I think like all Germanic languages have "mare" or "mara" or "mar" or something similar in their word for nightmare. It refers to the demon.
I once woke in in the middle in the night and saw someone staring through my window in my room. My room is on the third floor. He then slowly lowered his head, and had an odd smile. This was a dream, but it scared the shit out of me.
