I took a break for a while once I got into college because I had no time to put any serious effort into my stories. This is the first fan fiction I've ever written, and while it's easier in some respects than original writing it's more difficult in others. I think that the endeavor will help my writing because I'm focusing more on the characters than I ever have.

While changing personalities can be done successfully, when people search for fanfiction, they already have an idea in mind of the personalities of the characters involved. A lot of people can replicate this fairly well, but there are also many who find it difficult to determine what would be "right" for a character to say/do. In a brand new writing, you only have to have consistency from beginning to end. For fanfiction, you have to use the personality already established. For the most part anyway.

For the most part anyway.[/QUOTE] Tbh it's extremely easy to write an established character, especially when you've seen something like 24 episodes of them talking. If you can't replicate something like that when you've seen that much material, you probably don't have what it takes to be a writer really. I was more talking about doing a fanfic inside MLP but not using the main characters, just the world.

Also writing again is a welcome reprieve from writing music, which is a hobby I took up in the meantime. It was [i]awesome[/i] until I ran out of ideas. Since then I've kind of lacked any creative outlets.
