I agree with the OP; a century is not a long time in comparison to the rest of history. Think of the middle ages; they went on with mostly the same technology for centuries. In one hundred years, we've gone from the automobile to brain controlled robotics and spaceflight. Not sure about a golden age; but we're making progress either away from it or to it. Technology could either plateau or continue forward.

I'm going to elaborate on my points a bit.

Here's how things are working now. The developed world's economy is in the shitter, but we're doing pretty damn good otherwise. We have food, water, shelter, and Facepunch. The undeveloped world, like some areas of Africa, are not doing good at all. They're starving and dying of preventable diseases.

Every now and then, the developed world puts some rice and vaccines into a box and drops it on Africa. It makes us feel all warm and fuzzy and useful but doesn't really help Africa any. They keep dying.

The solution would be to load up boxes of rice and vaccines for everyone in Africa, and drop millions at once. Then we could send in some humanitarians to build them all houses and schools and Facepunch servers. Suddenly Africa starts to get better.

But guess what? Now the developed world is getting worse. Because we sent away all our rice and vaccines and Facepunch servers, we've had to cut back. Sure, we're surviving, but we're used to a life of excess! We've come to like our supersized burgers and three-ply toilet paper. Because Africans have stopped dying of preventable diseases, their population increases tenfold. Suddenly, we realize that we can't keep helping them and expect to remain the "developed" world.

So two options come up. Stop sending aid and let Africa go to shit again. Or, put development of our own society on hold to keep helping the poor dying Africans.

Tl;dr? Humanitarianism is going to fucking kill us all.
