Your own eyes are an imperfect optical device, so lens flares will occur even if you aren't looking through any extra lens. You just don't notice them as much because they don't produce the retarded shapes that happen when you have an array of 5 lenses and a hexagonal aperture.

Some games go for realism but others go for a cinematic look. The cinematic look essentially is making it look like you're watching a movie, so there would be lens flare, and things like blurring in the distance, and motion blur etc.

I disagree. You shouldn't generalize like that, as each game's case is different. Different games aim for different aesthetics.
