And to eski, I mentioned nothing about evolution or creationists, lets not do so cause it will be a shitstorm and I'm not in the mood for another.
Right, I'm not interested in a debate on that either just replying to the title of the topic. My point was, its possible because we are hypothesizing about an alien planet. Must have been quite a shitstorm :s
And I'm saying it's not, there are reason we have mammals classed as mammals and not reptiles, their methods of heating and power and metabolism are drastically different, and stuff like fur and feathers were transitional states to birds and mammals from reptiles.
I imagine something very Lovecraftian
that or intelligent bacteria or some shit

ok cool. so you are keeping that this will be constant to whatever planet that life may exist on? You are right but these are our classes, couldn't things be quite different somewhere else for these to change?
cheers

The laws of biology are the same everywhere man just different types of biology may arise, but we can't get a cold blooded (reptile) and warm blooded (mammal) cross because they are fundamentally polar opposites.
Aliens have advanced technologies, that's why they will be made of lasers.

They will be made of directed light you say?
:crossarms:

Yep
The design of the organism would depend entirely on the planet and environment it evolved on. For example... If it evolved on a warm planet with a lot of light it would probably have eyes or some other form of using Photons and you can bet that there's going to be a brain of some sort next to said photosensitive spot. If the planet had high gravity then the organism would be low to the ground and very strong, however if it evolved on a low gravity world it would likely be frail and tall. Diet also is a variable, for example if the alien ate other organisms then you can expect a relatively large mouth with a lot of razor sharp teeth of some sort, however if it ate plants (Or that planets equivalent of plants) then you can expect it to have large dull teeth meant for grinding vegetation.
Yep
Tell me, how exactly they are supposed to be made of light, if they had to develop the technology to be made of light?
And how would they manipulate their environment?
Alien Intelligent life could be smaller than dust mites.
Who's to say they're composed of carbon? could be inorganic material
Scientists do.
There's a reason scientists look for carbon. It has a valence of four, meaning it can make four bonds to other atom. It's the lightest atom that can do that, in fact. This allows for complex molecules. More so, bonds with carbon are formed and broken easily, so molecular reactions are not only possible but readily occur. Carbon is also really common.
Let's take a look at Silicon, another molecule that can make four bonds:

Silicon is a larger atom. It takes less energy to knock electrons off of it.

Long silicon chains are unstable and break apart easily, meaning no lipid facsimiles.

Silicon doesn't bond with as many types of atoms as carbon does

Compared to CO2, a gas, SiO2 is a solid (sand)

Silicon is a less common element

No known silicon based life has been observed here on earth
We have a good idea what life looks like, so it's a good use of our time to look for what we're familiar with.
See this is why it's gonna be carbon based, and that's why we can be fairly sure of how they are gonna be similar to us in some ways such as metabolic processes.
I don't think we have checked the moon yet.

They best look like fucking Turians.
They're the best looking aliens

Lets just get Kurt Russell out of there first, though.
I don't think the Elder Things were THAT bad... They don't steal your body or anything.
Now Yithians, you watch out for them. They steal your mind in an effort to explore your time period with their explorers, whilst interrogating your captive mind in ancient Pnakotus simultaneously.
But at least they let you look at their libraries if you cooperate. Then again they do erase all memories of the place after they switch back your mind with that of the explorer.
They think they're so powerful, chronicling the history of the Earth in all time periods, thinking themselves bloody Time Lords or something...
