My dad was called to the towers that day (he's NYPD; an officer). He was riding in a police car with another rookie and as soon as my dad saw the wreckage, he basically said "well fuck that". The rookie, however, wanted to go in. My dad told him that he would die and that they're going back to the prescient. A few years later, the same rookie came up to my dad and thanked him, saying that my dad had saved his life, and shook his hand.
I've watched all the videos posted here and for the past 10 years I've been doing every bit of research on the 9/11 attacks. I've seen most of everything, but surprisingly enough, in this thread alone I've seen plenty of things that I've missed. The one thing that I watched from beginning to end is the 102 minutes and even though some of the footage was super familiar, some of it was brand new to me. Such as the reels from the slight dusty aftermath after the first tower fell. Dare I say, learning more and seeing more about the attacks makes my respect for those who tried their hardest to fight the fires, and the police who tried to evacuate everyone and make people safer, just skyrockets. And by the way, the Flight 93 series that was posted earlier, does anyone know what happened to Part 7? It wasn't on youtube, and that's the only reason I stopped watching it. It skipped a whole chunk. :\ Also, is it possible to keep most of the conspiracy theories out of this thread, please?
the "but so many more died in X or Y disaster and bombing or whatever" argument is pretty dumb. "oh, did they? crap I'll just go honor the holocaust some more instead of these people, they had it off so easily"
A lot of the people here object to the fact that it's in the media so often. I'm in Australia and we've had a 9/11 story every day for the last week or so, with around ten articles in the major newspaper of my city today. I think it's valid to ask why there isn't a yearly media event around The Holocaust, Rwanda's 100 Days of Madness, etc. Of course this is a monumentally significant event for a lot of people, but people tire of it. And why can't people make jokes about it? Sensationalist Headlines has a culture devoted to bad taste jokes that involve trivialising sad events, why is it not allowed here? [editline]11th September 2011[/editline]
Do other countries care about 9/11? Like UK, Australia as a whole, etc.
Of course, people in every country care about disasters of this nature. It's a tragedy. Perhaps it's not worth having an entire week's news devoted to it though. In Australia even major newspapers were running dozens of stories about it today.

I just finished watching the 102 minute video, I suggest people watch that, it is really interesting.
I salute everyone who risked their lives for the benefit of others.
Also, is it possible to keep most of the conspiracy theories out of this thread, please?
Only happened once and we were able to convince him it wasn't a Shadow Government FEMA Plot to put the Ghetto in Prison Camps and invade the Middle East because Bush is the Anti-Christ.
Well today is the day. Now starts the facebook posts remember the lives lost and the heroes made. Today is a strange day. A day of remembrance. A day of sadness and of pride. I hope they never turn this into a "national holiday" where we get breaks from school and work. Thats exactly what the terrorists would want is to not make progress. The least we can do for those victims is try our hardest at everything we do today.
I was about 8 when it happened, I didn't pay to much attention to it and I ended up getting my parents called in because me and my friend started drawing pictures of poeple jumping out the towers with smiley faces. I feel really fucking bad for that, but back then I had no idea.
ah, the innocence of childhood. This is an event when I wish I was older to fully grasp the situation. I don't remember thinking about it much when I was in 2nd grade.
Do other countries care about 9/11? Like UK, Australia as a whole, etc.
They do. In German television, its everywhere. After all, It might have happened in the USA, but its still a crime against humans, just like everyone is.

There are 9/11 jokes being made, just not around that time of the year...
I think it's so prevalent right now for two reasons: happened recently, was an atrocity in modern times that which most modern societies can very well face if things go wrong, and the fact that shark week exists and sharks kill literally less people than hippos or hookers on a yearly basis
Still no Rwandan genocide week. Oh wait nevermind they're different and mostly died because the western world didn't intervene.
I remember being 5 and thinking it was a product of the media or some shit Then I started randomly crying about it even though I didn't know why I was crying other than the fact that they fell.
It's still terrifying to know that Popular Mechanics fucking called it on what the attack would look like (the actual article was about Air Traffic Controller error)....20 years before it even happened. My thoughts go out to every family and person affected by 9/11. Rest in peace to those who passed away.
Name some, just as an example?
London bus attack Madrid train bombings Chernobyl Norwegian car bomb and island slaughtering Hiroshima And alot more. Not to be an ass, but the world is bigger than just USA. R.I.P to the people that died. They didn't deserve this kind of death.
No words can describe how I feel right now.
Do other countries care about 9/11? Like UK, Australia as a whole, etc.
We do care, we just think YOU care way too much.
Posted again just like last year.
What. The end to that video is the first thing to leave me completely speechless in recent memory.
Do other countries care about 9/11? Like UK, Australia as a whole, etc.
We had a minute silence in 2002 and every year there's a couple of documentries on
Do other countries care about 9/11? Like UK, Australia as a whole, etc.
We don't but the media thinks we do because you still do. Hell, we don't even remember our OWN terrorist attacks (7/7)
I care about what happened, but not as much as you Americans care. I think about it every year (heck, it's inevitable) but that's about it. The thing that really ticks me off is that 9/11 has been in the media for the past week every goddamn day. Documentary after documentary, 3 page long articles in newspapers, news on the radio, interviews, etc... Come on, I KNOW what happened that day. It seems to be getting worse every year. Please don't get me wrong here. I'm not trying to be disrespectful against the many victims. It's just that the media needs to stop milking 9/11. They're using 9/11 to make tonnes of money. That hasn't got anything to do with respect.
Has anyone seen the movie Flight 93? It gets so emotional toward the end, should be required viewing
The first footage I saw of 9/11 was the video of the man holding a camera backwards running away from the dust following the collapse of the south tower. I was six at the time and didn't fully understand what was going on, however on the next day at school everyone was pretty sad, especially the teachers and it was rather quiet too. Even 10 years later it still seems hard to believe it happened for an unknown reason.
Now this is a sad day. I remember when the towers fell, and I was in third grade I think. The point is, it felt like a regular day, and looking back at it now, I feel stupid for not acknowledging something like this. Also, is anyone else watching the FOX 9/11 Coverage right now?
3000 kills yeah it's sad what's sadder is what was triggered afterwards, the patriot act and the war on iraq, the death toll over there ? 700.000 civilians. The means don't justify the end america How about the firefighters the first response people? those are the true heroes, and what do they get? cronic lung diseases, and your shitty government doesn't even give a shit. So yeah i might seem bitter with this post, but i like to see the big picture and it's a wall of shit.
