I think you need a Derek to bring naive fanboys back reality. I despise the cringy whooping and fanboyism when they show, well... anything. I also hate how people assume it will have all these far fetched features they seem to re-interpret from things the devs say, like fully AI manned capital ships, real time apartments on generated cities with people driving past their bedroom window to dock in real time and so on. Like they expect every single aspect of the game to obliterate anything we've seen in any other game ever. I hate Chris for the way he keeps pushing more and more features. I feel sorry for the dev team engineers. ...and all that said, I'm still riding the hype train, and backed the game since I've been waiting for this kind of game since the 90s. Honestly I'd be happy with a new wing commander game but if they can make GTA in space then I'm all in.

The campaign of harassment has even led to copycats going into actual death threat territory. Star Citizen can use constructive criticism to keep it honest and the fanboys in contact with reality. There is nothing constructive about the mad anti-fanboy Smart and his multi-decade vendetta against Chris Roberts. He will say anything to tear Star Citizen down regardless of how close it is to reality or even reasonable speculation, and his record at contradicting himself is under a minute. If you listen to Smart, CIG collapsed a year ago, Star Citizen has been in maintenance mode since February and none of the features included since then (including the fairly massive, internally navigable Starfarer) exist, they're about to be buried in lawsuits from backers and the FTC and any other federal agency Derek can think to name mid-rant, and Citizencon 2015 was the last Citizencon ever. As for fully-AI-crewed capital ships, that's actually promised and not just a fanboy hype-feature. Real-time apartments on planets are not confirmed, but they're an option frequently requested, and the state of the procgen means they're most of the way to being able to offer such a feature -- it should still be framed in the context of speculation, however. And, a core design goal in this game is to push the boundaries on every level wherever possible, so the fans do have a precedent for having high hopes even if some people fantasize about unlikely things. It's certainly the case that some fans have some major wish-fulfillment delusions going, but they'll be brought back to reality soon enough -- and Derek isn't going to be the one to do it, since he's living in his constructed reality where he isn't a miserable failure of a gamedev, and SC's ongoing success destroys that illusion.
Yeah I know he's poison. I still see a lot of criticism is received by the community as an attack on the game. Either way, it's going to be spectacular to see it fail on epic scale or see it be amazing. I hope it's not just a mediocre pay to win, unpolished grind fest though.
any news of when there might be a free fly weekend? I tried one a long time ago and it looks like it's come a long way since then, I'd love to have a look around that base thing
I expected one this week, but instead it's all ships unlocked just for existing backers. There's likely to be one with the anniversary sale in about a month. If you ask nicely it may be possible to borrow a FPer's account before then, but I can't promise for anyone else.
