If the flow on the intake is a lot, strap a sponge on there. It will prevent fish from getting sucked in. I lose fry all the time from intakes when I forget to put those on.
Pantyhose work well, too. [editline]16th March 2017[/editline] Pantyhose are a great aquarium tool in general tbh.
I have an actual sponge that was designed to fit around the intake on my filter. I hate using it though because it's so thick that it actually stops a lot of stuff getting pulled in.

Those little small socky ones you get from the shoe store trying on heels work pretty good. Also, I was thinking of ember tetras for the fiance's betta tank... although he did eat one of the neons we added recently so IDK. :wideeye:

To be fair I have found mollies to be much more sensitive than other livebearers. Must be genetics or something. Test the water again maybe? Sucks your tank has gone through so many issues. :c
It's possible it's some sort of parasite, flukes maybe?
I checked her, everything was normal. I still have no idea what happened.
I finally put my rescued fish in my tank, and one of the new Balloon Bellies was pregnant, as soon as I put her in the tank she popped out a single baby. Wonder when the rest will come out.
Has anyone ever ordered fish online? I'm curious as to how that works.
Has anyone ever ordered fish online? I'm curious as to how that works.
It works great. Back when I was knees deep in the hobby I bought a lot off Liveaquaria. Sometimes you'll get the wrong fish (See my story about Bruno the murderous Cichlid above) but generally the service is great. Expect it to be more expensive because you're literally shipping bags of water in a Styrofoam cooler. They were really good for some harder to find stuff. There's also forums and sites where you can trade fish with people. I was flirting with breeding and selling my own fish online but never got to it. You can catch yourself a pretty penny if you got the right stuff. Cons: You don't always know what you're getting. Unless you're dealing with a private seller and they got pictures of the same fish they're selling you, you're not going to know what your fish looks like until you get it. Some private sellers suck at it and the fish arrives DOA. With big sites like Liveaquaria, you're buying your (sometimes expensive fish or coral) based off a stock image of the species. Give it a go, though.
Getting shipped a dead, injured, or ill fish scares me too, even with a quarantine. Because with a physical store you can at least see any physical symptoms of parasites or the like.
I don't think a reputable vendor would ship a sick fish knowingly though. Could hurt their buisness.
I don't recall Liveaquaria ever sending me a fish that was DOA. Though I did get some blue crayfish that died in transit from a private, though that was the fault of the shipper I think. They got too hot.
I don't think a reputable vendor would ship a sick fish knowingly though. Could hurt their buisness.
Knowingly, I doubt they would. But there's all kinds of sneaky fuckers that don't show until a lot later, like my first gourami, he had a worm that grew out of his gill after like four weeks, and nothing else had parasites so I can only assume it was from the store.
yuss, our new company site looking raad. [editline]e[/editline] I rearranged some decorations, added a plant, chopped a bit off my cool plant to see if it'll grow, and finally got a cucumber for them to try. It took them 15 minutes to notice it.
That floor to ceiling reef is sick.
Forgot to post. The new female salvini made eggies yesterday. There's at least 300. Gunna leave them to themselves and grow out the strongest with some convict babies. The dad is useless though (his first spawn, mom is old and experienced) and barely chases the other fish it's hilarious. He goes and attacks his own reflection instead hahahaha. I have to do a water change and put the dithers in there though, worried once the eggs hatch the mama will go psycho.
Doing maintainence on a floor to ceiling tho :ohno: Any stocking suggestions for a 5.5 gal?
You could get a really pretty Betta. Minimum for them is ~1 gallon iirc.
What's a good place to buy driftwood from? LFS doesn't have it, no places to pick some up either.
I got a decent chunk off drsfostersmith for like 8 bucks when I ordered food.
What's a good place to buy driftwood from? LFS doesn't have it, no places to pick some up either.
Aquatic Arts has both livestock and hardscape. I've never bought hardscape materials from them, but I can vouch for their livestock. I've only ever done local pick up though so I can't comment on shipping.
There is a Chinese restaurant I go to with family that has a wall-to-ceiling tank. It's pretty cool.
One of my corydoras has learned to feed at the surface, not only that he swims upside down on the surface to do it more effectively. poor man's upsidedown catfish
My newest Cory does that! He's fucking adorable and I love him. [editline]24th March 2017[/editline] PetCo's dollar per gallon sale is coming up soon so I'm thinking about getting a new 10-20 gallon and putting it in my room once I get rid of this junk that's there right now. Sure it'll block my window and be a fire hazard, and also be next to a lot of electronics, but fish.
"And it’s important to keep them in groups, since they are a social fish and will quickly become stressed if they aren’t kept in large enough numbers. They may even go into permanent hiding if there are kept in smaller groups and should always be kept in groups of at least five. If possible, they should be kept in even larger groups, and will exhibit more natural and playful behavior when there are more of them." This still pisses me off, I only got one loach when I stocked my tank and no store has had any since I found out they needed to be grouped up. Now I'm afraid it's too late for my guy to be playful and I fucked him over. I really want to get him some friends but... Order Total: $39.36 fucking shipping.
This is so cool. I like to eat crayfish but I don't know if I could kill and eat them if I'm raising them myself. At that point they become pets
Cherax quads are sweet. Never had them, though. That's a good idea for a set up. Might have to do that one day.
Welp. Surprised both of these didn't happen sooner. Male salvini is a cunt moreso than usual. He has to be a showoff to his new mate at every single opportunity he gets. Hence why he recently started attacking the frontosa I rescued a while ago. EVEN THOUGH THE OTHER FISH EAT HIS BABIES. Right in front of him too. He isn't too smart. Now I have to find a divider, the frontosa is currently in my 10 gallon, which he dwarfs. If I can get him back in the 90 about 20 salvini fry will be going in the 10 as grow outs. I tied using my divider in the 20 but the breeding adult guppies kept swimming though so no. OH and then the heater that I use on my 10 is crapped out. For some reason it gets stuck on, to be fair it's like 5 years old, had a good run but I've been up since like 4am monitoring the temperature, hit about 83 overnight. Went to go grab my other emergency backup but it had been sitting there for so long that the rubber deteriorated! I gotta drop some bucks today. Going to replace the heater on my 90 as well, luckily the lfs has good quality eheims for dirt cheap right now. I will probably order a temperature controller if the guy can order me one, looks like all he had is neptune stuff which is pricey as fuck though, hope there's a generic brand he can order, I know there's one called inkbird. Anyway I did find a taker for the frontosa. Hope this deal goes through, will be trading for a lot of charcoal and a small filter that I need for my 29 gallon. Mostly I want him to go to a good home and the guy from monsterfishkeepers has a colony starting. He must have good genes to be able to survive this long so if he meks beppies then yay. The conditions I got him from were pretty bad. He was almost beaten to death by an mbuna when I found him with my male convict, choco pleco, and stumpy.
So I guess I can eat crayfish after owning them as pets....
Doing maintainence on a floor to ceiling tho :ohno: Any stocking suggestions for a 5.5 gal?
I agree, but it could be done (just a pain in the ass) all it would need is an accessible opening up top and a hopeful plumbing to the basement/separate room. There's a few clients I've serviced that have similar layouts, but it is a real pain in the ass. 5.5 are great for collector shrimp [editline]29th March 2017[/editline]
So I guess I can eat crayfish after owning them as pets....
speaking of crays, I used to have this gnarly dude for the longest time, he was definitely big enough to eat.. I wonder if he was blue raspberry flavored?? [t]http://i.imgur.com/rd7BAvm.jpg[/t]
Dropped some bucks yesterday. Picked up a shiny new glass lid for my guppy tank (price seems to have gone up on the perfecto/aqueon glass tops, I paid 8 bucks for my old one now it was 20 at petco, and almost 40 on amazon without prime either for anything above a 10 gallon tank, yeesh), an eheim jager trutemp 200 watt heater, a cheapo marineland 25 watt for the quarantine (shitty but will get the job done), a sponge filter (dirt cheap, was 5 bucks for a 30 gallon one so I couldn't pass it up, slapped it in the guppy tank), a whisper air pump (only 12 bucks for the 60 gallon one, petco matches online prices from their website!), and a bunch of filter media. Needed these haha. I did save the old aqueon pro heater from the 90 as a backup. Shit was made in italy so who knows how old that is, wtf? Next things on my replacements list will be new bulbs probably for my fluorescent lights and maybe a full on replacement quad t5 for the 90. Not sure yet. I'll probably do a regular t5 shop light rigged together with a second one or those reflector ones you use to grow the dank kush. I will probably see if I can find something like a 150 tall to upgrade the tank within the next year, will need a new one soon I think, or I will save money to get the tank's front panel and all the seals renewed professionally. There are some custom aquarium places scattered around here so maybe I will contact them. Gotta find a decent job though so we can afford that or start pumping out baby salvinis and fancy guppies on an industrial scale haha. Luckily the fiance agrees if I can start getting enough income at least for paying groceries he's fine with me doing just fish! So I may trade some things and pick up a 40 breeder if I can grab one with a stand. I can tear down the 20 which will fit up in the closet and put the 40 in the corner by my desk no problem. Eventually once we can afford to move into a place I will try breeding either flowerhorns or discus or rare guppy breeds in the garage I think. Some serious cash with those depending on the type. I'll have my dad and his friends weld me some breeding racks. I should contact the guy I got the female salvini from and ask about how much I should start saving up, that dude probably had a good 2000 gallons of breeding setups stuffed in the 1 car port of his garage. Also here is the massive cloud of baby salvinis. The mom is being a douche so I gotta make a divider, couldn't find any large ones for sale: Oh and my convict fry hatched yesterday too. Fingers crossed I get some marbled ones! Although I'm starting to think the parents might not have the strongest gene although the mom has a few teeny black splotches.
