FIRST TANK FINALLY GOING GOOD Alright guys, cycling finished, was demolishing 2ppm ammonia daily so I thought I was ready for some fish. My build is: Aqua one horizon 182, replacing lighting with Fluval Fresh and plant 2.0 (Hooked on a smart timer), filter with Fluval 406. Current plants: Ambulia 2x Amazon Sword 2x Water Wisteria 1x Crypt 1x Java fern 1x Anubias 1x Dwarf? Hygrophila (it goes red on top idfk) But it's pretty happy 2x Java moss 1x Telanthera Some Pigmy Chainswords I'm planning on growing out and propagating most of these & also adding a blue stricta. (Also would love to know if there's any good looking root feeders I should get!) Current stocking: 1x Male bristlenose bigboy 14x Neons Tetras 3x Male Guppy 2x Male Endler Guppy 1x Male Swordtail fish Here's some pics! The tank: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/244344/e5e7c114-05f2-4f67-8dc8-30b47169534b/IMAG1270.jpg Some fish pics! https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/244344/3bea2e25-9a2d-4908-806b-7e469502e04c/IMAG1274.jpg But this god damn Endler keeps fucking off my guppies, he's friggin tiny but is a real piece of shit so far lmao https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/244344/d08be03f-69ba-4543-9a07-1d073b72af29/IMAG1272.jpg
You might want some females for those guppies to remove some of the aggression.
Just know if you do that you'll have like 500 of them in a few months
Do LFS stores take guppies from customers? I might just give the endlers back, everyone else is happy.
Anyone here got happy pearling plants willing to give me some tips if im doing things wrong? Im doing everything but CO2, got root tabs (osmocote aquatic), flourish for micro nutrients, made some stock standards of KNO3 and chelated iron. Got a dosing schedule going, used rotalabutterfly calculators to help me out. Nitrates sitting around 10 - 20, and my light is at about 60% brightness, about 14-15in from the plant bases. Im hoping to make the tank thrive without co2.
My Acei bit my finger while I was feeding the cichlids today. Man does it hurt, even though he has some of the smallest teeth of the tank it hurts 30 minutes later. Unrelated but related https://i.imgur.com/Xp1GqtB.png
Picked up a Aqua one 380 for $40, finally have a quarantine tank now ! Going to replace the CFL housing with a flood light and use it to grow extra plants and breed RCS when not in use for quarantine. But unfortunately the past owner broke the filter intake so I need to jury rig an elbow and a spray bar out of PVC to get it working.
Otos are true algae eaters if you want to get a school of them.
Yeah I might grab 3 or 4, but my tank is still maturing and I didn't want to drop those poor bastards into a freshly cycled tank.
Jellous you have the space for a second tank, i'd love to set up a breeding tank for some shrimp to keep my betta fed rather than the pellet crap I usually give him. At this point im kind of tempted to sell the lad and replace him with something that won't eat the shrimp, the plants look so much dirtier without shrimp in the tank. Also my java fern is sprouting smaller ferns, im considering removing some of the rocks to make space for a few of them to grow in so I can sell them on ebay in a couple months (Assuming anyone actually buys java ferns on ebay)
The footprint of the Aquastyle is tiny? You could literally make a shelf and put it on it. I feel like this might be a pipe dream but I want to breed RCS and dump a bunch in my community tank every so often so I have a stable population. Hopefully them, some otos and a bristlenose will clean the diatoms up.
Im in a sharehouse so my life is in a single room pretty much, even my 2ft tank is a squeeze to find room for, the floor here has no supports in the center of it so im limited to keeping all my stuff around the edges of the room :V
Jesus, fuck living in a sharehouse. No units nearby that are cheap?
The new high flow shower head I have works great to clean those nasty spongies.
Have I shown you my red sponge? https://i.imgur.com/YYZ1A2Z.jpg

I'm pretty sure it's just from the food I've been feeding that tank, the bottom feeders get some of those shrimp pellets with the little red dot in the middle and the bigger top swimmers eat it sometimes.
See everyone tells me corries are omnivores but my bois refuse to eat anything thats not meat derived, they completely ignore algae wafers (I have a fucking huge bag of em too...) so im thinking I might have to give the one you linked a shot given it has both in it.
So I have some male and female guppies that somehow got mixed up for all males. Thinking about adding more males and females, but I definitely dont want a huge population explosion. Will they eat all the fry before they become adults? Is it bad that this is my preferred outcome? And will it negatively affect bioload having tonnes of fry, or it about the same as a bristlenose taking a huge shit?
I can guarantee you they will not eat all the fry, some always survive when you don't want them to. You can always see if any of the local stores will take them off your hands. And no its not a bad thing to want as an outcome, if they all survive your tank will crash. I got lucky with my catfish in that the male I have seems to be a little bad at the whole sex thing.
Looks like I'll starve them right before hand, and once they get a taste for fresh fry they will never stop but seriously I might just flush the female or try give it to anyone first.
Don't kill a fish just because you don't want it. Also don't even flush dead fish, just bury them, it makes you look like less of a monster and it's free fertilizer.
I don't know what to do with them if they breed like that. None of my local LFS take them, I don't know anyone who wants them. What am I supposed to do, let it breed and have to get rid of a large amount of fish?
any LSF should take the female if you offer to just give it to them for free. That being said are you 100% sure you only have a single female? If thats the case you may not run into the guppysplosion issue assuming you have enough other fish. Though I would still look for someone to take her off your hands eventually, if its only one she will likely get stressed from all the males wanting her all the time which can lead to death.
Culling inbred fry is the only time purposefully killing a fish is acceptable. Or just letting the fish in there at them.
None of the local LFS took the guppy lmao, I've just put it in QT tank and will let it give birth and give all away on gumtree.
Jeeze that sucks, not even where you got them from originally? I suppose if you were giving a bunch away at once someone might take them all as feeder fish
Yeah, they said they cant resell or use them, and none of the staff wanted it. On a side note, my aquarium is going well, all fish and plants are happy. Dosing Flourish once a week, dosing tank to 20ppm potassium, resting on fish food and poop for the N and P, adding osmocote aquatic for the root feeders. Plants really green and no signs of any problems, growing like crazy. Fish are happy too, guppies playing with the endlers and swordtails in the strong current. Got 3 fancy female fighters, they seem to like the current too for a while then go to the protected parts of the tank to chill. All are healthy and no signs of sickness :-)
man my cories spend 99% of their time digging their face into the sand looking for food, I would figure a bristelnose would do that for the majority of his time too.
That's how a cory do
