After a bevy of emails and phone calls, the formalities have been wrapped up, and at long last everyone can exhale and properly share the word with an excited Internet. Yes, J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, the first of a new series of Star Wars films to come from Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy. Abrams will be directing and Academy Award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay.
"It's very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie," said Kennedy. "J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture."
George Lucas went on to say "I've consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller." He's an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands."
"To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor," J.J. Abrams said. "I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid."
J.J., his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are on board to produce along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney | Lucasfilm banner."
Also consulting on the project are Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg. Kasdan has a long history with Lucasfilm, as screenwriter on The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Return of the Jedi. Kinberg was writer on Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Abrams and his production company Bad Robot have a proven track record of blockbuster movies that feature complex action, heartfelt drama, iconic heroes and fantastic production values with such credits as Star Trek, Super 8, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, and this year's Star Trek Into Darkness. Abrams has worked with Lucasfilm's preeminent postproduction facilities, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, on all of the feature films he has directed, beginning with Mission: Impossible III. He also created or co-created such acclaimed television series as Felicity, Alias, Lost and Fringe.

I guess we can take the discussion from the sensationalist headlines thread to here so I am reposting this
I have been thinking about this and I feel that there are many things JJ could screw up. I am not saying I am some kind of expert in movies but sometimes I just wish I could just talk to him and give him notes and reminders of what would make a star-wars film so true to the original feeling while maintaining at least some modernity to it.
For instance I want it to be somewhat grounded into realism, have plausible scenery and real film locations. Don't make it into some kind of fast paced action thriller like Star Trek, give it some pace and adventure and make sure we really do care about your characters. Don't do that whole fast moving follow camera that you tend to do in your movies, it doesn't fit Star Wars IMO. Keep the cinematography somewhat a classic style without too many crazy movements, I don't care if it doesn't look up to "modern standards".
Also for the love of god don't go overboard with CG-I, I really do think this is a big glaring issue, CG-I has left a bad taste in my mouth recently and the original star wars trilogy is the highest prime example of practical effects with amazing results. I mean this is probably stretching it but it would be amazing if they pulled off a mostly practical effects movie with cg-i touches to make it look more realistic. I mean god if JJ had the balls and effort to do something like that I would be so fucking happy.
Star Trek wasn't the only thing this guy made, go watch Super 8 or the first two seasons of LOST. He knows how to make good characters that we actually care about and he does it pretty damn well too. I have trust in JJ and he'll probably give us a dose of good Star Wars we've all been craving for so long.
I think everything will be fine.
Star Wars VII
To film in Kent..
Lots is filmed there, it's a good location.
I think JJ is a fine choice, and I think he'll do Star Wars better then Star Trek, hes admitted he likes Star Wars a lot more that Star Trek
tbh I'm optimistic about the new movie, can't fuck it up more than George Lucas did
I hope Abrams continues his trend of fantastic casting. Or just brings along some people from Lost and Fringe.
Actually just John Noble.

To be honest, I didn't mind the lens flares all that much.
To be honest, they were stupidly strong in his Star Trek, but he listened and toned it down in his other work.
JJ on meeting Kathleen Kennedy;
"I learned firsthand how incredible and persuasive she is. The thing about any pre-existing franchise -- I'd sort of done that. But when I met with Kathy, it was suddenly very tantalizing."
Kathleen on her meetings with JJ. They and the writers met secretly for about three hours on December 19th;
"J.J. was just on the ceiling when I walked out the door. He was concerned about his obligations elsewhere and the impact on his wife and three kids, given the likelihood that the film would not be shot in Los Angeles. And then there was the unique nature of the franchise. If there was any pause on J.J.'s part, it was the same pause everybody has -- including myself -- stepping into this. Which is, it's daunting. We spent a lot of time talking about how meaningful Star Wars is and the depth of the mythology that George has created and how we carry that into the next chapter. "
On JJ's doubtful committment to the previously announced 2015 release date for the movie;
"Our goal is to move as quickly as we can, and we'll see what happens. The timetable we care about is getting the story."
the depth of the mythology that George has created
Most of the depth to Star Wars came from the EU I thought.
Say what you will about Lucas' scripting and directing but he created an incredible universe without it feeling threatening or imposing at any point. The story of Anakin and Luke is an excellent story of redemption and around it you got all this mythology and background for nearly every character, race, planet you meet.
Disappointed. It appears Disney and Lucasfilm are so crazy on SW Episode 7, they postponed the 3D re-releases
I was expecting Episode 2 and 3 to be better cause they were filmed digital = not so gimmicky 3d conversion
Now I gotta wait another 4 years for them to come out
Also they are not cancelled, they are only delayed.
why is that even an issue? i'd much rather have entirely new movies than watch those again
Ah fuck, they're not going to release the 3D versions of those average movies I liked and are instead focusing on well-made sequels to those amazing movies I loved.
I'm honestly ecstatic. JJ Abrams is a long time fan of Star Wars, and he has the backing of several other writers/directors who have done great work.
I think its a great choice! I cant wait! I went to the midnight showing of Episode 3 and my god it was crazy. Everybody was dressed up and lightsabers everywhere.

This is pretty ridiculous. You should all watch it.
A new rumour is going about saying how a potential spin-off film could be about Yoda
A new rumour is going about saying how a potential spin-off film could be about Yoda
has his relationship with the wookiees been explained anywhere before?
A new rumour is going about saying how a potential spin-off film could be about Yoda
Doubt it, Lucas always stated that any spinoff shit cannot be about Yoda, unless it doesn't touch on his origins.
i just watched the phantom menace again last night.
really not as bad as everyone says, but definitely not as good as the originals. tonight i shall watch episode 2!
I'm not gonna lie, a movie about Yoda seems really uninteresting to me. Part of what made Yoda cool was the fact that he was a rather mysterious and immensely powerful character. I think his backstory would be way to disappointing to most audiences as well.

He says a lot of things (Like there wouldn't be an Episode VII)
However, they're making this sound like it'll be a spin-off film that's not Episode VII, which would make sense, but I still think it's a bad idea.
They've now confirmed there will be "Standalone character" http://uk.ign.com/articles/2013/02/05/disney-ceo-bob-iger-confirms-star-wars-standalone-movies
Expect Yoda and Jabba as those were the two rumoured.
Part of me is "OH SHIT YES MORE STAR WARS YAAAAY". Another part is "OH SHIT. It's really ruining the novelty of new movies if we can expect a movie every year"

Can I just point out he said both things while he actually owned them. What Lucas said honestly doesn't matter for shit anymore. The moment he sold it they started working on the films he said he wouldn't make. He's probably advising them because he still wants to feel somewhat in control of his creation.
Imagine being George sitting down to watch Star Wars Episode 7 when it come out. That'll feel really freaking weird for him.
I wouldn't mind a Boba Fett standalone, same with a Jedi-style Seven Samurai.
Jabba the Hutt would just be ungodly. Would anybody shell out money for a 2+ hour film about a giant slug turning into a crime lord?
