Alright im a bit confused.
白米 - はくまい- Hakumai - White rice
白猫 - しろねこ- Shironeko - White cat
Wouldn't both be haku since there are no hiragana in between or after each?
For 白 'haku' is the on-yomi reading, and 'shiro' or 'shira' is the kun-yomi reading. You just have to know when to use which one.
So 白書 is 'haku-sho' or 'white/blank paper' and 白馬 is 'hakuba' or 'white horse', but 白い船 is 'shiroi-fune' or 'white boat' and 白羽 is 'shira-ha' or 'white feather'.
So there is no particular reason other than "That's the way it is."?

That's one of the parts about learning a language that sucks the most.

I grew up with exceptions to rules, German and Dutch both have more exceptions than rules. I had to learn both.
So I guess got used to it.

Not that I know of, although it may have to do with the origins of the words or their old usages.
So just started learning it,like seriously just started learning this and I have no idea to do.
From what I've read here seems like the first thing to do is to learn hiragana and katakana first.
Any tips on what I should know about those?

Hiragana first, memorise them in easy chunks depending on how easy you can learn languages. Either start in blocks of two or five, it'll become easier as you go along. Use the OP resources too..
Does anybody know how I can properly type in Japanese into a word document? (without character map)
Enable the Japanese IME that comes with windows.
It's under Region and Language->Keyboard Settings in the Windows control panel

There's a website called inputking.com which can type in hiragana, katakana and kanji, I generally use that when writing and just copy/paste it wherever I need it, though I'm not sure about typing straight into a word document.

These are quite fun to write actually.
I highly recommend memrise for learning kana.
Does anyone know of a site where there I can find just pages and pages of just hiragana? I want to practice reading just pure hiragana to get a feel for the characters outside of flash cards.

Start doing some core lessons and actually learning grammar and katakana. Not only that but just reading it without context on when a word begins or ends can affect pronunciation greatly.
Is it weird that I learn more things when I use Google translate?
I just learned that 森 means forest.
By that I mean that it sticks in my head more than just reading a book

漢字(かんじ)は難(むずか)し :( It would help if people added ふりがな

There is a wonderful firefox addon which lets you highlight kanji so you can get the definitions and readings for instantly. Though the lazy mind can become reliant on it.

Also It's 難しい(むずか*しい)
IMEの使いすぎにも注意した方がいい
普段スペースバーを使いすぎたせいで漢字の書き方なんてほぼ忘れた

英語のほうが簡単だもん
sometimes when reading i see things like 「田中」 and the furigana over it says 「アイツ」 or 「真剣」 and the furigana reads 「マジ」
so is the meaning of these words the meaning of the kanji or the meaning of the furigana?
The furigana in that type of case is often a simplified version of the what the kanji is referring to, and / or words that the character themselves would most likely be saying, and the kanji is just there for clarification afaik
Example: A character might say "that guy" but the kanji for "tanaka" might still be there to clarify which "that guy" he's referring to

Do I read kana from right to left or left to right?
Do I read kana from right to left or left to right?
You read everything from left to right.... That's just manga... Unless its a traditional script, read down, and scoot one row to the right, then read down again.

But, you'll only typically see vertical writing on things like new year's cards and some posters.

and newspapers.
Hey how do I make it that when I type something like 'HA' to make a は instead of pressing down on 'F'? I used to do this last time and it might help me regain my ability to read japanese.
I still know some little words and have an idea on their grammar but I don't know how to read for shit. :v:
I think I still have my first grade japanese languages book. Gotta dig that out, might help me even if it was meant for 7 year olds.

Hopefully, I found one where it teaches you how to write but I'm not sure where I kept it.
There we go, the first 46 hiragana done! Plus で and ご.
don't forget ゐ and ゑ
don't forget ゐ and ゑ
Oh god what are those, I don't see them on my hiragana chart.
