Yep, we're 50th in the nation in education, our politicians are bought out by oil companies, and our governor gets made fun of on international news for generally being a fucking bitch
not to mention just a bland state in general with very little culture
don't visit anytime soon
Reminds me a lot of Kansas

I'm there now. Just a few more years working here and then I'm looking to transfer elsewhere.
Colorado maybe. I'd be able to fly home easily if I lived near Denver.
I like how my state is one of the two that actively makes sure that the discrimination of LGBT people is not only allowed, but encouraged. This is why I'm most likely going to remain alone if I stay in this place. If I were to go to a therapist and tell them about my issues (which would mean I'd have to reveal that I like guys) then they have every right to turn me down and probably put me on a blacklist.
Would honestly be surprised if I live to see 30, staying here. As soon as I get the chance, I'm gonna try heading up North.

At least my home state of Wisconsin is accepting.
In practice you would never be fired for being gay so I wouldn't worry about it

You could legally face discrimination in pay raises and rank advancement, or be denied housing if you applied jointly with your boyfriend or husband.
crazy that there are first-world countries where you can get kicked out of an apartment that you're paying for just for being gay.

in happier news, popeye's chicken is delicious, definitely gonna stop by again

That's why I said in practice
Don't some municipalities have laws that say you can't eat ice cream if you ride on the back of a horse on any given Wednesday? It's archaic and in the case of LGBT protections already on its way to being changed.
Yes, there should be a specific legal guarantees made for people who are not heterosexual for everything you've listed, but I would bet a significant amount of money that the majority of gaypunchers will never in their lives run into those kinds of issues.
Okay the majority won't run into that but that doesn't mean that
In practice you would never be fired for being gay
because there's plenty of extremely homophobic people out there and there's no legal protection at all for the majority of states. In practice it's fairly unlikely that you'll be fired for that but it's absolutely a possibility and I'm sure there's many people who have been.
In practice you would never be fired for being gay so I wouldn't worry about it
Your boss can come up with any excuse to fire you just so he won't admit it was because you are gay.

America has an extremely lawsuit-happy culture. Firing someone because of a non-work-related trait is political suicide in the modern workplace
[editline]5th June 2016[/editline]
I'm not trying to argue that LGBT protections aren't important, I'm trying to say most people don't have to worry about coming out in the modern workplace.
That being said I still don't want my co-workers to know I'm gay

Don't really see how lawsuits are relevant when it's legal in that state.

Not-so-great movie, but relevant none the less.

I don't understand why people would have to worry about being fired when living in one of the gray states. How would someone at your work know that you are gay to begin with?
It's pretty easy not to have a conversation about sex at work, nor do your co-workers really need to know who you put your dick into.
Don't really see how lawsuits are relevant when it's legal in that state.
The states abide by the U.S. constitution, which prohibits discrimination in various ways. Lawsuits are going to be federal jurisdiction.
Don't mean to prolong this discussion, but that is how they are relevant.
That does makes a lot of sense. I mean, obviously, if any kind of discrimination happened towards me, I would make sure it's a federal matter.
I'm just saying it's shitty that the majority of your state seems to be against you if you're LGBT.
You're out of your mind if you think the southern states wouldn't deny a gay couple admittance to an apartment, on a regular basis. This is the place where a business can "stand up for its rights" in donating towards anti-gay legislation, and get extreme popularity for doing so.

In PA people can discriminate against LGBT folk, I feel bad for my cousin, he's FtM.
c'mon PA I thought you were better than that

I don't known about the US but you must live in a very good social enviroment to think firing someone because of a non-work-related trait is political suicide. It happens all the time and if you try to argue they'll destroy you because usually they have much more power and resources than you to win a lawsuit
So I've been thinking about how I'm doing my housing for these next Fall and Spring semesters for school. I'm tired of my current roommate because her boyfriend is always over. I was going to roommate with my one friend but I don't think it'll be a smart move.
But there's this one friend of mine, he's an Acting major. He likes me and wants to get a place with me. THING IS, we are probably going to have a lot of sex as roommates. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing, but my genitals say it's a good thing, so I'm just being thankful.
I'm so sexually frustrated I can't even think straight.
All I can think is gay.
He's straight but he's gay for me. Just like my other straight friend who's VP of my mental health club. I made out with him over memorial day weekend while he was broken up with his girlfriend.
I just want a hot bicurious straight friend who prefers women, but is more than willing to fuck me as I please. I don't know want a sappy relationship, I want a FWB.

I also live in a republican state. The majority of the U.S. is as I describe it.
Here is an article about everyone who went public about being fired for being gay in 2013: http://www.advocate.com/year-review/2013/12/18/meet-people-fired-being-lgbt-2013
There were 11 people total, out of the 300 million who live in the U.S. You can say "it happens all the time" as much as you want, but until it actually happens to you it shouldn't count as evidence of fact.
