You can buy one hell of a cool car with that money..
$300,000 for the sound system alone? I wonder how much the specially designed house cost.
And I thought I spent too much buying my dt990 headphones and a soundcard for my pc. For about $300 (Mind you Sweden has high prices due to glorious taxes) and it sounds fucking amazing compared to the crap I had before. I'm won't be changing for a long time. The stuff this guy has is well.. bullshit at best.
He has a $300000 that plays strictly analog records? How the hell is he not seeing the loss of actual audio fidelity there (As opposed to entirely imperceptible noise from cables)?
for one, he's got an analogue collection, and you can still get vinyl for a lot of current stuff if you look in the right places.
most older audiophiles will tell you that they prefer analogue because digital doesn't feel nearly as full, though most of the time these people will reference the really garbly compressed sounds you used to hear a lot in really old MP3s, or accompanying super low quality youtube vids. Nowadays technology has waaaay better fidelity, but it's still dependent on the system you put the sound out with.

it's an executive home, so we're basically talking a small mansion. dig around here to see what prices can be for existing locations. An architect will have a few un-used designs to show off and suggest. the room itself probably didn't put a dent in the cost of acquiring new plans for a build.
the dude is DEFINITELY loaded if he's throwing 300k down on an audio system with a diamond-tipped record needle and gold plated everythings in an executive home, I don't think it's really a case of "wow he wasted his money and should have spent it elsewhere what a dumbass", so much as "wow please donate a few million to a charity or something this is just exorbitant"
I'd add he probably gets a lot of equipment for free considering he is a reviewer, 6 moon audio from what I understand is one of the big reviewers for this sort of equipment.
lost it when i saw the cable risers

-misread title-
Never new sound had a resolution. Holy crap.
digital sound does, it's measured in bits, not "p" though.
that's why you got 8 bit, 16 bit, 24 bit music. that refers to the resolution and when you hear something like "44khz" or "48khz" it refers to the sampling rate.
[editline]15th March 2013[/editline]
then ya got kbps which is the compression rate.
What is a placebophile?
What is a placebophile?
people that buy $500 cable risers that hold their diamond tipped HDMI cables 3 inches off the ground so their carpet wont add neostatical interwobbles to their sound.
Not really? a compact economic car nowadays is like 15k, usually bought with monthly payments..
Unless you're talking about some used vintage pre 2000'er.
A BMW 7 Series is 93,000 Euro, if he bought that he would have 207,000 Euro left... (Ye euro's, not dollars but still. Why compare 15,000 to 300,000 in the first place)
this costs the same as his audio setup:

wow I'm dumb I thought it was 3k not 300k for some reason, sorry, read too fast.
Anyways yeah, you could buy a fucking house with that.

Man, fuck buying a car. With 300,000 you could design and build one.

And he did, but used it on wrong things.

a play on the people referred to (generally by themselves) as "audiophiles"
taken lightly that would mean people who just like their music and don't like to cut corners in quality
placebophiles are the funniest of them, buying shit like monster cables and stuff for reasons like "the copper molecules are aligned for the warmest twangs" and actually believing they are making a difference (a placebo effect)
[editline]16th March 2013[/editline]
though I guess the term can be applied to dumbasses outside of the audio area

"240p" etc. it's not a unit, but it's an abbreviation for a unit isn't it?
Aw, I was hoping he would put on an Anal Cunt album

Someone should go visit him, listen to something on his speakers then say "I don't know, it sounds kinda muffled compared to my PC-speakers" and record it all.
Obvious bored billionaire just burning money with his toupee along for the ride
"240p" etc. it's not a unit, but it's an abbreviation for a unit isn't it?
"p" means progressive. They use it to differentiate between progressive and interlaced (i) video.
"240p" etc. it's not a unit, but it's an abbreviation for a unit isn't it?
Nah, it just stands for "Progressive Scan" which is a way of transmitting video by drawing all lines of a frame in sequence.

fun fact, you're paying over $1.75 for every letter in that bullshit technobabble description on that page, though if you buy the 12 footer you save yourself 60 cents per letter, what a bargain
nothing boils my blood more than art-statement bullshit padding, saw this earlier today

phone speakers are garbage
why would you want to amplify the shit quality of phone speakers and fill your room with echoy, mono bullshit?
[editline]15th March 2013[/editline]
also why would you even spend 300k on a sound system
with that price you could just pay your favorite bands to play in your living room
Never new sound had a resolution. Holy crap.
obviously he was refering to listening to music on youtube...
great job, videos section!
Feel like some of this stuff is a massive circle jerk.
However that did sound pretty amazing at the end.
Placebo effect at work right there. It didn't sound amazing because it compressed 192 kb/s youtube audio, played through your cheap speakers or earphones.
Hi Facepunch, I didn't know you guys had such an interest in placebophiles, but they're definitely out there in high numbers. It's not just guys like this who have lods o emone.
There's probably even one or two of them on Facepunch. We have a group of audiophiles here, and probably one of the larger concerns for us is when you're actually just getting plain ripped off. Sometimes it's obvious, other times it's not, and you have to look out for a lot of hype on products that influence this balance.
Let me give you a little more of a taste of this sort of stuff...
Okay so, make no mistake, the average person can determine the quality of audio equipment up to a certain point, and then basically the more expensive hardware out there just becomes a matter of personal preference and what you think sounds better. But there's that group out there that doesn't know when to stop. They think audio quality can immediately be associated with the expense of the equipment in question if backed by an audiophile-grade brand name.
The placebophile.
I didn't think people could be that stupid, but it's true. In fact, subcommunities of audiophiles fall into this scene, and if you don't watch your purchases if you've got some extra cash to spare, or you just don't have brains at all, you could end up forking over stupid, ungodly amounts of cash for things as simple as wires.
Those wires you see in that dude's setup probably cost a few thousand dollars; no joke, people will actually pay that much for straight up plain wires if they're marketed right.
In fact, a couple of years ago I got pulled into seeing this from a purchase or two I made for what these cash-strapped folks would consider barely audiophile equipment—the type of quality stuff Facepunchers would buy because they have budgets, but don't want dollar store quality shit. I bought some Grado SR60i's, and frankly, they're definitely some of the best cans I've ever owned, despite not costing hundreds of bucks. But my then-new cans came with a little something special that for whatever reason, without me spending a dollar, I'm still subscribed to to this day.
An issue of Audio Advisor (not the actual issue I first received in the photo below):

Some other Facepunchers here might be getting free issues of it, too, based on stuff they've bought. But yeah, this stuff is completely for real, and it's another one of those idiot honeypot things in life that the average Joe can look at and think, "holy shit, how can these people be so fucking stupid?"
I like a good quality sound system but I don't believe you have to pay anywhere near 300k to get it. Hell one of the best systems I have heard was all parts bought second hand and pieced together. It cost 1k to build and it was amazing.
Ah, glad to hear the pre-amp is broken in. Gotta make sure those output transistors are loosened up so the sine waves don't come out too stiff.
