OP is kind of unclear. Where should an absolute beginner to East Asian languages begin?
OP is kind of unclear. Where should an absolute beginner to East Asian languages begin?
Learning the alphabet should be the first step for any language. Hiragana > Katakana > Everything else
名: Name; reputation; な 何: What (sort of like 'what do they say');なん (I think)
When you ask for someone's name say 名前 (なまえ).
When you ask for someone's name say 名前 (なまえ).
The お is put in their for politeness purposes. Same thing goes for お寺、お茶、お金。etc.
When you ask for someone's name say 名前 (なまえ).
I know that, but I used only 名 to specify that it is only a nickname/reputation. [editline]2nd January 2013[/editline]
The お is put in their for politeness purposes. Has anyone got a guide on how to type 日本穂 in vidya? The Windows IME keeps switching to Alphanumeric when I try to type in PSO2 or even supported games like CSS
Has anyone got a guide on how to type 日本穂 in vidya? The problem you might be having is your key bindings, check to see if there is any conflicts.
OP is kind of unclear. Where should an absolute beginner to East Asian languages begin?
I know I am not OP, but I have posted (on page 6 of this thread) a link to a very good computer program called Human Japanese. http://www.humanjapanese.com/home.html (Free trial on the site, which includes the first 6 lessons for free. You can also download the trial on the iTunes app store and the Android Market. This program is full of beginner lessons, starting from a very well crafted introduction lesson discussing information on the language and some quick advice/thoughts from the author(s). (Basically telling you not to freakout over the differences because they can be overcome.) Followed by that is a pronunciation lesson. This will help you grasp the way Japanese sounds are made and how they differ from English sounds. The third lesson is where you begin to learn writing, with small sets of hiragana. Breaking it down into groups of 5. This helps you get an individual look at each hiragana character, as opposed to throwing 46+ hiragana at your face all at once. I will stop rambling on about Human Japanese, but I am a huge fan and user of it, and I highly recommend it for anyone who is new to learning Japanese and is trying to find an initial heading. Now if I could get a grasp on my native language then maybe people could understand me.. haha! You are free to find any other sources and sites you want if this program does not suit you. I agree with all of OP's first post and all of his or her methods. I believe that you can never have have too many resources when studying something as in depth as language. I hope you find methods that fit your personality and good look on your studies. I need to stop slacking with mine! [editline]3rd January 2013[/editline]
Has anyone got a guide on how to type 日本穂 in vidya? This allows you to change it from Alphanumeric to hiragana without going through the Control Panel every single time. You can do this if you go to Control Panel>Region and Language>Keyboards and Languages>Change Keyboards. Then click on the Language Bar tab and bubbled in Docked in the taskbar. Also, to make it so you can change it in game, I believe you just go to Control Panel>Region and Language>Keyboards and Languages>Change Keyboards again. This time go to the Advanced Key Settings tab and set a Key Sequence so you can switch between languages on the fly. I think I have done it this way before, but I can't remember if this is the correct solution. Rarely do I ever need to speak in Japanese in game, but I use it on Steam all of the time. Let me know how it works, and good luck! [editline]3rd January 2013[/editline] Random Edit: I just realized OP suggested Namasensei. I have to say that Namasensei is a great man with a lot of knowledge on the Japanese language! And his teaching method is.. well I don't want to spoil it. But go watch now, everyone! xD
I found a pretty cool app on the iPhone that has all the Hirigana and Katakana, along with pronunciation, stroke order, and romanji spellings. There's demo words for each Hirigana and quizzes at the end of each section. I like it a lot already.
Ordering Genki 1 + Workbook tonight :D

I see people typing in Russian all the time so it has to be supported. Plus, no language packs are even needed to read/type JP because it's unicode. Maybe I have to activate the IME when I press the chat button? I dunno.
Maybe I have to activate the IME when I press the chat button? I dunno.
That's usually the case in my experience.
I got Tae Kim's Japanese Grammar book today, should be fairly useful when I feel I've learned more kanji. This thing is fucking huge.
What is the use of Kanji in everyday Japanese conversation/life? How frequently would you encounter kanji as opposed to Hiragana?
All the time. Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji go hand in hand though, so you'll see a mixture of all three.
awww shit hiragana seems easy enough. I already have memorized a bit over half of the hiragana, will probably start on katakana immediately after. If all goes well, I should have both sets memorized within 2-3 weeks. After that, I'm going to start learning words, grammar, sentence structure. Is Japanese grammar confusing (like english) or really straightforward and lax (like russian)
Oh shit, I mistook "gaijin" with "gay" so for a second there I thought that the gay chat was in japanese Japanese is a coo language, though.

http://www.polarcloud.com/ This is what I was talking about in my post on page 6. It can be very handy most of the time, and misleading other times. This mess ups are mostly due to incorrect grammar and slang, which comes with any language. I did a quick Google search and found this, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ee419002(v=vs.85).aspx#overriding_the_default_ime_behavior If you can figure it out, share the know-how with everyone on here please, haha.

[editline]4th January 2013[/editline] Anyhow, can't you just use the keyboard language hotkeys inside of games? I know it works for source games.

In-game, chatbutton, ALT+SHIFT twice to go from English to Danish to Japanese, then type.
I have tested it in CS:GO. I was messing with all of the settings and had no luck. But do not give up lads, keep up the valiant effort!

It does a good job at giving you the English equivalent of the grammar though, which is why it was made.
alt + shift = change language alt + caps lock = change input (Romaji -> Hiragana -> Katakana) Sometimes GMod decides to show Japanese as boxes randomly.
alt + caps lock = change input (Romaji -> Hiragana -> Katakana)
Ahh, finally. Very useful. Been bothering me when I had to do it manually every time.
