Accutane - Cures acne, can cause horrible death. Worth it?

There are serious reactions possible for many common medicines. Just don't put all your eggs etc. Good luck Pizza Face. (I have never suffered with ACNE so I'm sorry if that came off really harshly, it was only a jest)
Christ man you should NOT use it. Just cope with your acne for a few years, getting rid of a bunch of spots to get a good look isn't worth your pancreas, heart or other vital organs failing.
They should ban this shit if it's so terribly dangerous to use.
Also how in the name of Christ will a drug that gets rid of your acne decrease the amount of white blood cells like that? The only thing I know of that does this is some kind of form of Leukemia which is quite literally caused by cancer in the organs that produce white blood cells.

Or maybe it's not really that dangerous at all and that's why it's been around for 20 years, and genetic acne doesn't just go away after a few years.
Alright, genetic acne doesn't go away after a few years. But I wouldn't trade looks for organ functionality, would you?
True, these are side effects and they're not guaranteed. However side effects occur more often than you would think. Just imagine being a poor son of a gun and get it. I'm sorry but I wouldn't want a fragile skin, nor decreased vision and so on and so forth. I'd rather cope with having acne than needing to cope with severe nosebleeds.
I know acne is quite a problem for some folks because it fucks your self esteem, but I'd rather not be hospitalized for a drug that will boost your self esteem.

Seconding/thirding the washing your sheets/pillowcases thing. They're huge face-grease-sponges. I started washing my sheets much more frequently and my problem disappeared. I didn't do the towel on the pillowcase but I flip my pillow over once a night, and I rotate between 3 pillows (lets me put off laundry for 6 days).

Those serious side effects mentioned occur less often than you would think (the ones involving the user getting hospitalized or worse).
Acne isn't just looks, cystic acne is incredibly painful and can't be popped, and having your skin constantly enflamed and irritated from acne in general isn't too fun either. And you better stop taking Tylenol, any sort of allergy medicines, Motrin, or any other common medications, because horrible things like throats swelling closed and organ failure are listed on there too, it's for liability.
You are an idiot if you don't take something that could completely cure your condition because you think the FDA has approved a liver-failure pill that's killing people left and right. It's been on the market for years, thousands of people have taken it, there's massive outcry from sudden deaths, and blood tests are run regularly during the course of the treatment to check for any spikes in blood chemistry so they can stop it if anything happens. And Accutane isn't even available any more, just safer generic versions because they provided it so much cheaper than Accutane that they ran it off the market.
My doctor almost put me on accutane, I'm on one level below it.
She said if I were on it, she'd have to take a blood test every month.
Ask your doctor for an antibiotic. I was put on Amoxicillin and it worked absolute wonders.
Another doctor put me on Doxycycline, which was also awesome, but made me mad nauseated.
If I had horrible, debilitating acne; I'd say sure.
I only had it mild-to-medium throughout my schooling though, and I later discovered that drinking unholy amounts of soda (2-5 a day) played a huge impact on it. When I went cold turkey on the stuff, my face cleared up almost entirely.
hmmm, its hard to say that depression is a side effect as people who suffer from depression while taking this drug are probably depressed because of their looks

I've been thinking lately of drinking juice with soda water to stop drinking soda altogether.
Would that help? I don't know if mixing juice with it would make it any better though.
Oh yeah, I've heard of this stuff. It's like the acne medication equivalent of a nuke from orbit.
So many side effects that i personally wouldn't take it, but then again i don't have acne so i don't really know how much it shits on your confidence.
I used it, all I got was fucked up lips and nosebleeds. I'd say it's worth it.
and tbh I didn't want to use it at first but I was pretty confident in myself and pulled through it.
Also, I hope you enjoy taking pills because you have to take them every. fucking. day.
And then eventually they'll make you take 2 pills a day, and based on how well it turns out near the end maybe 3. I didn't take 3 and my acne was pretty bad so don't worry about that.

can't you just stop? never heard of anyone getting addicted to fizzy drinks.
I'm on 20mg and the only side effect I got was for the first three weeks I had dry lips, after that nothing! It works! Seriously.
Looks like you're swallowing a piece of radioactive Uranium-285
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); black, tarry, or bloody stools; blurred vision; fainting; fast heartbeat; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; loss of coordination; mood or mental changes (eg, agitation, depression, irritability); ringing in the ears; seizures; severe or persistent dizziness, drowsiness, or stomach pain; severe or persistent trouble sleeping; shallow or very slow breathing; tremors; unusual bruising or bleeding; vomit that looks like coffee grounds; wheezing.
Guess what these are side effects for?
They sound terrible, oh yea,
it's your everyday aspirin pill.
Side effects are listed for liability issues, I took acutane for six months, never had a problem

I could just stop, I only usually drink one every 2-3 days. I enjoy one every once in a while.
Oh and another thing: during school I got yearbook pictures taken of my face, and when time passed near to the end of the year my face cleared up. Someone bought a yearbook and brought it to me and I wanted to see my picture in it. I actually recoiled at the picture because it looked so bad compared to all the other people around me.
Shit didn't feel good at all.

Having been a fellow acne sufferer for several years now I can sympathise with you. In most cases, from what I've heard, the more extreme side effects are very much uncommon, and you likely won't get them. The mental issues, in particular depression, could probably be mitigated by having a good social life, which will be a natural consequence of having more self esteem from better skin.
I personally think it's a good idea. Acne is just a pain in the neck (literally in my case), and not having to worry about it or the potential scarring afterwards would be well worth any irritation this drug would cause. Just keep an eye out for the side effects, and give the doc a shout.
Best of luck with it, let us know how you get on.
I'd also like to offer this rebuttal for all those of you who are of the opinion that acne is purely cosmetic:
It's damn painful. I have acne on my shoulders. Many days, wearing a bag is somewhat akin to pressing a drawing pin into my skin.
If I have it on my back or shoulders, or sometimes on my ear, I can't sleep in any position because of the screaming pain. Car seatbelts can cause the same problem.
Even the collar of my shirt has given me grief before when my nape's got a spot.
If I have a bad itch and I accidentally scratch a spot, I get to walk around with a blood-stained shirt until I can get home. Shaving is almost unbearable, I try to put it off for weeks at a time. I can't stand anybody seeing me topless, so when I go to the beach, I am fairly uneasy. If I've had a bad day and I catch sight of myself in the mirror I get right pissed off from it.
It's mostly just the little things, but since the little things make up life it's a constant irritation that I could really do without.
I took Acutane for quite a while and didn't die, I would recommend it. I got a whole lot better.
Why hello there everyone! I've been taking accutane for 6 months, and guess what:
THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THAT MY ACNE IS GONE
/c
Ask your doctor man, this shit can work wonders for you.
You don't necessarily have to take the drug, but I don't know how anxiously you want to get rid of acne.
In 3weeks to 3months you can probably get rid of acne by other safer means too in case you haven't tried:
-Eating healthy
-Washing hands and face, and avoid smearing your hands on your face
-Using some hygienic or beauty products that are less toxic along with everything else
PLUS
if those don't work as quickly as you'd wish, you can try eating a lot of Cold-pressed Hemp Seed Oil too (as is or in food), it's more beneficial for your health than olive oil or soy milk, some reviews tell it makes your hair shiny and gets rid of acne too.

These sort of responses are stupid - He wouldn't have been given the option of having these prescribed if it could be cured with just washing more or a diet change, and most likely would have had to try those methods before hand.
I had really severe acne to the point that I had to visit the doctor twice times - first for antibiotics, then benzonyl peroxide. Niether of them managed to even stop the acne - it just kept on getting worse. (For the record, I was outside daily, swimming, shower at least twice a day and so on)
I'd tried all of the over the counter drugs, and the doctor referred me to a dermatologist, who prescribed accutane. (when you get expensive drugs from the NHS immediately, there's something major...)
For the first month I had 20 mg/day. That made an immediate improvement - spots stopped forming after a few days, and the existing spots started to go away. After a month, I was upped to 40 mg/day, which started giving some of the side effects - really cracked lips (nothing vaseline couldn't solve) and slight mood swings. After a month of 40, I was upped to 60mg/day (max safe dosage for my weight) which had... very uncomfortable side effects. My lips were dry no matter how much vaseline was used (E45 was more effective to be honest) and I got severe joint aches. Not sure if it's related, but it affected my appetite too.
Last month I was put off the 60mg/day, and brought down to 40mg/day, to finish the course. (in 15 days or so)
It'll have taken a while, but there shouldn't be any permanent side effects and the improvement was definitely worth the cracked lips, dry skin and joint aches. Only take it for severe acne at a doctors reccomendation though.
Have fun with your Crohn's Disease. Acne is temporary. Holes in your bowels, however, are not.
