It's discouraged. If you travel often by air, you'll notice that most, if not all, of the pilots have been male.
Flight instructors will very often make fun of girls going for lessons and that's... well, it hurts.
It's not discouraged it's just not something women are usually into.
How many female engineers do you know? How many male engineers do you know?
Well you might not know any, but I'll tell you, there are a lot more male engineers than female ones.
Females can be engineers, and no one looks down on them, it's just not a field females are typically interested in.
I suppose it's the same thing with pilots.
If you want to fly, I say go for it.
It isn't as discouraged as you're making it out to be. In the adult world, no one really cares unless you're just simply not qualified for the job.
Besides, if you can handle all of these idiots on Facepunch, I don't see an instructor being a problem.
Yes. I've only flown once on an orientation flight and it was absolutely amazing. I would love to have a license. Just make sure you're willing to put forth all the effort and cash. It's totally worth it in the end, though.
IMHO, if you really want to, you wouldn't even care about how expensive your lessons are/ how sexist the people around you are
Don't stop Believin'
No really, do it, regrets are bad and you'll wish you did it if you don't in the end.
You're right, you probably shouldn't be a pilot. Pilots need to be able to take action and think quickly. They must possess a strong will, and strong nerves. If you're seriously letting something as stupidly irrelevant as somebody else's opinion keep you grounded, then you have no business sitting in a cockpit. There are no excuses allowed in flight. Shoulder responsibility and go for what you want or give up. Those are your only options in this. I'm not trying to be mean. Pilots are the final authority when they're in the air. They are responsible for anything that happens to them and to their aircraft. Flying is not for timid people. If you're not absolutely sure that you have what it takes to get behind the controls of an airplane then don't do it. That's the first thing my instructors taught me. There can be no doubt.
I have to agree with this, if you have to ask a bunch of random people on an internet if you should do something, then you don't sound confident enough to actually do it anyway.
You should get a pilot certification because flying is interesting & fun, not because you feel oppressed or because you're a woman or whatever.
Fuck around in FS2004/FSX or XPlane in a Cessna if you don't feel comfortable with instrument panels yet. If you find that interesting, then maybe it's time to start spending some serious $ for the training/certification (it's actually not that expensive. I haven't done it but I've been considering it for a while & looked into it).
Join the airforce. The RAF if youre a brit, they got it good.
From what I've heard, joining the Air Force doesn't guarantee that you'll actually get to pilot a plane.
Go for it, Woman pilots look cool. And sound cool.
