As another source for learning, which I believe you can never really have too many sources for learning something, I recommend this program. http://www.humanjapanese.com/home.html This is a good program for entry level/beginner Japanese. Although they are working on an intermediate level. I would explain what it is about, but just download the trial and see for yourself. [editline]1st January 2013[/editline]
Hey how do I make it that when I type something like 'HA' to make a は instead of pressing down on 'F'? I used to do this last time and it might help me regain my ability to read japanese.
In Windows 7 go to control panel>Region and Language>Keyboards and Languages>Change Keyboards. Then add Japanese to the list. Then click on Microsoft IME>Properties. Under the General tab change the input method from Kana input to Romaji input. Kana input only seems useful if you have a Japanese keyboard or if you have the Japanese keyboard layout memorized. You can also set it to have on the fly language switching capabilities. (English and Japanese for myself, using alt+shift.) You can do this by going to Advanced Key Settings (under Text Services and Inputs.) One last note. Under Text Services and Inputs, if you go to the Language Bar tab, you can lock the Language Bar to the task bar. I find mine always switching back to half-width Alphanumeric by default, when hirigana is the input method I intended. If this is not what you are talking about then ignore everything I have said. But I am sure anyone new reading this thread might appreciate this post. [editline]1st January 2013[/editline]
Oh god what are those, I don't see them on my hiragana chart.
ゐ wi and ゑ we I have a Firefox addon that allows me to translate any Kana and Kanji on the fly. It's not perfect, but it is fairly handy!
don't forget ゐ and ゑ
Wi and We are the two most unused Hiragana in the entire set, which is to say almost never. They're in the bin along with Katakana Wi (井) and We (ヱ).
don't worry cyph-chan i got ur back
As soon as I finish the kana, then I will work hard on spellings/vocab/grammar. I'll be better soon! I stayed up until 5am lastnight making sure I memorised everything I had seen so far in my studying. Thanks!
Fuck yeah, I've just finished the whole of Hiragana. Dakuten/combined etc. Katakana next. I heard it's a bitch...
Fuck yeah, I've just finished the whole of Hiragana. Dakuten/combined etc. Katakana next. So and no is easy to just recognize by memory. (also dont forget) ン

Also アand マ has been a real problem for me. Everytime I try to write アダム it always end up as マダム. Adam and Madam. WTF.
はじめまして、シュエンです、どうぞよろしく!
I've been slowly trying to learn this by using that Memrise. Nothing else so far, currently doing it everyday when at work
I've been slowly trying to learn this by using that Memrise. Nothing else so far, currently doing it everyday when at work
Writing out the Kana is a good idea. It allows you to practice stroke order and helps with memorization. I highly recommend anyone learning a new language goes out and purchases a whiteboard.
If you memorise the Kana on nothing but memrise, or similar, you'll think you know them all because you can recognise them and then find that you can't write them down completely from memory without some sort of spoiler. It's best to do it simultaneously. Get the packets of information built up in your short-term memory through Memrise, and then practice writing them down on paper. Try to write down everything you've just learned, without looking. If you get stuck on one, look it up, and then circle then one you found tough. Turn the page, keep writing out what you've done until you can write it all down correctly from memory without cheating. Have breaks, and keep coming back to it to make sure you pack it into your long-term memory (by turning the page and writing it all out again). In psychology this is called 'maintenance rehearsal'. [editline]2nd January 2013[/editline] What is everybody's username on Memrise? I want mempals :v:
Yeah I can't write them for shit. Tell me yours and I'll add you, not posting here.
