I avoid the thoughts of this like the plague but there is one really attractive guy at work (which just makes it worse) and I recently got moved to be seated next to him. I wish he wasn't so bemusing, it'd be easier to be arbitrarily angry at my brain for crushing on him

72,000 people playing right now. They've recently introduced a comp mode that kinda sucks because it has no placement matches, but they also improved quick play so that Valve servers use better scoring methods, and a great matchmaking system that lets you choose exactly which maps you want to play on, and the game chooses a match on one of them. It was a rocky switch over to the new system but I'd say I prefer it to the old one. They're also working to improve things further in later updates.

Community servers are dead though.

Just walk up to people and have some small-talk. Try to find common ground with the people you start to conversing with. Granted, not everyone's out to talk with people, but most of the time you can just use common sense when assessing whether or not to talk to a certain person.

I understand that it's harder to do for some, but there's not much else to it than to just muster up the courage and get at it.

At least you have the luxury of not being in Finland(nor in the Finnish parts of the US presumably), where everyone just keeps to themselves and rather not talk to strangers unless it's completely necessary.
