The only Anime that I have ever actually liked was the English dubbed Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series.
Compared to that, pretty much every other anime is crap. In my opinion at least.

I appreciate it, but I think you're missing the point. I don't like The Wire and Generation Kill because they're police procedurals or military stories. I like them because they have brilliant, snappy writing and provide thoughtful insights into different aspects and layers of our society. The cops and tanks and guns and whatnot are a hook that draws attention, but they're not the substance. Focusing on the broad subject matter is the kind of superficiality that I'm talking about seeing in anime culture. That's not meant as a slight or anything, it's just not for me.
Why can't people just watch shit for entertainment? Some people like shit and others don't. it's the same thing with music, and I don't know why people bitch about it.

I don't mind anime really.
From a technical standpoint the animation is usually absolute dross (with some notable exceptions) and most series look like they were churned out by a guy in a darkened basement with a copy of flash. Character design is generally rather repetitive and the scripts and storylines are either completely predictable or utter nonsense. Anime is ultimately on the same level as any other cartoon (though sometimes with adult themes).
However, they are entertaining timewasters and the notable exceptions are exceedingly good.
