Who the fuck spends eight hours plus on the computer a day
I sleep under my desk at my office and only leave for food most of the time, and even then I lead a moderately active social life and have time to get out and have adventures.
Well played sir [editline]26th May 2011[/editline] Who the fuck spends eight hours plus on the computer a day
Do school online, and spend a "normal" amount of time gaming leads to at least 10 a day for me. However I do go out and hike and such.
1:02 Is that your girlfriend?

This video made me depressed.
This video made me depressed.
It was the actual video that depressed you or the realisation of something which came after watching the video?
I envy this guy. Everything I do involves me sitting at home on a couch or office chair
Wow, that's creative. I might try something like this.
I've been in exactly the same place you must have been in when you started this project, Scot. For the past several months I've been feeling like my life has been missing some crucial element, and it's only recently that I identified the problem as a lack of anything noteworthy. I'm breathing, my heart's beating, and I'm getting older, but I'm still not really living, you know? I've been making a lot of plans to change that lately. Making a lot of lists of things I'd like to do, too. I'm going skydiving in a couple of weeks, and white-water rafting shortly after that. I also put out an ad in the Eastern Missouri Beekeepers' Association Newsletter reading "Bee Beard Wanted by Adventurer," with my contact information. I'm not sure why I did the bee beard thing, but it seemed like a really interesting idea at the time, and if somebody contacts me I fully intend to go through with it. In addition to all the small adventures, I'm planning a great big one. Not an original one, apparently, since you already beat me to the punch with an extended stay in Thailand, but one I'm looking forward to just the same! I'll be going to Japan instead of Thailand, however. I'm just going to jump into it feet-first and stay for a month or two (depending on how much money I can set aside). You've got the right idea. Life without adventure and excitement isn't life at all. I can't wait to shed my inhibitions and start running down adventures. Little ones, big ones, day-to-day ones. Just this morning I walked out the front door with a glass of orange juice in my hand, meaning to just stand on the front porch and enjoy the morning air, but my feet kept moving. I walked maybe five miles, and somehow ended up getting involved in an Indian wedding. I walked past the wedding ceremony the first time and thought it'd be cool to pick up the newly-weds a card and some flowers. I dropped it off on the way back, meaning to just leave them on their house's porch, but the Sikh (if that's the correct term) saw me leave the gift, and introduced me to the wedding party. The women were all wearing these beautiful traditional Indian dresses, and the Sikh's headscarf (again, don't know the proper term!) was very cool. Huge and bright orange, with some giant gem-thing in the middle of it. It was like something out of a movie. All the while with a now-empty glass of orange juice in my hand. Just goes to show that weird and cool and exciting experiences are everywhere, but you'll never know what cool things you might stumble upon unless you step out the front door.
OP, you've inspired me. I read this thread a couple of hours ago and I decided to just go outside and take a walk and I got my sister to come too and we found a small stream or brook or whatever you call it and just walked alongside it and it was simple and fun. I plan on doing something everyday now and try to take pictures. Thank you for the thread OP, really. =D
I also walked around my town and texted some friends and now one of them is spending the night. May seem small, but I don't hang out with people too much or talk to them outside of school, really. One thing leads to another, and to another. Wat. Automerge, where are thou?
It was the actual video that depressed you or the realisation of something which came after watching the video?
The realization that I'll probably never do anything like this with my life. I don't seem to have the social life needed nor the money. But actually, this did remind me of something I've been meaning to do for a long time: go on a drive. If the weather isn't rainy tomorrow, I'm going to hop in my car and drive with no destination.
^I've always wanted to do that, and when I ask people they always say "You got gas money?" Try things out by yourself, maybe take dance lessons or something along those lines and see if you attract people. Gotta be willing to meet people too.

I've got a lot of experience in both skydiving and rafting, and I tell you man... they are both incredible! I started working towards my skidiving A license but ran out of money :( I still got about 6 solo jumps in though. I hope to take it up again at some point. Good luck with yours! Rafting is just as awesome, last time I went there were only 3 of us and the guide (we all had experience) and the guide was a complete fucking lunatic. He insisted on wearing a kilt on the river, even though he was Australlian, then we went off a 16ft waterfall... backwards! It was intense. I leave for my next big adventure on Monday, me and some friends are going on a 212 mile adventure across the scottish highlands for charity.. using nothing but man power! grrrr! I made a thread about it (which got featured too) but if any of you guys missed it and are feeling charitable, you can donate online here http://www.justgiving.com/KieranDuncan Also I'm doing it all in a kilt :smug:
Oh, sweet, a cross-country trek! I've always wanted to do that, but America is so stupidly huge that a literal cross-country trek would take several months and many thousands of dollars. That's a little more ambitious than I'm feeling at the moment, but spending a couple weeks on a huge adventure like the one you're going on? Hell yeah, man, I'd be right behind you all the way. That's completely awesome.

Yeah, that whole "go walk somewhere" idea works very well. Ended up going on a massively long hike the other day, then cruising around with a friend I haven't talked to in probably a year. First time I'd left the house to actually do something in weeks :3:
This is radical as fuck. Medical problems keep me from doing a lot of exciting stuff, but I'd like to get out there more often if I could. It's kind of hard when your friends from high school either ditched you, left for the military, or moved away. I've been somewhat on my own for about a year. Looking forward to having my best friend move down here soon though. I feel like once he gets here and we can finally spend time together, that I'll have the courage to do a lot more things. I'm kind of counting on him to help me make my life more exciting. Should be fun.
I'm going to do this. Going to figure out something to do every day, just walk and see what happens and take at least one picture a day to show what I did and just make a small log of it.
Where did you stay while in Thailand, Scot? I'm trying to figure out how much money I'm going to need for an extended visit to Japan, but accomodations are a bit tricky. Even the budget hotels and youth hostels are very expensive on a long-term basis (say, three months). I have an uncle I could stay with for a while, but I'd feel like I was intruding if I stayed with him and his wife for too long. I'd imagine their living quarters are cramped enough without the addition of a 6'5" white guy camping out on their couch. I've bumped up my budget to 7000USD (maximum of around 10k), but the lodging costs for everything I've been able to look up cover about four grand of that, and the plane tickets another fifteen hundred. I figure you must know something about living cheaply in a foreign country, so spill the beans on how you managed to stay alive in Thailand for a month on just two grand!
I really don't know much about Japan man, Thailand is much cheaper in comparison. I spent most of my time staying in hostels and really cheap hotels... some were too cheap, I stayed in one place that was about $4 a night, it was horrific. I also had malaria which didn't help matters. Also, I had £2000 GBP, not $... you could probably do a month in Thailand on half of that though. I spent £600 on scuba diving alone to get my advanced license. I'm sorry I can't really be of more help, Japan is extremely expensive as far as I know, particularly compared to Thailand. Also, are you sure it's such a great idea given the recent earthquake and tsunami? One thing I'd highly recommend is getting a Lonely Planet guidebook, it was invaluable to me... it has great advice on places to stay, organised by budget. It also has lots of great budgeting tips. Another idea might be to look into couch surfing (google it for the website), where you can stay with people for free and they'll (usually) show you around town. It's great for getting off the tourist trail and experiencing the real culture.
And for those of you more content with the confines of your basement, why not make a similar project using screen caps of your computer/things you drew/songs you were playing/creative things you made. The possibilities are endless, and just because you're not outside/with other people doesn't mean it shouldn't be showcased.

Plus you got to admit, a lot has changed for both of us in the past year.

You meet local people, and they take you to cool places that tourists don't often go. It's well worth checking out.

I just saw this, and I have to say this is one of the most inspirational pieces I've ever seen! Great job sticking through to the end, very, very impressive work!
