when you say western movies I think of Scorsese, Sergio Leone , Francis Ford Coppola, Wes Anderson, Alfred Hitchcock and the Coen brothers. you just try and tell me battleship cutsie pedotits kawaii ^-^ is a better movie than once upon a time in america I fuckin dare you
You wouldn't compare classic American films by some of the directors you listed to American cartoons now, would you? Can you honestly compare something like Raging Bull or Taxi Driver to something like the Simpsons or Futurama? No, you can't.
Anime is the japs revenge for Hiroshima...
Anime is the japs revenge for Hiroshima...
Evil vandalism of two great album covers as an attack on the Americans or a genius reference as a tribute to them... Who knows? The Japs sure as hell won't tell us.
There main issue with most anime is that it tends to end up being convoluted. You're unsure for what age group it's actually intended. There's things that seem to appeal to grown ups and things that seem to appeal to only children. Western animation does this somewhat better I'd guess. They've got far more universal themes that appeal to every for the very same reasons as opposed to the more fragmented approach in anime. The art style is another thing that really hurts it. Even relatively serious ones likes mononoke or paprika just end up suffering from it. It's mainly the lack of definition for the characters and the way asians tend to strongly prefer rounder forms. The whole thing feels more like a kids show than even western kid shows. Just mentioning Disney here, or some things from Hana-Barbara like swat kats or biker mice from mars. Admittedly there's a number of watchable animes which don't suffer from the demented art style as much - ghost in the shell, appleseed to name two. Others are watcheable even with the art style (first season of geas) The vast majority of it is pure stinking dung though. And utterly unwatchable. The only thing from western animation that I've seen that approaches similar levels of horror is captain planet and that's still better than the majority.
I am a fan of some anime, but i would rather watch Futurama or Venture Bros any day. The worst part of anime, and i'm sure the reason why so many people despise it; is the fans. Far too many hyper basment-dwellers out there who truly believe that they are some martial art god because they have watched 500 episodes of FIGHTY NINJAS and bought a katana from ebay. Obviously i know not everyone who enjoys anime is like this, but it works in the same way gaming does with hardcore mouth-breather fanboys. People relate gaming to these people because they are always the ones shouting loudest and longest. Some people take anime way too seriously and make their lives revolve around it. The sort of people who feel compelled to put a '-_-' or '>_>' face at the end of every drivelling ballbag post they make. serious post all up in your faces
The wonderful world of geeky obsession.
Oh really? Because I think I missed that Disney movie about the fallen prince trying to make peace between an unstoppable war machine Pocahontas and an ancient and stubborn army trying to blindly bulldoze it's way over something it can't defeat Mulan . Maybe it came out between that movie about the princess wanting more out of life and that other princess wanting more out of life.
[editline]12:05AM[/editline]
Only weird people go to anime conventions. It's common sense to stay the fuck away from such events. Making events at all over anime is just... ugh...
There are a lot of hot girls dressing up at conventions you just have to look past all of the eye bleeding and ugly you'll encounter along the way. [editline]12:10AM[/editline] Miyazaki's movies haven't been around for as long as you think tbh spirited away was in 2001 infact
that's like telling a fundamentalist christian to surf /b/, because eventually he'll find something that suits him
nah actually I found it pretty easy to find hot girls but you have to look at their faces first. but then it was a relatively small convention and stuff.

Actually remembering Haruhi I thought it was a great show but I'm still not giving my opinion since I haven't seen it in a very long time(not counting second season which wasn't as good as the first anyways)

But if I actually think that NOW is hard to say, and I doubt it.
Those that are drawn realistically are cool. But the generic ones are annoying as fuck.

Question to the Anime lovers.. I've liked a very select few animes, since most just doesn't appeal to me. Regardless if I'm part asian. :v: I can't remember the names though. Theres one with this green alien guy with a yellow cap and star on it. Then theres this fucking amazing one about this girl who gets lost in some fantasy world of monsters and theres this black blob guy and he's all creepy with a mask on his face and he turns evil and stuff. I seriously fucking loved that movie. I can't remember the names though. :(

I haven't the slightest idea of the first one, though.
Other favorites of mine are Naruto and One Piece
Everyone hates it because of shitty shows like Naruto, One Piece, FLCL, Boondocks, and all that other happy horseshit. I can only watch three series. Namely Ghost in the Shell, Ergo Proxy, and Claymore.(All of which include no holds barred action, blood, and dark/serious undertones with a sole focus on storytelling elements.). 95% of anime is absolutely terrible over the top kiddy bullshit. So I agree with most people when they say they hate it, Just don't get the good shit mixed up with 95% of the terrible shit like I used to. Example. Ergo Proxy has a fucking awesome art style that strays away from the stupid shit. Or Ghost in the Shell, an absolute classic for anyone who enjoys scifi/cyberpunk stuff, even if you watch just the series or the older movies too. Rate agree if you agree that some series are good/great but most (80%-90% or so) are terrible.

Brb Pokémon. :P
Oh yes, because gritty goth is such an improvement and not stereotypical at all. Brb Pokémon. :P
I don't think he's talking about the goth part I think he's talking about the somewhat realistic part
When my post directly precedes yours you don't have to quote it you know. Yeah I do like realistic style too, but I wouldn't call it abnormal, and the "gritty" and "goth" parts are as much a part of the style as the "realistic" part.
Everyone hates it because of shitty shows like Naruto, One Piece, FLCL, Boondocks, and all that other happy horseshit.
Just keep Naruto in there. Not FLCL and the Boondocks. One Piece is a okay show, however shitty with 4kids.

You know what....I just can't stand the voices.........THEY ALL SOUND THE F***ING SAME
Well there does seem to be a lot of the same actors doing a lot of stuff over there, but is it really any different from say Tom Cruise being at least 35 different action heroes?
