Let's Make A Concept Album V3 - The Final Wars (I swear, I will not kill anyone)

You guys should really figure out a musical motive or something to tie the album together, like a lot of legit concept albums do (I know The Wall and The Downward Spiral do this, and it's very effective).
It would really help it remain cohesive, even if it was only in a few songs.
Why is this funny?

every Fper will relate to it
or do one about modern misery and how everyone seems to be sad about something and noone knows what

i like this one a lot actually
finding your niche i guess

The issue with doing a narrative-based and tightly constructed idea is that in this situation there are so many people, its very hard to collude to make it tight, and progress well.
Something similar to the Dark Side of the Moon kind of works better because while its not a narrative, its a collection of songs based around different aspects of the same concept
it's not hard if you have a story set in front of you already. You just pick people to cover certain parts of the story then put it all together in the narrative order established in the book.

it's called a motif
but yes a motif would be very good to have

I'm sorry I rated funny, but everything that Mon, Vedicardi, and you said I already tried to push for in the past 2 threads. And they never caught on.

If you keep it very broad and use classical style motifs (which are based around interval sizes rather than specific notes) I think it could work. If we were doing p. much anything lovecraftian, I think a good motif would be
(Root, descending fifth, then half-step down)
dat TRI-TONE
bitch
Ok, maybe you guys will have more luck. :smith:

ew
no
what do you want to use minor sixths instead or something COME UP WITH SOMETHING BETTER
what do you want to use minor sixths instead or something COME UP WITH SOMETHING BETTER
we should nail down the theme before we write the music imo
that way the music will reflect its subject matter and we won't have a bunch of awesome songs that we don't know what to do with
it was just a general suggestion. WHATEVER
GOD
Anyway, everyone read the whisperer in darkness

That's not a tritone.
The tritone would be a descending fourth then a half-step down. I like where you're going, though.
Maybe you could make the motive be root -> perfect fifth -> perfect fourth.

Works in lots of modes, sounds pretty neutral, but is recognizable, and you can easily switch it up by substituting in the tritone (when shit gets real), inverting it, putting it in 3 or whatever.

i like this one.

you're right
I was thinking just moving to the relative fifth. I always forget while descending from a root it's descending a fourth.
[editline]7th November 2011[/editline]
the nice thing about this motif is you can really move it around. Say you're in B minor, you could play
B -> D -> A -> G# and still establish the motif rather than just playing it based off of tonic.
[editline]7th November 2011[/editline]
root -> perfect fifth -> perfect fourth is the motif used by The Who in Who's Next fyi...
[editline]7th November 2011[/editline]
and root perfect fifth tri-tone is a bit overused. Playing it descending is a bit less played out
[editline]7th November 2011[/editline]
so are people going to read it or not

Dark Side of the Moon is a good example of what i mean - it took the idea of a concept album, and brought it to something everybody can relate to - life
that right there is what helped push the album to the masses
That album is about insanity/madness too.
And I still think we have time to fledge out ideas.
Let me add bullet points.
[editline]7th November 2011[/editline]
there, edited it to Undecided. :v:
I'm curious as of what the deadline will be, genre restrictions and other stuff.
I'm curious as of what the deadline will be, genre restrictions and other stuff.
No deadline, no genre restrictions.
The only thing that matters, is ideas and input. Then at the end we'll make it work.

There needs to be some deadline, otherwise it'll never get released, if we have an agreed deadline then the problems the last one had are less likely.

True, but if we have deadlines, we'll have less input.
I think I'll join, most of my songs have been pretty noisy and insane.
True, but if we have deadlines, we'll have less input.
Not if we set them for a long time away, like after Christmas or something.

no
no it's not
the closest it got to madness was brain damage
please don't tell me you thought that Time was about madness
it wasn't
I think I'll join, most of my songs have been pretty noisy and insane.
How about for the first song, we start with an excerpt from "Call of Cthuthlu"?
Not because it's Cthuthlu, but because many parts of the book have great discussions about sanity.

no. it's about life and death. The Wall is about madness.
i was unable to record my drumming today as i woke up late and am ill. i'll try tomorrow though

we're not going to use that theme
How about we make songs that are about the occupy movement.
lol
I have no idea what is going on right now
