BSeVFWiZnA
and 22h39/anything by Danger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKS8Jn_3bnA
i'm looking for some powerful sounding electro and indie synth-pop similar to these songs.
Justice's last album had a sorta Daft Punk-y sound. I don't like it, but if you're into DF you'll prob dig it. You should check out their first album too. Not very DF-y but you still might dig it anyways.
Didn't really like Justices new album, already have cross and its much better
I am looking for music like such:

I'm not sure what to call it, and it's the only time Gotye did anything like it.

Thanks! Not quite what I was aiming for, but really close.
What are these genres called? I'd hunt on my own, but none of my friends know.

RYM members say it's "art pop" but that couldn't be more vague. I'll keep an eye out though.
Some kind of jazz pop mixed with electronic is my guess.

Some garage/alternative rock like The White Stripes (and associated acts), Yeah Yeah Yeahs (especially first album), or Blood Red Shoes

Hey, nice, big fan of Gotye too
Have you tried out his other band? He was in a band called the Basics for a while. Not similar in musical style though but a good listen.
It's a difficult one in all honesty, State of the Art is very unique in style.
Could anyone recommend me some music similar to this?

I've been in need of some great funk and soul (especially funk). What are the greatest Stevie Wonder and Bernard Purdie albums? Is there anything else I should listen to?
James Brown man
Also Gil Scott-Heron
I've been in need of some great funk and soul (especially funk). What are the greatest Stevie Wonder albums?
listen to lots of Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Prince, Sly and the Family Stone and Fela Kuti.
as for Stevie Wonder, I'm still undecided. His entire 70s album roster is amazing. Thereafter it's a lot more synth based but I still dig pretty much his entire catalogue (except for "I Just Called")

Where is a good starting point for each of them?

superfly, star time (it's 4 CDs but it's needed), Dirty Mind/Sign of the Times, There's a Riot Goin' On, Roforofo Fight.
i want some good prog similar to porcupine tree
i want some good prog similar to porcupine tree
Not sure I'd say Oceansize are similar to Porcupine Tree but regardless they're awesome modern prog.

No single track can really give you a good idea of their music though, I recommend grabbing the albums Frames and Everyone Into Position if you can.
i want some good prog similar to porcupine tree
Anything on the Kscope and also Steven Wilson's solo stuff, Raven that Refused to Sing is quite Porcupine Tree sounding and is officially released in about a month
First, try Pineapple Thief - they're basically Porcupine Tree if Thom Yorke was the singer, you're bound to enjoy them because its the same if not similar music, this song is one of the harder songs they've done:

Also, Amplifier just released a new album - they're pretty good, more hard rock influence. Look up Octopus or Echo Street
If you're into the metal side of PT try the new Opeth album Heritage, or Damnation, and of course the others if you enjoy death screams which never really happen in PT
Oceansize has been mentioned - they're very good. Riverside is another good one - more on the metal side, I've heard it described as if Tool had a baby with Brian Eno
Also of course, try Floyd if you haven't already - Early PT takes so much inspiration from Floyd that you're bound to enjoy.
Oh, also Airbag

Can anyone give me anything like Frank Ocean or The Weeknd
I need more songs on my playlist, I have about 260 songs and 120 of them are from one band. I've been listening to bands like Pixies and Guided by Voices, I need more rock songs from the 80s-90s.
Sonic Youth
Can anyone give me anything like Frank Ocean or The Weeknd
