• The Amazing Aquarium Thread- Why is Fishy Sleeping Upside Down?

I thought it might be due to plant matter breaking down in the tank combined with all the BBA, im going to start being extremely pro-active at removing stuff that looks like its dying and once I can keep the PH level using additives im going to start on an anti BBA treatment.
Yeah, algae is going to raise your pH by adding oxygen if it isn't already saturated. Plant matter shouldn't have a bombing effect unless you have a whole plant or more die. I had huge amounts of plants dying before I stepped up my fertiliser game and the pH only went from 7.4 to about 6.6, melted plants all over the place etc. No fish died from that, but algae flourished due to all the waste.
Just sayin, rummynose tetras are fantastic. The way they all move together is really cool. I suppose its cooler to mesince this is my first time owning a schooling fish (that properly school that is)
So I got this 120 gallon I've been procrastinating getting set up because I don't know what substrate to use. I want to have a really nice and healthy, natural looking planted tank. Maybe get a CO2 thing later on. We're going to transplant the fish from the 55 gallon into it. All we got right now is a dozen or so neon/cardinal/glowlight tetras. I wanted to get a lot more so we have a huge shoal. Maybe some Discus or something cool like that aswell. But I want a good foundation for the plants because I used generic black sand and gravel in the 55 and it didn't go so well imo. I've seen a variety of opinions on this and was wondering what ya'll thought.
If you've got a 120 get some Oscars!
BLACK DIAMOND BLASTING SAND Pls Inert is so easy, just DIY osmocote capsules, cheap and quick for any root feeders, or just go with column feeders Also just got myself a peristaltic pump for automatic dosing! And getting a 6kg co2 tank soon with timed solenoid. EI dosing and high light and co2, shit is going to be so cash.
Oh hey It turns out I used to drive past literal mountains of that stuff as one of their plants is near where I used to live.
Any of you guys have any idea what these fish are? https://twitter.com/ylYGgjG5n7OVJUD/status/1057629397228765184 https://twitter.com/ylYGgjG5n7OVJUD/status/1056862415831224321 In the first one he mentions coelacanth but that doesn't make any sense, I don't know of any in captivity.
Second one is a breed of Bichir, unsure about first
2nd is for sure a Bichir, first is too dark to tell but it's definitely not a Coelacanth because they can't survive very well in aquariums, even big museum kinds.
My Darwin Algae shrimp has babbies! I LOVE these guys, eat bba, gsa, powder algae, diatoms, you name it. Even dead plant matter. Best algae shrimp out there IMO. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/244344/110dfc2e-9f59-4bb4-bdee-9f38471d2ffc/IMAG1510.jpg
I feel like this thread is dead since the merging of all the other shit into general. But anyway, I'm going all out on CO2, 6.8kg tank of the shit with a solenoid setup. Have no idea on diffuser though, I've been looking at a bunch and I have a couple choices: Glass ceramic, GLA atomizing diffuser or just a fluval diffuser. I see complaints about large bubbles in ALL of them, so that's kind of turning me off. Anyone here got experience that they could chime in with ? I'm a bit stuck on which to get.
Not experience but I did look into it a lot earlier, if your worried about large bubbles I remember seeing something that was akin to an upside down marbel track you could mount on the side of the tank which the bubbles would have to travel up. Since you only really need them to be dissolved before they reach the surface the length of said track was enough for rather large bubbles to be used up in. I don't really see the issue using a regular diffuser though, just replace the stone within the recommended time and you should be good
This is a Betta tumour. Relatively common from my experience. Possibly cancerous, who knows. No real treatment other than surgical removal. Just feed her healthy foods and see how she goes. Most likely a benign tumour tho
Apparently Aqueon's glass tops don't fit Marineland tanks. I know this after I spent $30 on one.
FYI https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1861/8ada05c9-8ec2-4632-b6a6-73408e77b2c2/Screenshot_20181202-154946.png
I've had this issue in both directions, it sucks. AFAIK, the Aqueon top doesn't even fit the Aqueon 29 gallon. The marineland glass tops fit better anyways.
In the process of painting my 125 gallon. Just bought 150 pounds of Black Diamond for $24. Hell of a deal. Hope it works well. Have any of you used a layer of Mineralized Topsoil or something similar? Or will Black Diamond and some fertilizer pills be good for a planted tank?
Couldn't just use the BD as a cap over some aquasoil/organic mix?
I was looking into using the BD as a top layer and using something for the plants on the bottom. I just never done a lush planted tank before and I wanna do it right but don't know all my options. I don't know if I'm willing to play around with a home made Mineralized Topsoil in a 125 so something store bought would probably be better. Any brand suggestions?
Thanks ❤️
It redirects me to the first page when I try to open the 28th, what's with that? Also, congrats Flak!
There is no 28th page
Well the forums are just fucking with me then
There was an invisible 28th page for a bit. It's a weird bug that happens when posts deep in the thread get deleted when someone's account gets deleted, or something like that.

Thats $650aud, you can get a good sized tank + regulator and the other stuff for about $250 so thats like, $400 for a computer to measure dosages. Sounds just a teeny bit overpriced imo, I'd say you can definitely make an auto dosing system by having a camera read out the color of a permanent tester with an LED over it to ensure constant lighting. I have all the gear I need to make a temp warning system with an arduino nano but everytime I go to do it something distracts me, usually the fish.
Hmm in our lab those multi sensor probes cost >$5000 and a lot to keep running and calibrated. pH and Temp probes would be cheap territory but when you want more like dissolved oxygen etc you will pay out the anus. Also guys, would highly recommend jebao dp4 dosing pump. Cheap as hell and works great. Using it to dose micros and macros in stock solutions. Just needs to be calibrated then its good to go.
Hey so you know how I said "ill find out why" like a month ago? I still haven't. I have no clue whats causing it, I've ensured there are no dead things or rotting plants in the water and it still just slowly goes down and down. I figured maybe it was the aquasoil but I was under the impression that only happened for a few months before stopping, meanwhile this tanks going on a year old and the bigger tank which has it too doesn't experience this whatsoever. I wonder if maybe the rocks or sand are doing it?
That camera sounds a bit overboard Something like this would be less cumbersome https://www.amazon.com/Aqua-Galaxy-PH-Temperature-Probe/dp/B00SNMWF14
