Had a few accidents in my cars. Always worn a seatbelt and always walked out fine. I've seen friends having much worse though from bad driving!
1) When I was 17 (23 this year), Went round a wet corner too fast near the house and ended up slipping out and losing control on bald tyres, and went around a post.

2) April - Too fast a corner and misjudged the angle of it and went up a bank

3) April - A week later so I was still being cautious and went into the back of a lorry at 30-35mph due to locking up brakes down hill ..

And now, almost car show time...

musta been a hell of a month. the worst i've been in was when my brother was driving like an idiot on a day when there was 4 inches of ice/slush/snow on the roads and he kept gunning the accelerator and tried to turn into our development at like 50 mph, kept going straight, slammed into a huge wall of snow left over from the snowplows and got really stuck
My friend once tried to drift his Honda Element with 3 other guys in it (myself included) on a road that was nearly a 90 degree turn(no shit, it's probably the sharpest curve I've ever seen in my life) going around 50 MPH or so and wound up rolling the car onto it's side and deep into some brush.
Nothing too awfully bad, but after that accident I'm kinda terrified of driving.
Holy fuck, that picture of your arm.
How exactly did that happen ? It looks like it was cut along the top and pushed out from the other side.
I'm curious about that picture of your arm. What's the red bit that's exposed? I thought it was muscle but now I think that's a bit unrealistic. ( I'm not good at the human body... )
I clipped a mirror once

One theory is that the car landed on top of my arm and pulled it across a shit ton of dirt and gravel. The doctor was pulling out golf ball sized dirt/blood clots from my arm and the inside of it. But yeah, it kinda just filleted my arm over the top of it and it just kinda opened.

What you're seeing is the ligaments and tendons underneath the muscle. The skin and muscle tissue were both severed, so the doctor had to go deep inside of my arm and pull the muscle back together and stitch the muscle and then staple the skin. The muscle is doing quite a good job at healing the past week or so, but the wound is oozing fuck tons of random substances that smell like an aquarium. It's nasty.
(sorry in advance for hijacking your thread) anyway I got discharged from the ER 5 hours ago with no serious injury, thankfully. I still feel a little shaken and uneasy, and it'll probably be a while before I'm comfortable with getting behind the wheel again.
My car is fucking done. With the extent of the damage and considering how many miles the car has (250k), it'll just be a waste to throw money at it to repair it, which sucks because I loved driving that car. Tomorrow I'm going to the garage place thing to look at it one more time before it gets sent to the junkyard. also I left something in it that I really need back.
Another thing is that the driver that I hit may not have insurance on that car. They said they had AAA on the car but later they said they don't really know since it's not their car and they couldn't get in contact with the owner. So it'll be interesting to see how this whole thing turns out. Hopefully I can get enough money to buy a new car, but I highly doubt I will.
I'm sorry man! Glad you left with minor injuries, both sides could have been worse. My mom is in the same situation you're in in terms of the car, but she recently lost her job as well, so we're super tight on money.
I've only been in one accident. (Unless you count accidents where other people were driving in which case it's about 3 from my dad and around 5 from my mom's stepfather. 2/3 of thsoe from my dad being because he's a fucking drunk moron who can't resist getting behind the wheel after drinking and I was like 13 the last time that happened so I was too young to actually refuse.) If you can even call it that. I was backing out of my friend's driveway which is on a fairly busy street. Someone who was turning off a nearby street in the opposite direction as me decided at the last moment to turn towards me and into the middle turn lane which was exactly where I was headed. I backed into him at like 5MPH. He admitted it was his fault though and we just left our separate ways.

Drifting around a 90º corner isn't that hard as long as you actually know what the fuck you're doing. I did a 90º turn at 70MPH in my old car before without coming anywhere near close to wrecking because I was familiar with the road itself, the road conditions, and exactly what my car was capable of doing. Of course if you're just trying to show off to friends you're probably going to go further than what you should and your friend probably wasn't actually familiar with the road he was on.
Isn't 85-90 MPH a bit excessive though?
I always drive slow at times where I'm sleepy or feel not in control, better to be safe then sorry man and glad your ok OP.
Isn't 85-90 MPH a bit excessive though?
Cruising highway speed where I'm at. :v:
But yes, yes it is.
So for whatever reason the police report says that I'm a female :v

Safer option is to sleep though. I nearly sideswiped a Honda in Virginia the other weekend driving drowsy; Either nap or grab a drink/food.

True, but this was in an SUV. This particular car was incredibly top heavy, and it just couldn't take the turn like he wanted it to.

Well that was rather dumb of him then honestly. Doing anything involving turning at high speeds in an SUV or even a truck is rather inadvisable.
Yea shock is intense after a wreak. I got tboned because some asshole decided to go 90 up a hill when I was on top of the hill pulling out of my neighborhood. About to finish my turn and all i hear is this horn and i see this car coming at speed, My vision immediately tunneled and all i could see was the car heading towards me at slow motion and then I got hit, everything went black and I woke up looking at my steering wheel and looked at myself to see if I had everything. My arm was cut pretty bad from my door caving in but other than that and my neck i was ok.
I can't drive without wearing a seatbelt, it feels too insecure and I feel like I'm going to slide over to the passenger side when I turn.
My family has a really good car history in general. The worst crash is when the steering column somehow snapped when my brother was driving and we went into a ditch.
I am also super somewhat paranoid with my car. I make sure all my tyres are in good condition and inflated to its proper pressure. (Remember guys, deflated tyres more surface area, and when its wet more surface area means more chance of hydroplaning. Besides, it saves fuel too). I even make sure the driver seat has a proper bucket seat that won't throw me around in corners.
I have never crashed a car myself, closest thing to crashing was bumps and scratches because I hit some stationary objects when parking. On average the fastest I've driven and maintained is 90kph and when it rains I keep my speed at 70, mind you I live in a place where the national speed limit is 80 (56mph), it sounds stupid boring and I agree, my mind keeps telling me to press the pedal but I wont.
The only few time I drive fast is 120-150kph on a dual carriageway, with a central resrvation, no obstructions (ie. other cars) and superelevation in corners.
Central reservations are there to make sure no idiot comes into the wrong side of the road. I've seen a few on normal roads, some idiot was trying to overtake a car on the fast lane which was overtaking a car on the slow lane. A head on collision with two cars going 100 is not going to be pretty.
There was once I was driving on a three lane straight road, no obstructions, at 170 and suddenly a goddamn buffalo went onto the road. Instead of slamming the brakes hard I only braked to slow down and swerve to the other lane. Pretty much why I only speed on empty roads, it gives me more option in case shit fucking happens.
G-forces can push you around and body roll will have an affect on you. Get the wrong combination and you'll lose control. Superelevation helps you with all those g-force and physics and shit to keep your car in the corner even when you are going faster than you would if its flat. It saves your ass big time.
Another thing is to brake before corners and then accelerate when cornering. Some might argue that is the main cause of spin outs especially in RWD cars but you are to slightly accelerate and not slam the fucking pedals down, don't they teach you throttle modulation in driving school?
Acceleration brings the weight of the car to the back giving rear end grip.
I'm not saying everyone should be boring and not speed. Speeding is not wrong, but neither is being safe. Know your car and its limits. Do it right and you can even have fun in relatively slow speeds, speeding is not the only fun a car can offer.
+1 To what adam said. Speeding can be safe, if you're a decent driver, and not an idiot. Definitely know the limits of your car, and don't get too crazy. And consider a car that's fun to drive at safe speeds, like my miata. You can really hot rod around and have a lot of fun without going over 80mph.
I put a seatbelt on even when I'm dreaming. I vaguely remember a dream from yesterday where I was in the backseat of a car for some reason, and I remember making sure I had my seatbelt on.

I don't know why I perceived that wrong, but after reading the first sentence, I thought you meant you wear a seatbelt to bed. I was really confused haha

I can clearly remember doing this any time I'm in a car in a dream as well. Especially during any nightmares since for some reason my nightmares seem to always involve limited ability to move and in cars it involves being unable to unbuckle.
someone tried turning left and i guess they didn't notice me, so i slammed right into the front of their car going 50 miles per hour (80.5 kph), as i didn't really have time to slow down at all. i'm just glad i didn't t-bone them, would've been ugly.

the speed limit sign says 45 mph, i'll admit i was going 5 over, but i'm under the impression thats pretty commonplace everywhere. officers don't even ticket you for it

Really depends on where you live. In Oregon we have the same deal but from what I know over in Washington (or at least in Vancouver, WA) they don't allow even 1mph over the limit.

I generally don't speed unless I'm familiar with the area and know I can get away with it. In town here, you can get away with 10 over, as long as your keeping pace with traffic. In small towns? Be prepared to get your ass handed to you for going 23 in a 20.
Only exception to this was when I drove in Chicago a few weeks ago. Everyone was doing 75 in a 55 construction zone for 20 miles and gave no fucks. I just had to go with it and hope no cop decided to pick out my out of state plates.
Here in the Netherlands, and I think most of Europe, there's an error margin of 3 kmh, so you can always go 3 over. Any more though, and you can bet your ass you're gonna get a ticket if you're caught.

It's still 10km/h for those roadside poles.
But it's in between 2-5 km/h for these.
I was in an accident once, and I hit a bicyclist. I was driving 50km/h, the speed limit, and I approached a dark intersection at night. I started slowing down a bit late, when all of a sudden I see a bike in front of my headlights. I hadn't seen the girl on the bike at all, wearing dark clothing and no lights on the bike either.
Good thing I had my foot on the brake so I could slam it down and come to a full stop and just rammed the bike(and the girl) about 10cm back, at least that's what I can remember.
The only thing that's still really clear to me is the face of the girl on the bike, filled with terror.
No damage on the car, and nobody got hurt, but I was still shaking afterwards.
damn
surviving a 90mph crash is a big deal
props

Yeah man, I consider myself very lucky.
Been healing SUPER well! I go into surgery next Monday to get my wound scrubbed clean (all that dead skin, glad I'm gonna be knocked out), then they're gonna wrap it for a few weeks, then its time for the graft. I don't get ass-arm though :c, they're taking it from my thigh.
My mother is doing great as well, all in all, an amazing recovery from an accident that should have killed us.
