The Amazing Aquarium Thread- Why is Fishy Sleeping Upside Down?

Finally got everything in my tank under control and one of my cory's has gone and gotten Ich.
At least im learning alot, having to medicate the whole tank with the only store bought chemical I could get my hands on which looks like its nuked my nitrogen cycle, I was planning on getting a small tank and filter set up to quarantine new fish but its a bit late for that now

Found this thingy, gunna link to the OP. Seems like it has some good info. Saltwaterers wanna chime in?
Following up on my ich problem, almost completely gone but I'd like to note, alot of places i read from said that with store chemicals you wont need to raise your temperature.
Well after 7 days at 24c using medication absolutely nothing changed in my tank. My poor little bronze kept getting them back on him whenever they reproduced.
On saturday i raised the temp to 25 and sunday to 26.
today (monday) there is almost no ich left on him and hes less lethargic than before.
It makes sense due to how ich works that raising the temp would help so i really don't understand why anyone would tell you not to, especially if you use half strength due to certain fish
The only reason I wouldn't use meds and raise the temp at the same time is due to the oxygen in the water. If I remember right certain meds either cause the fish to breathe harder or actually deplete it somehow and the added stress and even less oxygen from the high temps can kill them.
If you run enough air stones or blow a fan over the top to swoosh the water they will probably be ok though.
Also as an update my sun cat ate the rest of my female guppies. At least I have 2 left in a small 3 gallon tank but they are fry being grown out. But TBH that bloodline was crap, a bunch got that spine thing from genetics goin' on. I think I will get some with better genes this time around or switch to platies or swordtails. :why:

Not sure if you've stumbled upon this yet, but here's an archive of one of the most comprehensive write-ups on Ich out there.

Ive actually got a spray bar and about a 5cm drop from the main outlet that causes quite alot of movement in the tanks water so oxygen really shouldn't be an issue at half strength. Im definitely going to lower the temp back down once this is conpletely over though.
On the note of your guppies, how often were you getting genetic issues with them? Ive been planning on adding either guppies or mollies to my tank but im still on the fence about which.

Also that article is fantastic, i had to read a bunch of other articles to get most of the information i needed and here it is all in one. Wish is known about that sooner!
Yeah, that blog was fantastic. Most of the pages have been archived and are worth a read.
About to move to a different state soon and am not looking forward to tearing everything. At least I'll get a chance to rescape, and I've picked up a Fluval spec V for my new office, so that will be something to look forward to.
After ~5 months of feeding live daphnia I can't recommend them highly enough. Right now I've got two five gallon tanks with sponge filters going teeming with more daphnia than I could ever use. I reconstitute yeast in a shot glass and feed both tanks daily now. I use enough to make the tanks just barely cloudy, and the swarms clear up the dissolved yeast after a couple hours.
The hardest part was figuring out how to collect the smaller daphnia for my ember tetras. I looked into brine shrimp nets and pantyhose rigs, but the best solution for me ended up being one of those reusable coffee filters. I suck up what I want with a turkey baster, squirt it through the coffee filter, and then unleash the swarms in my tank for everyone to chase down.
I've also been throwing my plant clippings into the daphnia tanks. I've now got a steady secondary supply of ramshorn snails and am tempted to set up a puffer tank. Other micro-fauna has taken hold in the tank as well. I've got small colonies of detritus worms and planaria, and am letting a damselfy larvae grow out in one of the tanks.

I've never had as many genetic issues as with that last batch I bought off a guy from craigslist. They all started off as fine but as soon as a few fry were born some of the younger females started getting the spine thing and some of the males were already like that. Same thing happened with a few I got from petco on that run as well. They must have been super inbred. To be fair I only paid like 10 bucks for about 30 of them and the main purpose was to be feeders to breed anyway. It was funny though, some of the males I got from the lfs out of the feeder tank for 25 cents a pop did much better than I expected, I think they had some endler in them too. They outlasted most of the others. I think I will try to breed a smaller strain like those. The lfs ones were about half the size of your typical fancy guppy, even the females but they seemed full grown. Maybe they were some breeder's culls that did well? :what:
I did have a lot of success with the prior bloodline which I bred off just a few of them I got at the local petsmart. They had a pretty good run and only one had a deformed spine (which I think was from a birth injury, the mama dropped about 50 fry and died) but he lived for around a year in my uncle's tank with the other males from that batch and did great even with a kink in his spine. His name was squishy.
Unfortunately with the rest of the females I had to feed them all to my cichlids. I didn't have the money to restart the tank they were in for a few months when I was moving out, and my dad forgot some tank stuff so they were getting neglected. In hindsight I should have given my uncle a bunch of females to keep that line going. I was worried they would overrun his 20. They were like half black red males and blue moscow females mixed with something else.
I never had any genetic issues with any mollies when I was breeding them but they were a bit more sensitive and they dropped fry way less often. Now that I think about it either the females I have now haven't dropped, the male I have is sterile, or any fry that were born are just getting munched. Probably the last 2. Maybe some parameter is just off in there too, that 29 has only been up for maybe 6 months.
Well this was unexpected, my female peppered layed a ton of eggs while I was out, they are flat out on everything, first eggs from any fish :cat:
Problem right now is the tank they are in is currently being medicated so im going to have to move them into my small 10L which is unfortunately not cycled (I at least have a bit of product I can use to hopefully keep it ammonia free for as long as they need)

checks out; good resources and tips. looks like these guys own a retail store too which can add to their expertise.

Still don't know if my little Cthulhu is a male or female, but since bristles are starting to come in I should know soon.
Hoping for a male because I want a true Cthulhu, not a little mustachioed Cthulhu.
So the plants and rocks I had really weren't cutting it for giving the corys many places to hide, so I got them a fake hollowed out log and stuck it between the two areas of the tank (One side is planted the other is flat open sand with some rocks)
They spent like 3 days being super cautious about it and making an effort to swim above and around it when going across the tank.
I wonder how they are going to react when I put the guppies I've got into their tank.

Yeah, the time a LFS was finally selling java fern, java moss and anacharis and my asshole dickhead tiger barbs at the time devoured all of it within 24 hours

Hi everyone, I got some questions about underwater life (possibly specifically in aquarium).
I never took the time to interest myself in the subject, so I beg your pardon for my ignorance.
I am a dev and I have a project at school which is an aquarium simulator basically (but I think I just have to create a "water block with life inside") I must implement several species, animals and plants.
I would like to know what can be the effects of the water quality on the population/individuals ?
Do water vegetables breed the same way "ground" vegetables do ?

I can't think of any vegetables that grow in water but if you mean vegetation, for the most part yes.
As for water quality, every little parameter can seriously fuck up the ecosystem if it gets to low or too high.

Thanks, yes I was talking about vegetation sorry.
I'll search for more detailed information about water quality direct effects.
I was thinking that an adjusted super slow game of life could simulate vegetation expansion.
About fishes, apart breeding, guarding eggs, eating and (I suppose) resting, do they have any another activity ?
It depends on the fish, fish like the Dwarf Gourami in that last picture just swim around minding their own business, apparently nipping at any food that managed to fall on stuff, not really doing much, if you walk up to the glass he'll raise his feelers to you to find out what you are.
Fish like the cory cat in the first picture are always swimming around either the bottom or the sides of the tank eating whatever the fuck they find, they love to move their barbels through the sand, and they spit the sand they eat out their gills.
None of my fish have laid any eggs, so I don't know about that, but when I had a Molly give birth she didn't even care about her fry, but again, depends on the fish.

When you say vegetables do you mean plants in general? Aquatic plants utilize a number of different modes of reproduction. Terrestrial plants are incredibly diverse, and their habits are mirrored by their aquatic relatives.
Many species exhibit two or more modes simultaneously. Lemna sp., a floating species, for instance can reproduce via budding or flowering. Some species like ferns or mosses reproduce by growing new plants on their bodies, which then float off to form new growth. Some extend stems above the water column to flower in open air. Some extend a modified stem called a rhizome horizontally to create new plants (genetically identical).
So I want to confirm with you lads, this does look like Ich to you guys?

The white spots were much larger before so im unsure if this is a secondary infection, at any rate this is the third week in to the treatment and its been going well up untill today, suddenly covered in it again :c
Looks like ich to me.

Some fish shoal, as in group together and form a school for protection. Small, shoaling fish are my favorite because their small size makes the tank look much larger. They're also a lot of fun to watch for some reason
So decided to swap the sick cory and the guppies, going to keep trwating the main tank another week but this way i can keep treating him without killing my plants and bacteria.
Odd thing happened with the guppies though, in the small tank they wwould do nothing but swim at the glass whenever i went near them but now that they are in the main tank they do what the cories do and spook anytime i so much as move near the tank.
I fucking hate Guppies, out of all the livebearers they just can not survive for me, two gone in two days with one left all alone.
Barbs, gourami, corys, loaches, "sharks", plecos, all of them last forever, but FUCKING GUPPIES have to be difficult.

Wait, so you took sick fish from a contaminated tank and transported them to a new tank, and then took healthy fish and put them into a contaminated tank?
Wait, so you took sick fish from a contaminated tank and transported them to a new tank, and then took healthy fish and put them into a contaminated tank?
Sounds stupid I know but there is rationale behind it, main tank has been full of meds 24/7 for over 3 weeks and that fish was the only one to show signs of being infected during that and before I started treatment. Healthier fish are going to be more resilient to the infection and to the medication compared to a half dead one so if he isn't there to be constantly infected the ich won't be able to just reinfect the same fish over and over to avoid the medication.
Guess we'll see if im right or not over the coming weeks
Anyone think a dwarf puffer would do fine with corys, a red tailed shark, gourami, gold barbs, yoyo loaches, bristlenose pleco, and platys? Or would it be too aggressive for the more passive ones?

I've never had problems with guppies. Quite the opposite really. You give me two guppies, I'll give you two hundred in a year. Those fuckers breed like crazy. When I was younger we had a tank that had guppies and our first birth was like this special moment and we got the little breeder thing for the mother so no one ate the babies and we were sad when the runt didn't make it, etc. Few years down the line those things were just breeding on autopilot and we were hoping most the little shits got ate.
[editline]1st August 2017[/editline]
Same with mollies.
[editline]1st August 2017[/editline]
We only started with a few of them... they must've been inbreeding like crazy down the line. They just had so many babies... they started developing scoliosis... I had to buy a bottle of clove oil... I didn't want to do it, it was my first time euthanizing fish, but it helps if you think about it as a favor. There were just so many of them... and none of them were commercially attractive, I couldn't sell them back to the store...
So many genetic disabilities, so many dead guppies...
Please forgive my sins, guppy gods. I didn't intend to become a hobby eugenicist.
:why:
[editline]1st August 2017[/editline]
So yeah I don't buy guppies anymore.
Maybe the ones I got just had shit genes then, who knows.
(half from petsmart/petco because of an impulsive mother and half from LFS)
The one guppy that survived is huge though, maybe he'll live.
