Why are so many unnecessary chemicals put into Cigarettes?

if my dad doesn't smoke, he rages
has nothing to do with being cool
Nicotine to make you addicted, other chemicals for "flavour".
It's one of those things that confuses me. Why people would even want to smoke cigarettes is beyond me, considering it's nothing but a little bit of tobacco covered in chemicals.
Pure concentrated nicotine is very toxic and the amount found in tobacco leaves is low. Tobacco is a plant and plants decay, so preservative chemicals are added. Cigarettes are made by rolling processed tobacco into paper, bleach and other chemicals are used to make the paper and glue (also full of chemicals) is used to keep them from unrolling.
The reason why people smoke cigarettes?
* Encouragement from family and/or friends.
* Influence from popular culture (it looks cool).
* Nicotine is a stimulant that counteracts the effects of fatigue, or "I've been working hard and I'm getting a smoke."
* Method to losing weight as nicotine reduces appetite.
Killing off the stupid people.

That's to do with addiction, which starts with trying to look cool

It actually increases appetite for me, and it's good to smoke one with full stomach, but I can't smoke with empty stomach.
Chemistry isn't as straightforward as it might seem. Even in the natural tobacco, there are hundreds of various chemicals. Then there you have the paper and the filter. All of this is somehow preserved and manipulated using various chemicals and also reacts with each other. Then you burn it and it burns at various temperatures which are present through the body of the cigarette. Also the products of burning of one chemical are then again reacting with the other chemicals.
You get incredible amounts of combined reactions with extremely diverse outcome.
You would be surprised by how many chemicals in for example simple bacon.
If I ever take up smoking, it'll be a pipe. :smug:
Smoking fags isn't my thing.
Maybe a Cigar from time to time.
GUYS. Right now you are breathing in CHEMICALS. And in large quantities they are DEADLY.

they dont give you cancer
Today media says that everything causes cancer so...
they dont give you cancer
Everything gives you cancer. No joke the whole "cancer craze" is stupid. Anything you do in life is apparently giving you cancer.
I don't see how people can try and say that smoking isn't bad for you. Just be honest and admit that you don't care enough to stop.
It's funny how smokers try and make it seem not as bad as it is.
Have you smoked yourself that you know how good/bad it is? You are just affected by media - another example how media affects people, but I am not saying everything is false.

Holy shit, does this mean all crops fertilized with phosphate contain Polonium? :ohdear:
to get you hooked
That's to do with addiction, which starts with trying to look cool
how about curiosity?
I became curious about smoking and tried it.
I like it, and when I sometimes smoke a cigarette, I do it in a place where no one sees me.
That's to do with addiction, which starts with trying to look cool
It's not, I'm someone who doesn't like smoking, or rather doesn't overly want to as it killed my grandfather and probably will my dad too. That said I admit smoking really does relax you, if I get really stressed out I'll have a smoke as it will calm me down in the place of ten minutes, I'm not a habitual smoker though as I generally only have one cigerette a week, less if I can help it.
If you're going to smoke, get organic (local, if possible) tobacco. If it says it's grown locally, ask the clerk what insecticides were sprayed on it and what it was treated with as it was drying. If he can't furnish this information, assume that it is NOT local tobacco. Locally grown tobacco usually comes in large bags so you have to buy a lot, but goes a long way. Avoid the "mint" flavored tobaccos, as they usually contain menthol instead of real peppermint or mint oil. If you want the flavor, add your own mint oil to unflavored tobacco. Use it very sparingly, it's extremely strong and too much of it can actually make the tobacco taste horrible. Mint oil is a natural anesthetic and can help if you have a sore throat, a hurting tooth, or if you've lost your voice. Also, it helps new smokers because it helps relieve some of the coughing they will experience. It will also make the smoke smell more pleasant to those around you.
Once you find quality tobacco, roll your own cigarettes with rice papers or get a pipe. A good pipe goes a long way in making the tobacco taste better. I'm quite fond pipes with bowls made of pecan or cherrywood, myself. If all else fails, go with a corn cob pipe - they are much less expensive but still last a while before needing to be replaced.
Not only will you look like a complete badass, but you will have much less of a chance of getting lung cancer. This is not to say that you are completely not at risk, but avoiding several thousand known carcinogens is definitely a good start.
Also make sure you get a good metal pick, tamper, scooper and reamer (to help clean out the pipe). Some people use paper clips, but paper clips are usually too sharp and will damage your pipe. Additionally, they are sometimes coated in a metallic paint that can be harmful if smoked. I use generic aluminum pipe tools that I get at a local pipe shop. Look for a kit in the $18-22 range to get you started. That will ensure that you get quality equipment that won't break or bend. Also, quality pipe cleaners are a must. Consult with the clerk at a pipe store to find a cleaner best suited for your pipe's stem.
Smoking a pipe can be as expensive as smoking premium cigarettes, but is much less toxic. It is still highly addictive, so approach it with caution.

Those bastards.
Statistically speaking, each cigarette you smoke reduces your lifespan by 11 minutes.

Fucking polonium? holy fuck
I have no respect for smokers. The only ones I do have any respect for is the ones who grew up in a time where it was not known to be any bad for you.
There is no real reason to smoke, other than to look cool, is just incredibly stupid and after that to feed your addiction.
Unless it will result in being high, I'm not going to waste money to BREATH SMOKE.

Nobody cares if some random asshole on the internet doesn't respect them. People smoke because it reduces stress and makes them feel better. People do all kinds of crazy shit to make themselves feel better even though it's known to be harmful. Do you respect people that drink alcohol? It hurts the liver but makes any social occasion instantly more enjoyable. Do you respect people that drive cars? The emissions from cars contain carcinogens but it sure beats the hell out of walking everywhere. Do you respect people that eat heavily processed or fast food? It disrupts the body's natural digestion, but it most of it tastes way better and is cheap.
Yes, some of these things can shorten people's life spans, but it sure makes the life that you do have a hell of a lot more enjoyable. Quality vs Quantity.
EDIT: I smoke a pipe with locally grown preservative-free tobacco. I also eat healthy and exercise 2 or 3 times a week. I guarantee I'll live longer than all the fast food junkies that don't smoke.
It's to make them last longer, and to make them addictive.
My favorite ingredients are cyanide and strychnine.

Smokers can do whatever they want, as long as they aren`t being a dick and puffing smoke into other people`s faces. Like in an elevator or somehing
Anything that is not oxygen is bad for the lung. You're breathing in everything but oxygen once you take a drag from that cig.

No.
It also makes a social occasion instantly less enjoyable, it's fucking disgusting.
As for your entire point: The thing with cigarettes is that it affects everyone around the smoker. I don't care if someone does heroine, at least they're not breathing shit on me. I can't fucking stand it when people have no courtesy, and smoke in a public place(now banned in Michigan it's about GOD DAMNED TIME). I couldn't even enjoy a burger at a restaurant because my throat would star burning, my eyes would itch, and all-in-all: It smells fucking terrible.
My grandfather had a heart-attack due to smoking, and now my father has asthma.
Fuck you. Forgive me if I don't appreciate inhaling poisons. I guess if I ate as many paint chips as you, I might.
I like how smoking is viewed as terrible, yet drinking is socially acceptable. The thing is drinking causes A LOT more problems for the person drinking and everyone around them, but god forbid someone inhales some fucking smoke.
