First game I'm excited for in a while. It looks really good, and I loved Persona 3 and 4.
I really don't see how the combat itself is dull. The persona fusion system isn't really on the down low and it has a major effect on combat, depending on what personas you bring with you. They can really make or break a battle. Playing other JRPG's as well, I don't really see how the combat is any more dull. It plays about as expected of a JRPG to me, along with having it's own quirks and design. I'll concede on saying the plot doesn't wait for you, since I suppose it does really. However, with the game trying to go for a bit of a school simulation, I don't really see how else they could do this. The Social Links don't affect the plot, but they're tied into the game which is the important part, since it's a game first and a book later. I think asking for it to be one or the other really would take away from what the series sets out to accomplish. I feel that since it is trying to prove its message of bonds making you stronger and really getting to know people, it's kind of imperative for it to tie in with the game and encourage it to get stronger. The message wouldn't be nearly as strong. A point I also hadn't thought of till now as well, have you played The Answer epilogue for Persona 3? That one in particular features none of the social links and is pretty much just straight up JRPG. Despite requiring some grinding, it's a very solid part of the game on its own, and I think its existence proves just how important the JRPG elements are to the meat of the game, since it entirely relies on them. You definitely miss the VN bits a little, but if it had been the other way around, I can't see it being as interesting.
The effects of the persona fusion system are on the down low in that it is pretty much "just" a way to get new persona. There are some minor effects it can have on persona you create with it, but like I said, it's on the down low. The combat is rather dull because there is very little to it, in my opinion. Find out what element the enemy is weak to, use it and do an all-out attack. If they aren't weak to an element, just spam the most damaging thing you have available. Of course, while applying the occasional buff, debuff or healing spells. And I think the easiest way to solve the pacing issue would be to have many, much smaller dungeons dispersed much more evenly, or cutting dungeons into many smaller segments for more or less the same effect. I agree that the social links should tie into the game, in fact the little bonuses you get from the social links is one of the ideas I actually think are rather cool, but the fact that the social links are completely seperate from the story and all other interaction with characters just ends up making the gameplay and story feel even more seperated, in my opinion. And nope, haven't played that, so I can't really comment here. Except for fuck grinding.
As long as they're done with Persona 4 I'm happy. I couldn't stand Persona 4 and honestly thought P3 was better in about every single way.
I liked Persona 4 a lot but it got old after about the 5th game centered around it
The last P4 thing I want is the new version of Persona 4 Arena. That's it. And that's mostly because I can play as a large chunk of the P3 cast. Only way I'd buy another P4 fighting game is if they added in P2 characters but that ain't happening.
turns out it's just persona 3-2 that's the vibe i'm getting whatever, i'm sure it'll be good [editline]1st September 2014[/editline] not even complaining, i prefer persona 3's vibe over 4's
This is what im hoping for. 4 was the better game imo but I fucking love everything about 3 more than 4 in terms of tone, I like the blue over yellow, and the hiphop/raps and beats over the pop of Persona 4. The end of the world is handled in a way I like more. Persona 4 is still godlike though. What im most pumped for is how Persona 5 will handle its last days/months [sp]because in 3 and 4 both the final months the entire overworld gets fucked up and changes and people die or just go fucking insane and its really fucking cool seeing the overworld in such a state. Plus it really adds a lot in terms of narrative and tone to the story. Hope they continue the pattern in 5.[/sp]
