People hate anime because all they see is Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, etc. and never Full Metal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo, FLCL, etc. Also anime tends to have cheesy, bad dialogue because of translation issues. And it does tend to really push friendship/love/hope themes. And lots of angsty teenagers. The slapdash character design(preposterously colored/styled hair, gigantic eyes, slim figure) also tends to turn people off who are used to the generic macho protagonist of many American action shows/movies.
That would be boring. It's a brilliant original take on a familiar theme.

I'm going to have to disagree with FMA there, I saw the dub and the first half was fine, but the second half and especially the ending was terrible.

Having WW2 weapons just doesnt make sense, because getting ammo for them anywhere outside US is hard as fuck.
Maybe throught Ebay or similiar, but I don't think the illegal gundealers in japan or china sells ammunition that no-one uses. And also, the recoil of that gun would knock her over the second she pulls the trigger. The gun weights a fucking ton and kicks like a mule when shooting.
This is also one thing that irritates the ever loving shit out of me in anime/manga. Writers usually takes guns that looks cool but never think how fucking stupidly out of place it looks.
