If you go to Kyoto visit Kinkaku-ji/Rokuon-ji (golden tempel)

and the Kiyomizu-dera temple

I was there this summer and the Kiyomizu-dera temple was currently being renovated. So I didn't see all of it but it was still amazing.

Also you see all over Kyoto from the big temple.
I know about 20 Hiragana now :) Getting better

If you do go, be sure to try the water. There's some kind of naturally formed fountain at the bottom of a large staircase. Also, the walk to the temple is up a hill, so keep that in mind.

I didn't try too much food, but there's plenty of choice if that's what you're after. Just be prepared to shell out a little dosh, as you might expect it's a bit pricey at some of the shops. Personally I just had some salmon rolls then went down to Starbucks for a breakfast sandwich. It was at night sure, but any time's good for a breakfast sandwich.

Why do you say this?
"Possession is punishable by up to five years in prison. Importing or selling cannabis is punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment and up to 30 million yen"
360 grand and 10 years for selling some to friends!

Don't sell or smoke weed in Japan. It's that simple.

Is this available if you're not in CSU? Also what else would you guys suggest to start out learning the language? I have rosetta stone but something tells me I should use that alone.
stupid baka gaijin here.
So I challenged myself to attempt to learn Japanese today... and I'm actually kinda enjoying it.
Pronunciation wasn't near as hard as I thought it would be.

Don't ignore writing your kana too, it is equally as important as recognizing it.

Probably late and has already been mentioned this but rikaityan is a very useful resource for reading Japanese online on Firefox with all the kanji.

See my OP, it's full of resources; and Rosetta Stone is not one of them.

I'm not in CSU (I live in the UK).
Redoing all the things I've did the past few days... I want to know what I'm doing before I go onto the next level.
This will be a battle of attrition. Onward.
In a few weeks time I think I'll be able to at least pronounce and read an all Hiragana newspaper. Although, I wouldn't understand any of it.
Right now I can put together what I learned so far to write stereotypical Japanese words without reference.
かたな
Owned.
I shouldn't get ahead of myself... Must rest before continuing to the dreaded level 4.

Fuck romaji though. WHO NEEDS THAT SHIT
Out of all the eastern Asian countries, Japan is the most racist towards westerners than any else.
Out of all the eastern Asian countries, Japan has the fastest declining birthrate, a sign that their hideously materialistic culture has largely destroyed of the average young-persons libido there towards other real humans.
Well, hope you liked my post. P.M. me if you have any questions.

Really coming on with the hiragana now.
Almost level 3 on WaniKani, pretty decent kanji learning resource, its been better to me than Anki has been for remembering the Kun and On readings.
When I get done with Textfugu I'll write a review of it, so far its been a pretty excellent resource, but I'm not sure if it has made up for the 120 dollar price tag just yet.

I joined WaniKani, I really like it! It's really easy in the beginning since I have had experience with basic Kanji before. I don't like how I have to name the on'yomi readings because for most of the Kanji I only know the kun'yomi readings. :suicide:
Let's try and keep this topic about language study and potential trips/emigration, rather than whether or not the Japanese are racist, alright?
Can't say I didn't warn him.
I can now read and write all hiragana, gonna start on katakana now
After a few months of intensive studying and giving up and intensive studying again, I can at least understand hiragana and katakana with a grasp of basic grammar. I've been using Japaneseclass.jp and recently started using Anki with some vocab decks which seem to be helping. The hardest part for me is not losing heart, I enjoy learning yet I always feel the desire to procrastinate studying.
Tough part currently is trying to get an understanding of Kanji. The different readings and usage is a bit overwhelming.

Yeah me too! Pretty excited that I actually managed to memorize the entire alphabet in just a few days. I thought people were crazy when they said "You can learn it in an afternoon".
I'm terrified of kanji though.
Alright im a bit confused.
白米 - はくまい- Hakumai - White rice
白猫 - しろねこ- Shironeko - White cat
Wouldn't both be haku since there are no hiragana in between or after each?

Maybe it has to do with Shiro/White being a adjective about Neko/Cat.
I have no clue though.

Ohh that would make sense, I was too focused on the words themselves rather than focusing on the meaning.
