What a fucking thriller that match was. Those attacks and duels on the field, the completely neutral referee, for the full two hours, and the first penalty session of the tourney. I thought it was going to be a letdown after Chile's first miss, but then Brazil missed, and what followed was one of the most tense penalty sessions in a long while. I honestly feel very bad for Chile, they did pour their hearts into it and played very well the whole tourney though, but alas, Lady Luck wasn't with them tonight. That shot one minute before the end of the game was literally centimeters away from going in, and the last penalty was off by just a millimeter. It was a tough call he made, but if you watch the videos back, Hulk made a hand ball. It was the right call. Referee being ridiculous =/= referee making a call not in Brazil's favor. Brazilian fans, please stop pretending that was some kind of fantastic win. It wasn't. It was narrow against a team that Brazil should have kicked ass against.

It doesn't matter if the goalkeeper is Buffon or Casillas, actually stopping a penalty kick is mostly guesswork, the ball moves so fast and the distance is just so short there's just no way to actually see where the ball is coming from. I'm not saying that Chile played significantly better than Brazil lol, they would have won if they actually played better, but Brazil, having a team that is supposedly way stronger than Chile struggled all the way until the end against them, a very commendable effort from Chile. Chile could have won as easily as Brazil in penalties if they were just luckier, which is why I think Brazilians have nothing to be proud of. If they are pitted against, say, Germany or the Dutch, I don't think Brazil stands any chance.

It doesn't even matter if you know where it's going if you don't jump before he shoots you're not gonna move fast enough to stop the ball. Penalty kicks are a whole different deal from stopping shots on goal and if you've ever been a goalkeeper in an actual game you'll know this.

The lucky thing goes to hell when the players tries to score a penalty aiming at the middle of the goal...

There's three possible areas you could cover, your right, your left, and the middle. The shooter may also shoot high or low, that means there's 6 possible target areas you have to cover. Shooting high is riskier than shooting low as you may hit the upper bar. The shooter may also miss but that's a different thing and generally the players chosen to perform the kick are the most accurate of the team. You could potentially just tell the goalkeeper to jump on one side or the other depending on the history of who's taking the shot but it's not guaranteed at all you'll stop it. It's not a matter of skill at all, and I'm sure that if Brazil had lost the penalties they would be whining to no end. I think we were lucky to win this match. Like, seriously, Fred should be hanged, Jo doubly so. Hulk was being a piece of shit early on, but as everyone started getting tired, he didn't and managed to play okay later on.
