Man, I think I've poured more effort into writing this fan fiction than anything I've written in the last year or two. It's like day five. I'm putting serious effort into it because I want it to be good, but sheesh. I figured it would be easy to write for pre-established characters, but I have to stop and think because I can't just do what I want with them. On my first draft of my prologue, Rainbow Dash begrudgingly submits to doing something she didn't want to do. That's fine and dandy for moving the story forward, but that's not something that Rainbow Dash would do. She's a sarcastic, blunt, and argumentative character. She'd fight it a lot more, at least, so I'm finding myself balancing story progression against the characters I'm dealing with.
Fan fiction is fun and all, until you actually try to write a serious one.
Fan fiction is fun and all, until you actually try to write a serious one.
Well I don't mean to imply that I'm not having fun! The truth is I've been on a dry streak with nothing to write about for a long time, and I definitely love a challenge. Characterization has always been my weak point because I would end up doing things lazily and my characters were always relatively drab and boring. Now that I actively have to think, "Hey, how would this character react to this situation," rather than just shoehorning in a response to move my story forward, my writing's becoming a lot more interesting. I think this might actually might be really good for my writing skills overall.
Are you my twin personality?
No, characterization is just hard.
No, characterization is just hard.
No, i mean i have near-identical problems. i hate doing characters outside of my head and i don't write enough stuff to describe events taking place.
hey guys this is my frist shipping fanfic pls be nice! its about your favourit posters! Me, me and me! Actually CheeseMan and I Broke The Sun! is in it too! so take your time and read it through! Wacky Moments of Nations (hehe get it because we're from different countries!) - ::EPISODE ONE:: ~kitchen trouble~ "You're up early" said cheseman just as he entered the kitchen where ibts was currently. "Yeah i'm not a lazy fuck like you" ibts told him back. "die" cheeseman countered with. *stock laughter* Juts then luafoxxy entered the room and he said warmly "Good morning guys!". IBTS and Chesseman simontaneously said to him "hi" and then continued with their bickering. Luadfox sighed and started prepairing breakfast. He noticed there was no milk, he said "we're out of milk ibts and cheeseman" and they answered "go buy some". Luafoxxy said "no" and then he decided to continue making breakfast even though there was no milk. he reached for a knife to cut the apple he had so he could share it! but he droped the knife and cut his finger to which he proclaimed "ow!". He held up his finger and made a dramatic pose and blood trickled down it. He cried. "I cut my finger and it hurts and made an owwie!" he said with frighten! "don't worry we have bandaids!!" cheeseman said and took out a carton of bandaids from the cabinet. He cleaned the wound gently and put on a bandaid and then kissed the finger. "All better now?" he aksed Luanfox while wiping the tears of his cheek. Luafox answered "yes thanks..." and blushed. Three slow, loud claps could be heard from IBTS side of the table. They turned around and saw him with his sarcastic smile. "good work you saved the day......." he said with the most sarcastic tone you can imagine. "it's so cute i could die" he added. "Do you also want a kiss?" Luafoxx asked softly. "yyes"ibts said back with a hint of sandness in his tone and looked down sadly. CheeseMan and Luafox lined up on each side of IBTS and nodded to each other. ibts looked back and forth, confused. But before he could say anything, both Luafox and CheeseMan planted a kiss on each of his cheeks. ibts blushed and said "i love u guys....". They were just quiet and smiled, before laying their heads on his shoulders and wrapping their arms aorund him.
No, i mean i have near-identical problems. i hate doing characters outside of my head and i don't write enough stuff to describe events taking place.
Well, I like writing for these established characters just as much as I do for my own characters. And my problem isn't that I don't write enough, it's just that I tend to only create characters that are convenient for me to work with. I can write a character with flaws and with a personality, but they always seem form-fitted to the situation when I write. The biggest problem I have is basically in making a character say "No! You know what, this is bullshit, we're doing it this way instead!" Instead my characters either a) willfully go along with the progression of steps they have to blunder through to resolve their problems or b) have flaws that never get in the way and instead may even help the story to progress. This caused me two problems: My stories were over WAY too quick and my characters were goddamn BORING.
to be honest the answer is blindingly obvious: instead of doing my little pony fanfics try your hand at writing something with more freedom. insane, but it'll be much more rewarding.
I love writing, but whenever I have the freedom to do what I want with a story, I end up making it way too long and convoluted. It usually just ends up sucking and I never finish it. :smith:
to be honest the answer is blindingly obvious: instead of doing my little pony fanfics try your hand at writing something with more freedom. insane, but it'll be much more rewarding.
Oh, I've done so. I actually came in third for a statewide short-story contest when I was in high school. I was originally going to be an author, but changed my mind in my senior year.
Fan fiction is fun and all, until you actually try to write a serious one.
That is the fun of writing: To be able to write a professional and serious work about anything and everything. I asked a friend to give me a random topic to write a short story about one day, and it was basically How to Train Your Dragon meets Godzilla. It was pretty entertaining.

Yeah, but ultimately writing a real piece and doing fan fiction is massively different, contrary to what you think. To use an allegory - Writing from scratch is like, say, building a house from scratch. You choose the decor, the theme, the feel, and ultimately it's yours, unique. Writing a fanfiction is leasing somebody else's house and living in it. The house isn't yours and you know it - you're leeching off its established feel, theme, look and (to deviate from the fairly restrictive allegory about houses) even dictates what your writing style is like to an extent. It's for the most part detrimental to your writing skills if you're actually good at writing, because you'll slowly lose that creative spark that makes a writer and in its replacement a person content with just shoehorning his concepts, ideas into an easily facilitated environment. And I know my shit, a few years ago I did a lot of fanfiction shit (Mine ended up 50,000 words long. It was well written, but I hate it because it's a fanfiction. That said, there's one piece I made at the end of it that I'm very proud of, but aside from that the whole thing is something I'd prefer to forget and not make the same mistake again) [editline]o[/editline] oh for fjuck sake
Yeah, its more difficult because it requires you to build on what someone else wrote, but its not as strict as you think. There are quite a few fanfics that are seen as good shit, despite having outlandish personalities for already established characters.
Just watched Part 2. The ending :v: I'm excited! Are you excited? I'm excited! I've never been so excited except the time I went GAAAASP
