This event proves that there is an intrinsic problem with the way people deal with the idea of crime and what should be done when such occurs. People are under the impression that punishment, not rehabilitation, is the only way to fix anything, such is incredibly barbaric and lazy. Nobody forced them to do it. They have brains and they can choose not to do it. They are bad people. They are not the fucking victims.
You can't expect bad people to behave good. They need to be afraid to do bad things. Punishing bad people sets an example for others.

Simple - everybody thinks different. No one wishes hope and optimism on people who go beyond to masking themselves, yet allowing that one person to show their face and help the road to ruining their lives. No one wishes it on first instinct, at least.
