That's so cool. I want an emu! What're you going to do when he reaches full height? Are you going to continue to let a 6ft bird roam around the house?
[editline]13th May 2012[/editline]
Of course, I'd never make an impulse buy. I'd consider looking into it after college and once I can afford a house and these sorts of things
Stop making me wish I had an Emu.
hnnng I need another video! That was brilliant with him sliding around in the box + the music :v:
Haven't recorded anything new, will soon though.
I decided I'm gonna hatch two more Emus come October too, that's when they start laying again.
I'll incubate them at a lower temperature and see if I can get two girls this time.
You're the only parent I know that wants his child to have sex before he's even 1 year old.
You're amazing.
Oh my god he's so adorable, does he still wobble to and fro while running around?
Today is Gerry's 100th day since he hatched. He's now 2 feet/60cm tall at the hip and more than 7 pounds/3kg in weight. This will probably be the last post until October too, then I'll post some more pictures of him when he's bigger and an update as to the egg situation and I'll keep better track of things regarding incubation for those interested in following along.
The shininess drew him to it, but it may have been the lack of weight that encouraged him to swallow it because he won't swallow things that are that big. I've seen him pick up rocks smaller than that and spit them out instead of swallowing them. Course he may just have regarded the grommit as food and swallowed it anyway.
this might sound stupid but what's a grommit
It's been two weeks, what's new in the life of gerry? Been lurking this thread forever.

Nut, Washer, ect... Usually rubber
Gerry got invited to a 4H event for the kids next week, he loves to play kids and he's always getting visitors.
He did well for the 4th, I put him inside when it started to get dark and he didn't complain but I don't think the fireworks particularly bothered him, though I didn't want to leave him out there when the aerials started going up. What really got him was this thunderstorm which passed right over us last night, wasn't so much a rumble as it was the sky firing howitzers loaded with lightning. Took a couple hours to get him settled down after that, he was not happy.

It's a ring you put through a hole to keep it open and protect the hole from getting torn, like with shoelace holes. In this case it got ripped off a tarp by the wind and blown onto our driveway. Pretty sure that grommet must be gone by now though, but I haven't seen it turn up anywhere.

Was there any footage/gifs made?
No, I was too busy trying to keep him from going berserk. Ended up just cutting the power to everything in the room and just sitting silently in the dark for about an hour till he calmed down.
He wanted to run somewhere but he didn't know where to run to so he ended up just going where ever.
Went and made a video of Gerry doing some of the things he does best, like jumping around and chasing things.

I swear, that is a weird animal. In a really good way. But damn, it's weird. And very, very cute.
Yeah Emu are pretty cool, but they're kind of fucking scary at 2 metres.
Their mannerisms are just intimidating and it gives Emus a very undeserved reputation. Emus have no concept of 'personal space', it doesn't exist for them so he spends a lot of time being very close to you.
The way Gerry plays could be interpreted as an attack, but he's just playing.
He stands straight up as tall as he can, hisses (Actually sounds more like he's blowing his nose...) then hops around kicking his legs out.
Sometimes he'll run up in front of you and just stand there waiting for you to play along with him but someone who doesn't know him might think he is going to hurt them, and running away would just egg him on because he thinks it's part of the game.
Same thing when he chases you, being chased by such a big bird would scare the crap out of someone who didn't know better, but he doesn't intend to hurt anyone he just likes the run and doesn't do anything at all when he catches you.
How big is he now?
What about the tegu? Does anyone trip over him?
how's the little guy doing? everything okay?
Well he's tasted blood...

And the above is a lie and he just really really likes blackberries.

Little over 155 days since he hatched and around 80 days until eggs become available again.
oh, not so little anymore is he
Well I don't have to bend down to pet him anymore that's for sure. Haven't measured him but he's over 3 feet/~1 meter for sure, his legs are about as long as mine now and when he rears up he's just about eye to eye with me.
Another 3 or 4 months and he'll probably be full size.
Anymore news?
please update
Are you gonna go for round two? Maybe rustle him up some buddies?
Nothing on the eggs yet, October may be the earliest eggs may be laid but the latest would be December of January so patience is a virtue, I'll know right away when the first eggs become available but I'll wait a week until the pullet eggs have all gone away (Pullet eggs are underdeveloped eggs a bird produces to kick start it's reproductive system, they're typically infertile and wouldn't hatch healthy chicks even if they were).
Aside from that Gerry is very nearly full size and has no problem stretching his neck up until he's taller than I am and is 3 feet/90cm at the hip, still the friendliest bird you'd ever meet.
He's beginning to loose the feathers around his neck as Emus naturally do as they mature, his brown feathers are beginning to be replaced with blonde feathers with black tips as well. Come spring he'll probably have turned into the Big Blonde Bird instead of the Big Brown Bird.

Reminds me of my cat laying in the sun lit grass.
I wanna touch it's feet
