My school has gone to the shit since our normal Head got a secondment to go off to some prestigious school for a year. Since then:
-Every time a person misbehaves in class, the teacher puts us all in detention (and my class are dickheads so I don't have many lunch breaks)
-The teachers are no longer allowed to GIVE US OUR GRADES. Yes, you read that right. From the school newsletter:
"A conclusive study has shown that children are de-motivated by knowing their level of attainment" - right, so if I did well I get no recognition. If I did shit, I think too much of myself. The teachers are pretty pissed off at being gagged right now and my Maths teacher has gone ahead and given us grades for EVERY piece of work out of spite.
So yeah, thats just the start. Attendance and behaviour have gone to the dogs - two people I know expelled in two weeks - bullying's on the increase again, there's more litter, the whole school is getting dirtier and less attractive from a parent's point of view. And we're getting dumped with a plague of awful new student teachers during the first year of our GCSEs and boy are they fucking it up for us.
So yeah, you think you americans got it bad. Schools in the UK are getting fucked backwards by the LibCons right now (The Conservatives: Putting the n back into cuts)
I think the education we are given is pretty poor. It should be known that all schools do now, are teach you something and reiterate it throught middle school and highschool. They also teach student's things that aren't going to be viable in the real world so I'm getting the idea that they just teach us these things just to say we are given a certain amount of education.
Here in Canada (Vancouver to be exact) we have this thing called Planning class, you have to take in grade 10 and 12 in order to pass. They make you do things like record your daily physical activity (DPA they call it) to make sure your keeping fit. WTF I thought P.E. class was the way the government got you to do excersice (I'm not fat by the way). They make you write about your feelings and connecting with your inner self, what a bunch of bullshit right ?
What?
Since when does the school give a shit about your fitness outside of school, P.E. is for that.
I do no excercise whatsoever outside of school, what consequences would that have for you?

Head of geography in our school once tried to drop a kids final GCSE grade because they hadn't done any hard work for it at all.
Some teachers are just retarded.

Yearr 11, top set science class is, on paper the best of the best at science in the whole school.
Last year, 70% of the people in the class failed their end of year exam. You know why?
Because they are stupid as hell. They just don't listen.
We're sat in physics, doing electricity and sir mentions how convential current flows from positive to negative, as you'd expect. He then says that in reality, the electrons flow from negative to positive because some guy who was studying this made a mistake. Damn near the whole class erupts in a chorus of "WHAAAAAAAAA-?" and "BUT THEN WHY ARE YOU TELLING US THE FIRST THING".
Sir does what any sensible person would do. Explain. He gets halfway through the explanation and he's cut of by another fucking chorus of "BUT THEN WHHHHHHHY ARE YOU TELLING US THIS?"
The repeats for around 20 minutes each session.
Legitimate history project:
Make a video or skit of any country at any 10 year period in the 20th century. I chose to have 1917-1927 Russia. I got an A by dressing up as Lenin and giving a guy in overalls with a hammer a handshake, fall over dead, then a guy in a Stalin Mustache slaps that guy in the face.
Comedy = Free marks. Great education system.
Theres only 2 reasons.
Lack of funding
&
Lack of Interest
Students need to take more interest and state and federal government(s) have to step in and increase the budget. I'm not trying to blame students teachers are just as equal.
I had good teachers that made the subject more exciting.
I was forced to read shit called decodables when I was 3. They were 5 words over 6 pages with severe grammatical errors and just plain shit.
Example:
Ted was dressed to play.
Tom was not impressed.
Ted was to play today.
Tom said bring it on.
Ted brought it on.
Tom was sad.

Thank god I was actually reading a book at the time
I think airplane food is an upgrade compared to cafeteria food.
I fucking hate the schools here in America. I wish I could go to school in europe.
I'm currently a senior in high school. I can completely relate to the OP's brother as teachers do not inspire. They teach by a curriculum and only by that curriculum as schools become more and more prosaic and substitute art with more math classes.
Many say that education needs reform. No, reform is a matter of evolution; it is too conservative. Schools need a revolution to raise new generations.
But, hell, it was probably the absurdity of our education system that made me so cynical and allowed me to write this argument against it.

I personally like the food at my school. I usually order the same thing every day (Chicken sandwich, fries, and milk), but sometimes they're serving stuff like pasta on Wednesdays, and tacos, or turkey with gravy and mashed potatoes, and other delicious stuff at least once a month. They even have fried chicken every now and then. :buddy:
I'd say no, I had to study basically 6 languages at the same time and add maths and everything and my brain began to hurt. Then after hs went on to uss and after that to military and now in my university I have to brush up my language skills all over again lol.
Did I mention my brains are about to explode?
P.S. I'm not from the US.

My school was prob one of the few that had real pizza, a pizza store Pizza pizza (Canada pizza chain) makes a ton of pizza and brings it to the school. I got that cause it was prob the only real food.
we have to sing this

I think tests don't show any sense of intelligence other than how much information they can -remember- I got a C in GCSE german (I'm 17 now) I can't remember 95% of it now...It's pointless.
