パンツ it stops cycling at katakana for me
stops at katakana for me too :c
Same, there must be a reverse keybinding somewhere。 Hmm。。。
On IME, when you’re in Hiragana, you can press shift to start your sentence with a capital letter. Once you do, a dotted line appears under everything you write. Then, you can write like normal, although it does look very strange.
Here's the keybindings I know: alt+capslock to cycle from Alphanumeric to Hiragana and stopping at Katakana. Actually meant to go straight to Katakana but for some reason cycles through it. shift+capslock/alt+~ to switch between Alphanumeric and Hiragana. ctrl+capslock to go to Hiragana.
stops at katakana for me too :c
Yeah same, maybe I should have included that detail. When I switch to Japanese the default is romaji, which I loathe. Then hiragan and it stops at katakana. I just hit alt + shift twice (because I am only using English and Japanese). It goes to English the first time, and the second it will go to Japanese/Hiragana by default, no romaji.
Why are the letters so spread out?Is it to make it easier for the Japanese to read?

It would be interesting if it was Japanese spam.
ok how exactly do I pronounce Ra,Ri,Ru,Re, and Ro? I tried several techniques, tried pronouncing them like D's and L's, and the pronunciation seems to vary on a case-by-case basis. Help?

Woo, memorized all of Hiragana, including muddied sounds and the ya,yu,yo, and tsu modifiers in only 4 days. I'm impressed with myself. This is fun.

Forgot all the katakana in the last 2 weeks because I had no time for it (christmas/new year). Luckily I still remember the hiragana.
If you try and really want to learn it, it's really not so difficult.
Some people think the saying "Nothing is impossible if you try hard enough" is too cheesy to be true, but I think that it's true to a degree. I find that all things that I actively try to do/learn I end up getting simply because I want to. I've always loved learning new languages. I think Japanese will be a productive and fun experience for me.
oh shit i forgot about the hiragana modifications anyone got a link for how to learn them? [editline]7th January 2013[/editline] like how 'te' becomes 'de' when you add a ", and fu/hu becomes pu when you add a circle
Aren't you already using memrise?
oh shit i forgot about the hiragana modifications anyone got a link for how to learn them? [editline]7th January 2013[/editline] like how 'te' becomes 'de' when you add a ", and fu/hu becomes pu when you add a circle
" are called tenten and the circles are called maru. Characters such as が(ga) ぎ(gi) ぐ(gu) げ(ge) ご(go) and so forth are called voice to consonants. This is much easier to explain verbally but I will try here. If you make the 'k' sound (like the 'keh' in cake) you will realize that you are not using your voice to produce that sound. Now when you add the tenten you add your voice to the 'k' making 'g' (like 'geh' as in guy). This works for k/g, t/d, s/z. That's how it was taught to me and it helped me memorize it. が ぎ ぐ げ ご ga gi gu ge go ざ じ ず ぜ ぞ za ji* zu ze zo だ ぢ づ で ど da ji* zu* de do ば び ぶ べ ぼ ba bi bu be bo ぱ ぴ ぷ ぺ ぽ pa pi pu pe po * shi"(じ) and chi"(ぢ) will sound like ji. Chi"(ぢ) is not commonly used, but is used in katakna (ヂ,di) to write worlds with a "dee" sound. *tsu"(づ) will sound like zu but this one is not commonly used as well. I've never come across it before.
Aren't you already using memrise?
i haven't used memrise for hiragana, only for the hiragana to katakana
Hi Japanese speakers, This is a copy-paste response going across language threads - we in the Language Learning thread are organizing a public list of facepunchers who want to be made available to practice their native language with someone else, who'd also be learning the language. If anyone wants to be added to the list (Spanish or otherwise) PM me your language(s) of choice. Cheers!
wait are there even japanese people in this thread?
I don't think so. Is there a memrise app for the iphone? I want to start with it too..
They recently revamped the site so they took their app down. [editline]8th January 2013[/editline] Since it uses a different API or someshizzle
How do I know when to use ga and ha like あなたのねこはきれいです。 or あなたのねこがきれいです。 Is there a difference?

I'm almost onto my 3rd month of learning, I can only read basic sentences though, I know learning-times are completely different for everybody but how long was it until you could look at a page of Japanese and understand the majority of what was printed on the page?
I'm almost onto my 3rd month of learning, I can only read basic sentences though, I know learning-times are completely different for everybody but how long was it until you could look at a page of Japanese and understand the majority of what was printed on the page?
That is kind of a general question, and is all based on who is teaching you, how you are being taught, what resources you are using, how often you practice, personal ability and memorization skills... so there is not a definite answer. My guesstimation is at least a couple of years to learn the language at a basic, yet understandable level. This is if you are like OP and you study for a decent amount of time daily. Obviously if you have an actual teacher or the chance to live in Japan, your ability to learn will increase. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C5%8Dy%C5%8D_kanji Here is the list of Jouyou Kanji ("regular use Kanji") that will make a person literate, consisting of 2,136.This allows you to read Newspapers, magazines, and other readings that follow this standard. Not to say all things in Japan only use these Kanji, but if you were needing a target, this might help. Jouyou Kanji are not all Kanji by any stretch; I have read online there are estimated to be 50,000+ Kanji in existence. But no one really knows all 50,000 in their heads, so do not worry. As far as learning Kanji, I say learning radicals first might be your best move. ( http://laits.utexas.edu/japanese/joshu/kanji/kanji_radicals/radicals1.html http://japanese.about.com/library/weekly/aa070101a.htm )
仏 The above character can represent "buddha" "the dead" or "France". What the christ? It's like they're trying to mess with us.
has anyone used the elementary school method of learning Japanese kanji? You start with Japanese grade 1, then progress through the grades like a Japanese boy/girl would do. I'm currently on grade 2, but it's easy to forget kanji.
