Fuck man you should make regular livestreams with that little bird and that big lizard, both are just adorable
Importance bump :v: Seriously though, I agree with this completely. We need a "tegu-cam" and an "emu-cam". This might be a rather macabre question, but what did you do with the other one? Did you bury him, or bring him to the vet for them to cremate him?

That or get a wireless model. Tegucam would be just her sleeping in a dark box, since that's what she does 95% of the time right now since she's hibernating, and when she wakes up then it'll be 70% of what she does. She's also free roam, I don't keep her in a cage, she's just not let into the rest of the house without someone watching her because she'll get into trouble. As for Gertie, I buried her in the pasture, dug down to the Yellowstone ash flow and set her on top of it. The ground here has a thick layer of sandy soil with a solidified layer of ash from the last Yellowstone eruption. And when you go through that layer, you run into another one, and then another one if you're determined enough to dig through the first two but they're like concrete.
Well, glad to hear Gertie got quite the dignified burial. Wait, do you live in Wyoming?
Wait, the Tegu will get herself in trouble? How does a lizard get itself into trouble? [editline]22nd March 2012[/editline]

Man he's growing fast. That's a neat pattern he has. Will he keep that pattern or will it get ditched when he matures? They don't have 'baby feathers' like ducklings or swans, right?

Gerry will actually go through several color stages, right now he's in his baby camouflage. Next he'll turn a reddish brown with white stripes, and after that he'll loose his stripes all together and turn a sort of brown grey with a black head, then as he gets older his head and neck will turn blue and the dark feathers on his head will start to thin and fade. His feathers right now are very hair-like, with a fluffy down in between, there aren't any branches on the feathers that I can see, they look just like hair but when he gets older then he'll start growing longer feathers with branches on them though it will be very different from a regular bird feather. Some more dancing Gerry, he's two weeks old today too: Today's GIFs brought to you by: Fresh Food and Clean Water.
I've got to stop looking at this thread. I'm going to die of a cuteness overdose if I'm not careful.
I get my daily dose from holding baby chickens. Not exactly up to par with a baby freakin' Emu, but it will suffice for now :v: [editline]22nd March 2012[/editline]
No, about 20 minutes WNW of Boise in Idaho. make 4 gifs each 2-3 pages, this will keep people looking here :v: those gifs are so adorable!
Decided to measure and weigh him to see how much he's grown in a week. He was 540 grams last week and around 6 inches tall at the hip. This week he's 730 grams and 9 inches tall at the hip.

He probably can't keep his balance cos his a baby, how old it is?
That's because he is a Dinosaur, an 'Avian Dinosaur' as opposed to a 'Non-Avian Dinosaur' like Deinonychus or Velociraptor or even T. rex. He even has a single claw and two fingers on each of his wings. But all that jumping and rolling around is just him playing, he loves to do that when he gets excited or happy about something. When he's not goofing around he's very well balanced and agile.

Oh god, he is just so derpy, that's what makes him so damn cute! Also didn't you say you whistle to him? maybe a video of how he responds to that and what not? the .gif's are awesome but i feel like a video would blow us all out of the water, Suggestion: how about you put a camera on the tegu? that way we can watch her when she moves around? nahh just joking that would be cruel.

He could always get one of those, but since I don't think his Tegu fights crime or anything, it might not be very useful.

What does the tegu eat, and how long have you had it? (The more I hear about it, the more I want one. Maybe when I get my own house, someday.)
I think Pip would be an amazing name for an emu you probably already named it but I'm just saying if I had an emu, it would be Pip
He's going to be getting so big before you know it. It's a shame they won't stay small forever :(
He's going to be getting so big before you know it. It's a shame they won't stay small forever :(
like an ostrich ? i am monitoring this thread
like an ostrich ? i am monitoring this thread
Not quite as big as an Ostrich. Ostriches are the largest living bird in the world, Emus are the second largest living bird, ahead of the Cassowary and Rhea. However the Cassowary is heavier than the Emu. Each bird has it's own disposition too. Emus are very social and while females tend to be more aggressive both genders are docile birds. Ostriches come in second, they can be tamed but males become aggressive during the breeding season. Rheas are highly aggressive, the males especially and most people tend to end up culling the males to avoid being attacked unless they're being used for breeding it seems. Cassowarys are the worst, they're solitary very high strung birds and easily the most dangerous. Put long spikes on a horse's hoofs and have it kick you, that's a Cassowary kick. Whether or not the Cassowary can be tamed through hand raising is hard to say, I haven't heard of anyone trying it. Personally I'd love to take a shot at raising a Cassowary some day but there are barely a handful of breeders in the US, and somewhere around 300 birds actually in captivity and a lot of those are hybrids rather than true Cassowarys. Unlike the other large Ratites, the Cassowary is also verging on becoming endangered which further complicates matters.
Where did you learn all of this info? Did you just research while waiting for the eggs or what?
Yeah, I had over 50 days to read up on the incubation, diet and housing requirements of the Emu. The idea to get an Emu was sudden, but I didn't just run out and buy some eggs and throw them in a hot box. When I get an animal, any animal, I want to be able to provide it with the absolute best care I possibly can so I do a lot of reading on their diet and housing requirements. I also look at alternatives, which is how I got my Tegu. Originally I was going to get a Savannah Monitor and while reading up on them I also looked at other kinds of Monitors and eventually came across Tegus and ended up going with the Argentine Black and White Tegu. The Emu is the best choice for a pet Ratite due to their docile nature, but I also read up on Ostriches and I could have gotten one if I wanted to however they have a higher infant mortality both in the egg and after hatching compared to the Emu and higher housing requirements due to their larger size.
As Australian birds go, the Cassowary is the most Australian. Day-to-day activities include: pecking at things, walking around, sleeping and murder. Their legs are comically large and powerful. Even if hand-raised, I think the risks of being gutted (or a stranger/visitor) are still too high. I compare raising a Cassowary to raising a Big Cat. Keep the cute gifs coming!
I would like a vid of your Tegu just minding its own business, honestly. And a vid of Gerry of course.
Keep the cute gifs coming!
+1
hows your little buddy today? WE NEED UPDATES, he is like heroin.... just cute.... and.... more addictive...
He's mad because I won't let him sit in my lap right now so he's pacing and being loud and obnoxious. He'll give up before long when he realizes that won't work. And of course there's more crappy weather so no outside time today, I was gonna take the camera with me today.
I feel like this thread has more hearts than any other thread on Facepunch.
+1
you ever wonder why facepunch has a ratings system?
I remember when the rating you got the most would show up next to your username. I don't think I'd have a star anymore with this thread. The weather has cleared up a bit so we're headed outside for a bit.
