Massachusetts here.
I'd be pretty excited if there was something like this going on in the NE.
Americans are you willing to come to southern BC?
i simply can't :( im in one of the most south-east states :'(
Let's go to Prince George we can get shot, frostbite, and bad lungs all in one trip!
Mystic beach on the Juan De Fuca trail is also an option.
Ooh, Juan de Fuca trail is fantastic. I camped at Sombrio and it was just delightful. Wet and rainy but right by the beach, fantastic view, and lots of starting fires using Nafta Bombs
[sp]A nafta bomb is a Tim Hortons Soup Cup filled with paper towel, soaked in nafta, and then lit like a molotov and placed on the firewood.[/sp]
I could go to BC, take a train there, but I need more money.
Tennessee has some beautiful places and mountains
New York City, we could party in the city, and chill at my beach after
[editline]7th January 2012[/editline]
yes, I own a beach. its half a mile long
Los Angeles/San Fernando Valley here. California should be the place to hold it.
I live in northern California and would be willing to go almost anywhere on the west coast. Won't be 18 til August though.
Oh what the fuck come on! aren't you all "AMURRIKA FUCK YEAH If brits can do it WE CAN DO IT BEST!!1"
Oh what the fuck come on! aren't you all "AMURRIKA FUCK YEAH If brits can do it WE CAN DO IT BEST!!1"
Oh. We'll do it better. But in case you didnt notice, the US is MASSIVE
Oh. We'll do it better. But in case you didnt notice, the US is MASSIVE
You got like 18 people north-west, hell I'd be making a thread with planning if I lived there.
[editline]8th January 2012[/editline]
or you know, ask a little advice to the brits on the planning and stuff since they have some experience.
I'm in North Texas. Do it near there. Except everywhere outside is shitty near me and it would suck. Balance the distance/awesome factors.
I live in minnesota. It's in the center of the US so it's pretty equidistant from everything else.
Also northern minnesota is really nice, like the lake superior coast area, the BWCA.
Also Black Hills SD area.
I know their is alot of people in the North-West so i'd say BC, because the drinking age is 19 so thats good and what not, I had a campsite in mind actually, Porteau Cove. It's a oceanside campground about a 30 minute drive North of Vancouver. http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/porteau/
Lake Garibaldi is another choice for camping In BC.
It's a bit of a hike to get up to, but It's well worth it, and there's loads of day hikes around it.

BC sounds badass. Any possible dates?
What seems to be the predominant part of the meetup in the North-West is location.
Canadians, how much do your passports cost?
Because in the United States they cost at the very least $135 and up to $165+
From what I can tell a Canadian passport costs around 92 canadian dollars, or about 89ish American dollars. If one of you guys can give me a more accurate figure that would be great.
Thing is I don't think it would be fair to host the meetup in Canada when the cost of our passport is so much greater. I really doubt that many people on FP from the US have passports. While generally it seems people from other countries [sp]Canada[/sp] tend to have a higher ratio of passports to people.
Just throwing my 2 cents in

what do you mean by passports? like regular traveling passports? You don't have a passport already? Jesus christ! Who doesn't have a passport at the age of 18+?
(My country issues them free :D)
In USA passports are hardly necessary. There's nowhere to go besides Mexico/Canada without hopping the ocean, which is quite costly. Only reason you'd need one is to travel outside the vast lands of USA, which most people don't care to do since it's a pretty fucking big investment of time and money.
Quite different from bordering countries such as throughout Europe.

I'd buy a passport for a big trip like this, fuck it. I'd be traveling from south USA anyways, it would already be a big ass trip. How long are they valid before you need renewal? Or how does that shit work?
People who don't travel internationally, that's who.
Farthest north I've ever been is Chicago. Farthest south is Miami.
Sure I want to travel internationally. I'd love to visit Canada and Europe and Asia. But I can't afford it.
So why waste money on an identification card I'll never use that will expire?

Better get it now. Passports take 4-6 weeks to issue.
Which, really, seems retarded.
I elect CT.
This won't work as a camp/meetup simply because the US/CAN is too big, while generally you can hop on a train and be anywhere in the UK within a day.
Sure we have the interstate highway system but it's still 37 hour drive (almost $300+ in gas alone) straight plus breaks to get from Ohio to Nevada, and that's not even the whole stretch of the US.
I think a much better idea would be a road trip, good ol' US is famous for those. We could pick people up and caravan along the way, the only one that would get the short end of the stick would be those who start the trip on one far side or the other. Also i'd be a shit tonne of time being in a car.
Camping is an obvious option of where to stay, and if people have large cars you can simply sleep in them. If there's no camping, there are literally thousands of Hostel's around the entire country that you can sleep in for about $15-$20 a night at most, which are pretty awesome depending on where you go and if you go to the right ones. I stayed at the grand canyon international hostel (which has people from all over the world stay at) for a night this past winter in Flagstaff, it was pretty cool.
Either way the reason why Camp Facpunch in the UK works so well is because it's pretty cheap to get to and requires little in the way of commitment, unless you consider a several hour train ride too much commitment. That's not gonna be possible at all with this, unless all 20 of you folks hanging around in BC and washington meetup.

Americans don't have to have a passport book to get in. You can get a Nexus Pass which is essentially the extreme version of a passport. It's $50 for 5 years. They do a criminal background check, do a retina/fingerprint scan, and interview you with both Canadian/American border guards. The pass however gets you into a special line-up for people with the Nexus Pass for speedified border travel.
Those in Washington can get an Enhanced Driver's License, which also counts as valid border ID.
You can also get a passport card which is not valid for air travel but is valid for land/sea travel and it only costs $55.
Canadian Passports do indeed cost $92. However, more people live in BC than both Washington, Oregon, and California combined. Also, why don't you guys want to travel to Canada? It's a fantastic experience, I've been to the States, it's not really unique but Canada is quite different. Definitely less urban than the States I find.
Portland, OR?
I thought you could cross US/Canada border without a passport...
come to Chicago
I don't have a mountain, but I DO have a pond behind my house we can get yelled at for fishing in
You need a Passport or some Federally Approved document.
In Michigan we can get an 'Enhanced' Drivers license for $45 and it lets us travel without a passport in between the US and Canada and Mexico.
Also, again.. Michigan, U.P you've never camped if you haven't been to the U.P.
I had to get a passport for something when I was 8. Do they expire? I would assume they at least want a more current picture of me for their file.
