I've never noticed it before but I think I use 'mate' a fair bit. I usually use it when I'm retelling a story or describing what I'm doing. "Just hangin' at a mate's house" sort of thing.

I'm Australian 100% and I'm not counted as a 'true Aussie' Aboriginals and Fobs make some parts of Australia look really bad(Brisbane, Queensland).
