Yes. Perfectly. Although there are some grammar differences and different terms for our same objects it's pretty easy to understand each other. The same goes to Angola, Mozambique, Guinea, Timor and other countries that had Portuguese influence.
The only thing that differs the most is the accent. Brazilian people have a more open and "musical" accent than ours.
However between Spanish and Portuguese. It's easier for a Portuguese to understand Spanish than vice-versa. Last time I was in Madrid I could understand most of the people yet when I started speaking Portuguese, it would sound gibberish to them.
But that's because Spanish people are Dumb :v:

My grandparents are from Madeira, and I find it harder to understand people from Portugal than Madeira.
