One Piece sort of went downhill as soon as it reached Skypeia, which was full of explaining why the telephones were snails and running around accomplishing nothing. It got better afterward, though, when stuff actually started happening again.
I drew a nice picture in third period about how generally all anime characters are drawn. It had crazy hair, scars going across one eye, giant sword, ancient chinese buildings in the background, giant boobs, and a sun on LSD, but that's another story.
Anime usually annoys me, because of the style of the art and the voices - it's just a bit too eccentric and too much for me. I'm not trying to compare it to Western cartoons, mainly because I don't like those either. The thing I do like about anime is that it follows a main storyline and you have to watch every episode in order... it usually intrigues me. Only problem is, the plots are so "out there" and unbelievable and completely ridiculous, it usually loses me and I stop caring. Not to mention most of the stuff I've seen, the characters are all about the same and there's really no development in terms of character. I'm not saying all anime is completely devoid of character development, and again I'm not comparing to Western (actually Western is worse at character development). I'm only disagreeing with the outlandish claims in favor of anime and its characters.
As far as what I've seen, sometime a year or two ago I download a ton of anime to appease my anime-loving girlfriend of the time. I got Hellsing, Code Geass, Death Note, Detective Conan, Elfen Lied, FMA, and Groove Adventure Rave. I watched one episode of Code Geass and couldn't care less about it. Detective Conan only because of nostalgia - I would watch it on Adult Swim at 5am when it used to air. Elfen Lied was good. FMA because I had a DVD of a couple episodes and thought it was pretty cool, but I never got past the first couple episodes. Groove Adventure Rave I never bothered to watch, but I've seen a few episodes on TV and it was funny. Never touched Hellsing or Death Note.
Now that I think about it, the best anime I've seen is probably Duel Masters - that show was hilarious.

as you can see in my avatar im quite the fan of FMA. i just recently picked it up and decided to watch the brotherhood series instead of the original, later i might sit through the whole original but for now im loving brotherhood.
other good animes i would thumbs up... Code Geass. im surprised its not more popular, its really a fantastic anime. sure the character's animation style is different but it makes things very dramatic. confirming that the ending made me tear up a bit.
used to watch naruto and one peice... naruto i realized was crap sometimes around when the fillers started and i skipped ahead to shippuden... one peice went to the shitter when they got completely new english voice cast and i just couldnt watch it. that was around the skypea episodes.
well it was generally all the horrifically over obsessed nerdy teenagers who set me off

..why were you watching the 4kids version? Seriously, why would anyone watch it? The voices for the characters are bad enough but they removed everything good about it and filed the series down to nothing more than a show full of comedy relief characters.

Because (from what I get) japan uses ALOT of unneeded words.
Alot of japanese games also have weird names, and I do believe this is because of the weird amount of words that really do not need/have a good english translation.

Fist of the North Star has to be some of the most pathetic shit ever. It's hilarious though since it is so pathetic.

Anime is just a term for Asian animation, there is loads of animes with loads of different art-styles and storys. I admit though, there is alot of shit ones; just like there is alot of shit western shows.
