That animation is fantastic, reminds me alot of 'classic' anime like Macross, Daft Punk's Discovery shorts, etc.
Yeah same. It had that late 80's/early 90's anime feel to it. I got reminded of Venus Wars when watching this. I really want to go play TIE Fighter right now.
IIRC the scenes with the ships are fully 3d renders its only the scenes like the zoom in of the destroyer and the internal scenes that were drawn.
The shading on the models kinda looked like it was hand drawn rather than "automatic" cel-shading, though.
I really like the references to the old Star Wars Flight Sims, I had flash backs when the "Missile Lock" sound played.
I would pay infinite money for a DCS: TIE Fighter module.
It's possible that the 3D elements were fully traced over, but still used as a base to ensure proper perspective on complex moving objects.
IIRC the scenes with the ships are fully 3d renders its only the scenes like the zoom in of the destroyer and the internal scenes that were drawn.
I don't think so, he seems pretty animatedly against CG ship battles judging from the description one of his other videos:
More reference material for people animating big ships, proving once again that instaed of lazy CG, "REAL MEN ANIMATE SHIPS BY HAND."
Don't know for sure though.
The pilots are supposed to be clones right? Great short nevertheless.
The pilots are supposed to be clones right? Great short nevertheless.
by the original trilogy era most storm troopers were actual people and not clones. plus the clone facilities were destroyed a while after the prequel.
the character animation is so awkward
Really not digging that art style.
by the original trilogy era most storm troopers were actual people and not clones. plus the clone facilities were destroyed a while after the prequel.
And most clones would be out of service because of advanced aging.
I can really appreciate the effort that was put into this but for some reason I just can't bring myself to really enjoy watching it.
it's a couple of things for me. the art is particularly well done, however the animation at parts is not. many of the movements don't seem natural, likely due to the anime style of less fluid motion with more emphasis on key frames. this creates a distinct and unsettling disconnect between the shots of the rotoscoped ships and the character animation which feels stiff and awkward in comparison to the smooth flow of the ship animation. potentially the best way to see the massive difference is to look at the shots of the imperial commander speaking. his mouth looks so incredibly awkward. another source is the beginning when the pilot first gets into the TIE fighter and is turning it on. the mechanical movements of the ship look great - the motions of the character do not. the arms jump around and look unnatural. also the music was terribly unfitting imo - not to minimize their efforts at all, as a whole the project is extremely well done. but there's small little things that detract from it. whole thing was awesome though, i'd watch a star wars anime no question. i really enjoyed the way that the animator faded the helmets of the imperials, that was very cool. makes it easy to understand why it's so easy to not care about blowing stormtroopers and other imperials away, because once you add facial expressions to them it humanizes them significantly more.
I'm curious how much of it is 3D animated with posterized time + filters to look hand drawn, and how much is traditionally animated. Anyone know?
The music is actually god awful and it's my only complain.
I loved the rock music added to it. I thought that was a fantastic addition, makes it seem more like an imperial recruitment video than anything else. :v:
My only problem here is human animations. They feel really poor and out of place compared to the rest.
It's nice to see that they remembered that Rebel fighters have shields, whilst TIE fighters don't. Although the 'hero' in the standard TIE fighter probably shouldn't have been able to shrug off a direct hit to the wing like that.
Astounding. I have a real soft spot for that particular 80s style as I saw plenty of anime on Laserdisk such as Gall Force, Bubblegum Crisis, Project Ako, Otaku No Video, Venus wars, M66, Wings of Honneamise, and many others.
This makes me realize how much I miss old vehicle games with had drawn, detailed sci-fi cockpits. When graphics still had little enough detail to require some degree of imagination, the cockpits were such an incredible boost to immersion that I always felt like the vehicle was literally on the other side of the screen.
A lot of it is rotoscoped iirc. he has other videos on his channel showing how he does it which is why character animation is so wonky at times. and for reference to the video above: As you can see things are still a little wonky in that video as well
I don't know why, but there's something about the rendering that makes it feel a bit more like a flash animation than a genuine cartoon. Perhaps it's the smoothed lines?

For those curious, the ship with the large spheres was an Interdictor. The spheres are gravity well projectors that prevent hyper drives from working, or and can even intercept ships in hyperspace. It's nice attention to detail that they target that one first.
that was some amazing attention to detail
like fire in space when the ships explode? You're right.
7 minutes and change run time, still better than the three sequels combined. Amazing attention to detail. I loved the guitar soundtrack.
The whole video kind of reminded me of Empire At War's space battles.
They even had the missile jammer, which as far as I know is unique to that game.
this is what knights of sidonia should look like
This is pretty damn awesome
My. God.
Okay, I will admit: Although I am not overtly fond of anime, if there was a series that was like this I would watch the shit out of it.
It's just an animation with star wars, nothing really happened. Sure it looked nice but it was kind of boring imo.
like fire in space when the ships explode? You're right.
When you're firing blobs of superheated plasma at your enemies, things tend to get a little toasty.
