I had never seen any anime until some friends showed me Hellsing (especially the OVA series) and Gurren Lagann. Sweet fuck, they were some of the most awesome shit I've ever seen.
Still can't say much for most anime, but I wasn't a fan of DBZ, Naruto, One Piece... they were too much bullshit drama, didn't go anywhere, and even if they did they took WAY too long to do it.

I used to think all anime was horrible, even though i used to watch things like pokemon and gundam as a kid and loved them. Decided to actually watch some, and was completely wrong. Gurren Lagann was AMAZING.

I haven't seen it myself, but I've never looked at it as a show that could be good.
Most people recommend to watch Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood if you're going to watch it since FMA just derailed into it's own bad story to put an end to the show.

You should check out Aoi Bungaku. Several stories adapted from actual books. No light novels, manga, visual novels or original crap.

Or Ghost in the Shell, an absolute classic for anyone who enjoys scifi/cyberpunk stuff, even if you watch just the series or the older movies too.

Boondocks by my definition is anime, even if it is a shitty American made anime. I enjoyed the Claymore anime but the ending was quite terrible, I prefered the way the manga carried on but i just wish it would finally end though.
Sorry if my post before came off as "holier than thou" I just very much dislike colorful/hyper animes.

True, but the series is also plagued with near-Evangelion levels of "What the fuck am I watching?!" which is why I stopped... that and I missed an episode or two and was completely lost.
I hate anime because at this point in time, none of them have original ideas, and are just copying each other.

Occasionally something actually good is speweed out whilst in general it's the same shit being spewed out all the time just in a slightly different setting.

We refer to anime as eastern animation since the difference between western and eastern animation differs in everything (story, music, artstyle, targeted audience, etc etc). And anime is the name they have for their animated cartoons.
Technically western and eastern animation is anime.
But we have defined eastern cartoons (specifically Japanese) as anime and western cartoons as cartoons.

Uh...
That's nothing like the shows I watch.
The only thing that does cover a good bunch of it would be schoolgirls.
I don't like regular anime because of it's way of showing off emotions (when characters are extremely simple drawn and shake in strange ways).
But I like the ones that are more serious like Death Note - I watched it till the last episode and never regretted.
