We have plenty of shit that's overpriced. I know nearly all musical instruments can be bought online for half the price they offer here.
I don't want to break anyone's parade here, but I am an Australian myself, despite the fact I'm descendant of the Polish, my old folk came here after WW2. The point that the OP makes is that he is an uneducated bastard making a wide-generalisation of an entire country, not everyone in Australia is Indigenous or of Anglo descent. You also call Aboriginals the "true Aussies", not taking into note that their is a second major Indigenous group in Australia: The Torres Strait Islanders.

A long time ago the Native Americans were mostly killed off. The tactics used are horrible by today's standards, and should never happen again. But it did, and we declared ourselves America.
Not big on Australian history, but I'm thinking something similar happened.
In ancient times, countries would conquer one another through violence and armies on a routine basis. If it wasn't countries it was tribes.
Today, most countries don't try to conquer other countries, because interdependency amongst the countries almost assures that everybody has a gun out on the table of diplomacy - screw with one country and everybody else will stop you.
America and Australia are both respectable places. They do have their problems, but the people that now live there are more or less respectable people.
Also, I love the Australian accent. I assume some people like the American one, just as people like British accents, Indian accents, Irish, Chinese, and all the others.
Times have changed, we all have tarnished bloody pasts, but we all have to live with that and move on.

I went to Australia, and what I heard made me <3 all over.
