Thanks for all the advice, dudes. One more question: what video editing software should I be using? I've mucked around with Vegas, but I don't have a Mac so Final Cut (which people tell me is the best) isn't an option. What do you guys use?
The closest allegory for Final Cut would probably be Adobe Premier, it's the best trade off between complexity and features
I'd probably also recommend getting a book on editing, it's easy to get into bad habits in NLE's
Alright, ordered amazon's most popular book on short filmmaking and currently downloading adobe premiere. Camera should arrive soon. Thanks bros.
Neat stuff, don't forget to post your work eh
i don't know much about camcorders, do they record to HDD or memory sticks or stuff like that or do you have to tape it? also how much is a decent camcorder worth if it has the ability to record to hdd
The way most modern consumer level cameras record right now is to MiniDV Digital Tape; It's a digital format, but it's recorded sequentially on to a tape that you have to capture off when you plug into a PC. There are cameras out there in various guises that record to HDD, Solid State, probably even memory sticks, but the big tapeless format on the way in are the solid state memory cards in cameras like the Sony XDCAMs
A camera that has a HDD to record to over tapes is a personal decision; I do like having a physical backup of my work without having to do any extra backing up so when I haven't got my hands on the (really rather expensive, 4-6k) XDCAM cameras I generally stick to tape
If I was you I would actually go with a low range DSLR camera and a lens or two- most of them have video functions and the still pictures on modern cameras are fucking stunning.

It's impossible to get a DSLR with video function AND lenses for £400.
Those bastards sent me a camera with a broken USB connector. The book arrived fine though. Gonna sit and read about how cool Robert Roderiguez is while I wait for a replacement. As far as it works, though, I'm really happy. Cheers FP.
you should ask perfumly
Okay, after dicking around with Ok-Go (not the band) for about 2 weeks, I've been given a refund. Bit of a pain in the arse, I think. Have you got any suggestions for another camera I can get? Same price range, but hopefully the January sales will help. Thanks.
Also, is it possible/advisable to buy something from USA amazon and deliver it to the UK? It's much cheaper over there from you yanks.
Well, this is interesting:

Hi Tanthreecle
Just read your feedback and would like to apologise for sending the damaged model
We should have checked this carefully but we were overwhelmed with orders last month
We did also try and source another HG10 but because its a very old model its not easy to find now
if we had found one we would have sent it but we feel a little disapointed that you have left neg feedback
Your comments are fair and honest but because the amazon feedback system is waited heavily against the seller
that even a score of 2 is very damaging
As a gesture of goodwill we can offer a £15 payment for your inconvience
All that we ask is you withdraw feedback left?
We all make mistakes and we will try harder
I hope you can accept this offer and please respond to [e-mail address removed by Amazon]
regards,
Steve

What now? I careth not fer this £15 pittance, and it sort of annoys me how he's trying to bribe me to skew the feedback system in his favour. I still really want a camera.
Okay, my reply:
Hello Steve,
Obviously I regret having to give you negative feedback, but the problem here isn't just a £15 inconvenience. I have already purchased a spare battery for that camera model, as well as a carry case and all the necessary cables and equipment. The only thing I am missing is the camera itself. Your price happily suited my budget, but I can't afford to pay the currently listed prices for another HG10 and I really don't want to have to take a bribe to settle the issue. I would happily remove the feedback if you could provide for me a working Canon HG10, whether it's one bought from another seller, or just the one I had previously with the USB slot repaired. I'm sure we can come to a mutually beneficial solution.

P.S. I think Amazon removes e-mail addresses in these messages.
