I've got over a thousand hours into PS2, but I've been blind to all the problems he's lining up in the video. It's a shame the game is going downhill so fast. I've been playing recently too, but the new implant system has put me off considering how it's purpose is rip you off with RNG.
Planetside 2 is a dirty pleasure for me, and it's also a love/hate relationship. Every time I look back at Planetside 2 I see the missed opportunities and misappropriated potential. For every step forward the game took it also took a step back. Let's take for example: It was just early last year that they added the construction system. A fun concept for sure. Except you're only given a small handful of buildings to work with at the start: A cortium silo A victory point generator A wall An anti-infantry turret And an infantry bunker Every other construction can cost you anywhere between 1000 to 2000 certs. Did you just start playing the game and want to get into construction? Tough titties, you gotta sacrifice the necessary certs you could be putting into weapons and upgrades. It simply isn't accessible unless you've been playing for a long time. Recently, they changed the implant system(which was brought up in the video). Originally you only had one implant to work with at any given time and it consumed implant energy. Implants were either loot drops or were bought with certs/money from crates. Implant energy either came as a loot drop, as something to craft with other implants, or straight up bought with certs/money. Now you can equip two implants at a time and they don't consume energy. Which seems nice on the surface, except, if you had implants prior to this update, you don't get their equivalents with this new system. They recycled them into a resource called ISO4, used to upgrade implants in the new system. This last point is more of a nitpick on my part: From launch until sometime in late 2013 or early 2014(feel free to correct me on this), camos came in 3 separate categories; infantry, weapon, and vehicle camos. Each camo costed $5 a pop and if you wanted the same camo for all 3 categories you had to shell out $15. Then they changed it so that you only had to make one $5 payment to have a specific camo for infantry, weapons, and vehicles. Did they refund people for the additional two camos they bought prior? No. Sorry for the long post. Every time I hear or read about what Planetside 2 could've been I have to voice my concerns as well.
I didn't really think about it before but all his criticisms are pretty much spot on. Still, you don't get to do shit like this in many other games: What's kind of bad is that I wouldn't have been able to do this well had I not upgraded stuff like my grenade capacity and anti-infantry mines to maximum so it's a bit bitter-sweet.
Planetside 2 is very much a love-hate relationship. On one hand, I really enjoy the game, and I love the massive battles you get into. Personally I like the camo, so I don't agree entirely there. I do agree that it can get tedious and getting bogged down at the same three bases for hours on end can be really frustrating. And of course, the slow cert gain is awful, though they at least did it make it easier to get.
If I were to point at where I thought Planetside 2's problems came from, I'd guess: -Executives that didn't seem to want a Planetside game as much as they just wanted a free to play PS4 shooter to shovel out and make as much money as possible -A development team that was split on wanting to make a Planetside game, stories came out like the lead combat designer having to be told that he couldn't cut out MAX units and VS in a Planetside game -A much, much smaller budget than Planetside 1 -Everything surrounding the Free to Play cert system. On top of all the grind killing the playerbase I had a brief chat with a semi-prominent player turned developer, and he said "Yeah, we finished the Rocklet Rifle but we can't put it out yet because we've been told we need a way to monetize it. It's literally done." Planetside 2 is such a tragedy to me because Planetside 1 had such great stuff going for it. Gunplay and netcode were game-cripplingly garbage, but everything surrounding those two things was so neat and if they'd gotten decent funding and the right team, I would shell out money for a proper sequel improving on its faults in a heartbeat.
